Hi Everyone,
Some of you have already seen this news from my Facebook page (and thank you so much for your messages of love and support), but I'm so sorry to say that I lost my mother in law on Saturday. She was in the hospital last week due to pain and difficulty breathing. She was actually starting to feel better and was going to go home last Wednesday, but that morning she had a massive seizure and went into a coma from which she would not recover.
Today feels especially weird as it's my two year cancerversary. As I was reflecting on my own survival and thinking about the things that happened to me on my own journey, I immediately thought of all of you, and how lucky I was to find you all to help me overcome my own obstacles. Just needed to send you all a very big hug.
DeAnn
-
DeAnn, I am so terribly sorry. Thank you for posting over here, b/c I haven't been on FB lately and hadn't seen the news. Please accept my deepest condolences, and tell your husband I am so sorry for the loss of his mother. I will be holding both of you in my prayers.
Cancer sucks. Thank goodness we have each other to lean on.
-
Well D, we're here for you to hug. And we're huggin' you right back, sweet girl.
Hey June...pardon my slow-on-the-uptake but was that a SONG you were singing to us? KC and the Sunshine band (or whoever they were?) How fun! I've had it in the back of my mind ever since you posted that and couldn't figure out why. So PART of my brain recognized it as a song, but the here-i-am-in-consciousness part didn't. (Then there was the part of me dancing, and the other part not. THAT was a little wierd.
Whatever.
-
Dear DeAnn, I was so sorry to read of your family's loss. You're in our hearts and prayers during this so very sad time. Many many hugs to you and your family.
Kaye.....where WERE you in 1980 when Kool & the Gang did Celebration and it hit #1 on the charts, girl????????? Do you mean to tell me they didn't play it at your daughter's reception??? If not, it just MUST have been an oversight!!! LOL
Hugs to all,
June
-
AH yes! THAT'S right, Kool & the Gang! 1980! Hmmmn. According to my calculations, I was pregnant. (But my soul was dancing inside...I truly was "celebrating good times"!)
Hey, anyone on Arimidex, but NOT on Fosomax? I'm going to check the Arimidex thread, but I thought I'd ask here, too. My bone mineral density is getting worse. Still just osteopenia, but progressing. I'm wondering what some other options are....I'm not sure I want to take Fosomax and thought I'd do a little preliminary research before talking to the Doc.
-
Hi Kaye. I am on Arimidex and not the other. My bone density has been checked - I had a baseline since 10 yrs ago, and it hasn't moved, but I am taking Arimidex only since - oh god I don't remember! I guess 4 months? something like that.
I am watching it, as I have low bone density running in the family - but I wolf down so much yogurt and cheeses, that maybe that helps...
-
Kaye and lilith,
I'm not on either. However, 5 months ago diagnosed with osteopenia also. Oncologist said that so many medical studies have been done regarding bone loss and vitamin D shortage. I had a baseline bone density done 8 years ago and it was great......my reading radiologists said no evidence at all of bone loss
at that time. Then just recently, the new dx. When my new oncologist tested my vitamin D level, it was horrid! Point of all of this is to ask if you both have had your vitamin D levels checked. She put me on a very high strength of vitamin D for 6 weeks to really boost my level (prescription) and then OTC 1000 IU a day plus 1200 mg. of calcium. I told her I was really suprised at the dx due to the fact that I am a big milk drinker and have lived in the sunbelt almost 40 years. She explained that it didn't matter because my body wasn't able to metabolize the calcium without sufficient vitamin D and that the dairy and sun wasn't enough to offset the deficiency.
hugs to all....
June
-
June, go figure. it is all too complicated for me. Jeez I didn't choose medical studies, why do I get stuck with them anyway???
Anyway. nice to hear back from all of you gals - it has been too busy recently. big hugs to all.

Hi All! I actually have lots of good news to report this time!
