Leg cramps driveing me insane

I have been on Tamox since Feb. My legs have suddenly started spasming all the time it never stops. I also get leg cramps all the time even during the day if I move the wrong way. I get nailed just about every night in both legs very hard to sleep. I am afraid to point my toes. I tried eating bananas drinking tonic water, streches, everything nothing seems to help. Anyone out there have this problem I'm looking for advice.

I have been on arimidex for 2 years 6 months and I have the same problem. I do drink tonic water..at least 8 ounces a day..it helps somewhat and sometimes. I also have restless leg syndrome and it has gotten much worse since the arimidex. I don't want to take medication for it as I take so many now it is mind boggling and I seriuosly can't afford to take any more prescriptions. I don't have any advice but I will keep checking back in here to see if others do. Thanks for bringing attention to this problem. I am sure we are not the only ones. Best wishes to you.

Hi rzxcd - I started tamox last June (a year ago). Started getting foot and calf cramps around January of this year (6 months later). Went for about 2 months with these hitting me almost every night and during the day if I stretched the wrong way. It's now June and they are better - usually go a week at a time without a foot/leg cramp then one will hit me again, but it is better. I'm hoping it's just a cycle you have to go through and it will continue to get better until it goes away. Maybe once my body finishes adjusting to the medicine??? Hopeful!

ohhhh I had terrible charlie horses in my calves while on tamoxifin....my mother the same too..the only thing we found to help was a ton of oj....I would get them mostly at night, turning over and pointing the toes...it would send me into a 20 minute rubbing fest...then I'd be up for the next hour or so..I didn't get them during the day as much, but my legs would be sore from the night before...I did drink a ton of water too during the day, but then you are up all night going to the bathroom....they say potassium, like you said bananas, and such..good luck KLynn

My Onc recommended the over-the-counter combo of magnesium, calcium and zinc. I believe each tab has about one-third of the daily requirement of each. I take one a day, at supper. Have been taking them for about 3 months, and I do think it's gotten a little better. At my last visit, she said I could bump it up to two per day, but I haven't. Just weary of so many wretched pills! Good luck -

For the short term, try some Tonic Water. It has cramp relieving Quinine.
Here's a word about it from Wikipedia:
" In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration limits the quinine content in tonic water to 83 ppm (83 mg per litre if calculated by mass), which is 0.25% to 0.50% of the concentration used in therapeutic tonic. Still, it is often recommended as a relief for cramps. Dr. Jim Mitterando states that "Quinine is one of the few treatments shown to help reduce nocturnal cramps. Quinine is found in low concentrations in tonic water (one-tenth of prescription dose). Drinking eight to 16 ounces at night can be a simple remedy."

Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxer. Try upping your dose of magnesium. I'm having SE's from my AL, too. I take Aromasin and am getting leg pains, HOT FLASHES and insomnia. The leg pain seems to be less when I take magnesium. All my best, Debs

I take Femara (and have previously taken Tamoxifen). I have had some charlie horses in my feet and calves which I think have been alleviated with calcium/magnesium/Vit D. The restless leg syndrome which started with Tamo and continues with Femara has been 'fixed' with 400 mcg of Folic Acid before bed. I also use Activ-On rubbed on my calves and it works very well. Hi all,
I've been on Tamox since January and have been having worsening cramps in my feet calves and even shins at night and esp. in the early hours of the morning. This week has been so bad that I am really sleep deprived on top of it all. Also, my right calf has felt sore and tender since a particularly bad night two nights ago; it's probably just irritated from the constant cramps, but of course, now I am worried that it could also be a blood clot. . . I have no other signs that indicate a clot, so I am monitoring it for now. Anyone else had this?

You need to load up on the calcium/magnesium. When I don't take mine I get cramps. When I take it, I don't get cramps. I take 1000 mg. a day. Tami

I'm here to second the opinion on taking enough minerals and drinking loads of water should take that misery away.
Magnesium citrate with a low dose B6, 25-50 mgs. should do it. But you have to find out how much magnesium to take to find relief for yourself. Mine works at 500 mgs. I do take calcium citrate too and that might be helping, but for me it was magnesium at the correct dosage. The B6 helps magnesium be absorbed. Take mg first before taking calcium. Wait a couple of hours then take calcium. I also take a D3 pill at the time I take magnesium. I'm leaving no stone unturned to get the mg absorbed because I hate those leg muscle cramps. I hope you find relief.

I tried everything, the magnesium, oj, vit b, but nothing helped me either. I was switched over to Arimidex after my oopher and within two weeks could tell the difference. After 6 weeks I realized that I had not had to jump out of bed or put on the heating pad at all. I do have the aches in the am with Arimidex. But nothing I can't handle now.

I just found this thread and all I can say is Thanks! I started tamoxifen at the end of Feb. and I have been having bad leg muscle cramps. My bloodwork also shows that I am deficient in folic acid. One more thing......

Okay, I just got my Calc+Mag supplements and a 1 litre bottle of Tonic Water! Am drinking now with a bit of lemon in it. Last night/this am I had the worst cramps yet. It feels like the fascia on the frong of my calf literally seizes up; When I try to stretch it out, then the back of my calf will charley horse. This often lasts several minutes. Sometimes as one leg subsides the other will start cramping; sometimes they both go at once! Needless to say, I am a bit sleep-deprived. If the supplements don't improve things I'm not sure what I will do. . .I'm in chemopause but my onc doesn't want to switch me to an AI until I've done 2 years of Tamox. I just re-read earlier posts and think I may try the activeon RubyTuesday!

