One of my close friends (36yrs old with a 1yr old child) was just diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo surgery this month.  As she lives far I will not be able to visit but would like to send a card and possibly a gift.  I've tried for the last 4 hours to compose a note but just can't seem to get into to words what I'd like to say.  Please help me.  What should I write???  Any suggestions?  And is there a gift that you think would be appropriate?  I'd really, really appreciate any advice, thanks.

I love "thinking of you" cards -- NOT Get Well ones.   If the person is "religious" an angel pin or bookmark with an angel.   This has worked for most situations where I need to write something:   " I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear from you.  But I am sad to hear your news.  Please know that you are my friend and I will pray for you. Keep in touch and if you like I will phone you in a few days."   (again if the "religious" type).

Some things that I appreciated reading in my cards ... you're sorry she is going through this; you will keep her in your thoughts every day (and prayers, if you're a person of faith); she can call you any time (day or night).

    These were my favorite gifts:

Bookstore gift cards - I used them to buy a couple of breast cancer books and some to read during the many hours I spent in doctors' waiting rooms.

Restaurant gift cards - pick one that does carry-out.

Shawl or sweater - many people get cold during chemo; at home, my shawls make me think of the person who gave it to me and remember that person is thinking about me.

Maid service - My brother lives far away so he sent money for me to have the house professionally cleaned.

I hope these ideas help. With a friend like you, I know she'll get through this.

Ladies, thank you soooo much for your suggestions.  They were such a great help and I just sealed the card and package.  Many thanks again!

Just before my surgery my friend gave me bed jacket made from a thick fuzzy fabric that is incredibly soft. I didn't think much about it before surgery beyond the convenience of it but have since found it is the only thing I could tolerate touching my skin starting the day I came home from the hospital. I still use it across my chest at night as I approach three months out bilat mast as it is soo comfortable and warm. I bless this woman every day for her thoughtfulness.

I agree that the get well soon kind of wishes didn't hit the right note although I appreciated the thought and effort. My sister in law sent me a card about every week the first six weeks, some sweet, some funny and some just thinking about me .... I loved it!!

Hope this post isn't too late for you.