First, I had my wedding performance yesterday and WHEW! it all went well! It was a beautiful sunny day (a little windy which made the sound a little tricky, but other than that gorgeous!). The wedding was an outdoor ceremony on an island on the Mississippi River in St. Paul, so we had the river in the background, the sun shining, and a dancing butterfly in the garden behind us. I didn't hit one wrong note. You would have been so proud of me, Kaye! I had practiced standing up and playing for many hours, and I think I just went on autopilot because I wasn't even nervous. It was actually kind of fun, and I think I might need to do more of this Performing thing!
Second, I had my two year oncology appt. and got the results of my echocardiogram. Heart function is still totally normal and it doesn't appear that the Herceptin and chemo had an adverse affect on my heart. This was one of my biggest concerns about the chemo I had, so that was a big relief.
Third...after two years I actually got my period back this week! Not that I especially enjoy having it again, but I think it is a sign that my body has finally returned to normal from everything that it has been through. I guess that means I will have to go through hot flashes again when I actually do go through menopause for real. Bummer. But still, I just feel like... I am back to myself a little bit more.
Lilith and June, I've been reading a little bit about bone strength, etc, and one thing that I've read is that silica is really important. It actually helps your body to assimilate calcium and vitamin D. You can get silica from apples, oranges, cherries, raisins, almonds, raw cabbage, onions, carrots, pumpkin, cucumber, fish, honey, oats, unrefined grains/cereals with high fibre content, and nuts and seeds.
Hope you are all having a lovely day! I'm about to head over to the outdoor pool at our health club today and enjoy a bit of the sunshine!
DeAnn
-
Congrats on the successful wedding gig, DeAnn! Very cool!
And also glad that your heart function is good--great news. I totally understand about being happy your period came back--I felt the same way with mine, like my body was starting to work normally again. After about six months of being pretty regular when it came back, it's been getting really irregular, but I'd also taken a month off from Tamoxifen and just started it back up, so that may have something to do with it.
Enjoy the pool! We'll be swimming today, too. It's hot, hot, hot today.
-
Bonjour,
I know that I only post every now and then here since I accidentally posted the first time a year ago thinking it was Aug 08 instead of 07. But I still read your posts here. I had my very first mammo since my lumpectomy last June and it was normal. I just wanted to share that with you.
Wishing you all continued happiness and good health.
xxxx
-
Good news on the mammo, Roya! Glad you checked in.
-
Thanks for sharing your great news, Roya! So glad to hear that you are doing well!!
-
so happy to read about you as well, Roya. Each of us checking in with great news put a smile on my face!
DeAnn, congratulations on your gig. It takes courage to stand up and perform...
we all knew already you are brave and talented, and it is a wonderful to know that you are getting the recognition you so deserve.
Hugs!
-
Hello Ladies!
Hey, Roya - thanks for checking in, and congrats on the good report! Hey, I met two gals from your thread - August 08 - here in my town! It was good to get together and share a cup of coffee. (Well. Actually, they had their OWN coffee.)
DeAnn, GOOD JOB! And even with WIND...well, girl. You Rock. That is a challenge. And Yes, performing is what makes it all worth it. (IMHO)
June - I had my D3 levels checked, I was a little low, so I'm on 4,000iu of D3 daily, plus 1450 of Calcium. I really don't want to be on Fosamax if I can avoid it. But apparently I need to do something now.....so I've got the appt on the 11th with the endo at CofH to pick her brain.
Jackie?...I don't know if I told you we have our plane tix for our trip back east. We'll be there the first week in August. I really hope we can hook up for a lunch or something. We're planning stuff to do, but there will be some hang-time too...sooooo maybe we can hang!
Hey, I got a call about two weeks ago from my daughter who announced that she's pregnant. I'M A GRANDMA. WooooooHOOOOOO! I just came back from visiting her in Oregon...she's pretty darn sick. They've got her on a med ("Reglan") that they say is safe. I freaked, with visions of Thalidamide in my brain. Hopefully she'll (and the baby) will be ok.
Nash, is it hot enough for you down there? It was 112 today here. Nice and toasty. It was even 97 Thursday in PORTLAND, for pete's sake. Ahhhhhh. Summer.