Not to harp, but you are going to take the magnesium citrate with B6 alone, not with calcium? It's important. Calcium offsets our magnesium absorption if taken together. To give this a fair test, it has to be done a certain way. Wait a couple of hours before taking calcium. I hope it works for you. Also, drink loads of water. Oh, and 2 brazil nuts daily. Selenium helps our muscles too.

Thanks Rosemary - I hadn't known this; I just bought a big bottle of combination Calc+Mag tablets. If they counteract one another - why do they package/market them this way! Sheesh. I am taking a high dosage, so perhaps I will still absorb enough from the combo (333 Calc and 167 Mag x 3 daily - this was the recommendation of a complementary MD for overall health post-treatment. I also take 1000 iu of D3 daily). What is the role of B6?

I've had these cramps on and off for many years. A nutritional specialist who is also a medical practitioner reccommended that I take a combo of potassium and magnesium. I also try to have tonic water at least 3 times a week. When I stick to it it works, but sometimes I runout or just get sick of taking so many pills and then it comes back.
You just have to keep taking the pills.

B6 at a low dose aids in magnesium absorption. If you take a B complex that should cover all the synergy of the B vitamins, and then magnesium should be absorbed better.
It took me one whole year of researching to find the calcium/magnesium offsetting each other research. It was said here by a specialist and I couldn't believe my eyes. Then I went looking for the research and there it was. It wasn't easy to find. On the off chance of them knowing what they're talking about, I've been taking my minerals separately. It's just more pills to take, giant pain, but its worth it. So, if your not getting relief from the cramping, you might want to buy magnesium citrate and take it 2 hours before the calcium. Just to give it a fair chance to work for you.

Yes, I try to eat foods high in potassium too. I have pills for it in case there are days when I'm not getting in a lot of potassium. Potassium regulates the fluids in our body and that helps with muscle pains.

Thanks Rosemary - I will pick up some B6 and give it a try (sigh). I am so not a pill person - I work odd hours and eat at different times every day; makes it tricky being consistent, but will give it a go. On the upside, for the last two days I took the combo pills and 2 8oz. glasses of tonic water and have had no cramps! I had such a good sleep last night, finally.

Then good news for you! Remember tonic water is just a glass of sugar, so that's used for emergency relief. I do love tonic and lemon though...so refreshing.

I've always taken Vitamin E for leg cramps and charlie horses. When I started on Arimidex, the leg cramps started, and I immediately started on the E. Haven't had them since.

It's the quinine in the tonic water that helps.

That was surprising to hear that you shouldn't take magnesium with calcium, since I too have the calmag combo. I looked around and found this -- but I couldn't find anything on NOT taking them together?
RESEARCH BRIEF
Calcium is transported through the body using a series of transport proteins called 'calcium binding proteins'. Among these are: parvalbumin, calmodulin, oncomodulin and more. These compounds pick up calcium in areas of high calcium concentration. They tend to release the calcium in the presence of high magnesium concentration. This is because both the calcium and the magnesium share the same electronic charge (+2). This mechanism efficiently delivers calcium to be deposited into the bone, provided that there is sufficient magnesium for the subsequent release of the calcium atoms. This is why calcium and magnesium are found to be much more effective when dosed together as a supplement. When the calcium is released, enzymes in the bone cells attract higher levels of the calcium to help builds stronger bones. Over time, this will increase bone density.

I have been helped immensely by Quinine. As soon as I feel a cramp coming on, I take one pill and that stops the cramp. Ask your dr. for a prescription.

Oh my gosh. I have just finished my 5 years of tamox and I never made the connection. I just thought my leg cramps were due to walking more steps, new work boots or whatever. I never made the connection to the tamox. Now that I'm done, I will pay attention to my leg cramps to see if they stop. these boards are soooo informative.

I have gotten a couple of leg cramps at night since being on Tamoxifen. What is the difference between a leg cramp and a charlie horse? I would describe mine as a charlie horse, but are they one in the same? I get woken up by them at night, and you feel like you can't even move a muscle until it goes away after a minute or so, it just kills.

UPDATE, Thanks all of you for your replys. I am still suffering these dang cramps and the legs never quit spasming day or nite. I tried all the suggestions. My ONC checked my blood for clues she took me off the Tamox for 3 weeks and nothing they were aweful the first two weeks but little milder the 3rd week. My ONC did not think it was the Tamox. Since then I have been to my primary phy she sent me to a rehab doc because I also suffer from sciatica. the Rehab doc sent me to a neorologist who took 7 tubes of blood and examined me & gave me my 3rd perscription of muscle relaxer the first two did nothing. I've sure got some stubborn legs. I see my ONC next Wed for yet another follow up oh I'm sooooo exhausted. I had another thought I was on clinical trial for Avastin just finished that Jul 31st wonder if thats the culprit. I looked up the known effects but did not find anything about legs like mine hummm..... I just venting I'm so glad for this site that I can!

When I goggled Avastin & leg cramps several references came up ndicating that others are having the same problem. Have you talked to the folks that are running the study you are in? Also trying calling manufacturer to see if they have had reports of Avastin & leeg cramps.

Hi-I started taking more calcium, 1 pill at night and one in the morning w/ a multi-vitamin. I also added magnesium-200 mg per night. I finally found the magnesium chelate at Whole Foods. I read on these threads that the chelate is better absorbed than the oxide.
My feet/heel's are feeling better. I'm at 1200mg calc. w/ 200 magnesium., I know I have to boost the magnesium up a little but for now I'm OK w/200 mg.
P.S. I'm on tamoxifen and have been for a year this month-the feet/heel pain started last month in July.

When on Tamoxifen I would have awfull leg cramps at night. When I switched to Fermara they were gone. Of course Femara brought a lot of new issues...
