Post-mast testing/scans

Options

Had a bilat mast last month - one breast had DCIS and the other was Stage I. I'm currently seeing an oncologist and waiting for the result of the oncotype test to see what do from here on out. A friend of mine who went through breast cancer 6 years ago told me that her oncologist told her that it was real important to have CT/bone scans done before determining what kind of (if any) treatment to follow. I asked my oncologist about these scans and she said they were not necessary. Now I did some research on the 'net and didn't find much info on this topic. Did anyone here have these scans done after their mastectomies? I'm so confused!

Hi Evie - it IS very confusing! Before my mastectomy, my breast surgeon scheduled me for bone scans, because I had hip pain - he wanted to rule out mets before surgery. I also had an MRI done on both breasts - and thankfully, the only cancer was the one in my right breast. Since you've already had both breasts removed, the pathology report on the tissue would cover you there and unless you're suffering from pain or have other symptoms, the oncologist probably won't order you any scans. Your treatment from here on in will be determined by the results of your Onocotype DX score and the pathology report following your mastectomies.

It's hard when our friends tell us about their experiences - even 6 years is a long time ago in the world of Breast Cancer treatment - no doubt your friend did not have Oncotype DX done. Also - did she have bilat mx's like you and was she Stage 1?

I hope I've reassured you a bit - other women will come along soon to help you with their own stories. Good luck and let us know what your Oncotype DX score is and what tx your onc recommends!

Thanks for your reply, swimangel! I'll have to ask my friend whether she had Oncotype DX done. I don't believe she ever mentioned it.

I have another appointment with my oncologist in a couple of weeks to discuss the Oncotype DX score, whatever it may be, and what course of treatment we may follow.

If and when you start taking meds such as the Aromase Inhibitors you will probably need to have a bone density test to see if the meds are affecting your bones. I take Arimidex and it has casued some osteporosis which showed up on the scan. Now I take Boniva to help rebuild my bones.  If you have not previously had a bond density scan your ONC may request one now to have a base line.  The test is very easy and painless!

Remember that breast cancer can be different for every individual as there are so many variables and situations to be considered. Rarely are 2 cases completely alike.

i had a bilateral mastectomy in november 2008. my consulting med onc is a breast cancer treatment and research expert, mark moasser. he does not recommend any scans for me unless a problem presents itself. instead, he recommends tumor marker checks and bloodwork one month after chemo and radiation treatment ends, and then every four months afterward.

I had MRI and bone scan before I started treatment, but this was to see if there was any spread as I had gone about 7 years before getting treatment.  After chemo and surgery, I had a PET scan.