-
Me again.
Hey, Nash, did you see the transcript from the 2009 ASCO meeting? There was a question answered on that "thermo" screen/scan that you did. It's on here somewhere. I'm looking for it to put a link.
-
http://www.breastcancer.org/news_research/ask_expert/06_2009/question_15.jsp
ok. There you go. If that doesn't work, it's in the Ask the Experts section, on the home page.
-
Thanks for the link, Kaye!
And congrats on the pending Grandmahood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How exciting!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Nash,
Good news! So glad you got all your Zometa tx covered under your insurance! Now let's hope that the current adminstration (O.B.A.M.A.) doesn't mess everything up, by instituting the National Healthcare plan...
Oh, and thanks for askoing how my follow ups went. I didn't finish til a couple of weeks ago.
My onc. never fails to infuriate me. When I saw him a couple of weeks ago, he said to me:
You seem to have alot of anxiety... (about recurrence)... DUH! Then he said:
You will eventually come to accept that you ARE GOING TO DIE!!!
?? I was hoping for :
You found the bc early, and you had very aggressive treatment... there's no reason that you won't live to a very ripe old age, and die from old age...
Anyway.... sorry I've been away.
I did get a p/t job, working as cashier at a produce market. It's ok, and the people are very nice. The owner is a nice family, and they are all very nice....
Hugs to all,
Harley
-
Oh, Harley, sorry to hear your onc was so insensitive. Sheesh. Glad to hear you got a new job, though--sounds like it's working out.
-
Nash,
Thanks!
Yes, this job is so much better than that dress shoppe where I worked LAST summer! They understand when I need time off for dr. appts., and I've even taken time off to go on a little mini vacation.
My dh and I are going to Key West! We are leaving Friday, and we'll be gone for a week. I'm really looking forward to it!!
Take care, everyone.Hugs
Harley
-
Hi All,
Love to hear everybody's good news! And extra congratulations to Grandma Kaye!! Very cool! You will be an awesome grandma.
Hey Kaye and Nash. I'm coming to California in October! I actually have my plane tickets and everything. As you know, we were planning to go with my MIL and family, but since that turned out the way it did, we decided that my parents weren't getting any younger either, and we should take them. We're going to be staying at a condo in Oceanside for the week.I don't know what the plans for the week are, but I'd love to get together with you. We're coming the week of October 3rd-9th. Are you guys free at any point that week?
DeAnn
-
Oh my gosh, DeAnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yipee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I live about 20 minutes from Oceanside. Let's definately plan to see each other! Kaye, can you come on down?
-
Harley, Have a GREAT TIME. Key West has been on my "must do" list for years. I hear it's wonderful. Oh well, Someday!
Nash, D...I AM SO THERE. October will be perfect. Its on my calendar...You name the day. I CAN'T WAIT!!! Anybody else want a mini-vacation at a wonderful So Cal beach, at a PERFECT time of the year?
AGGGGGGHHHHH I'm SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
hi... thanks!
Oh, I'm so jealous! I probably won't be able to come to CA in October... bummer!!
I seem to be here on the East coast, and I feel like I'm the only one who lives on the East coast... from my bc.org friends, that is....
Kaye,
Congratulation, Grandma!!
Hugs to all
Harley
-
Harley, I wish you lived closer, too!
-
I wish we ALL lived "closer". Wherever that would be. Preferably somewhere in the Frozen North, right about now. (Can you tell..? It's 113 degrees at 5:pm. It's ok. dh sets the a/c at 74 and I don't go outside.)
-
Kaye....grandma!!! wonderful wonderful news. I'm so happy for your family. Call me when you get here....I'm ready to hang.
Harley....I'm so happy for you that you like your new job.
Ladies.....hugs to all. DeAnn....sounds like you did a great job.
I'm going a little coo coo right now with some personal problems and will talk to you ladies about it when the words can come out.....without buckets of tears.
Hugs to all, Jackie
