ZOMETA FOR Low Bone Density

Has anyone else been told to consider Zometa- I got a low( not too low-) osteo pina bone density score.

I am Stage 3 breast cancer( it has been 4 yrs now)- my Dr. says that they are thinking

of giving this prophylactically- I haven't had a metasis to my bone( although in these 4 yrs they haven't given me a Pet Scan. The Dr, said that their is evidence that a low score might show indication of a possible link to metasis to the bone.  I say- how about having had a hysterectomy at 38 and being on Arimidex for 4 yrs - doesn't that lower bone density. I am going to another Dr.

for another opinion. I also am Brac 2 so I am looking at this drug that has long term effects- Who can help me/????? Anyone else on this drug.

Thanks

I had my ovaries removed as I was IDC and ER 100% and PR 100% premenopause.  Started on Tamox for a 4 months and than switched to Femara.  I had baseline Dexascan as normal, 2nd Dexascan showing bone loss but stilll in range, 3rd Dexascan showed Osteopenia after 20 months on Femara.  My body is starving for estrogen and all the Calcium, Mg, Vitamin D supplements I take daily did not slow down the progression of bone loss.  My onc started me on Zometa for the next 3 years every 6 months.  I get my 2nd infusion in August.  I feel I have no choice but to take Femara to hopefully control teh bc and take Zometa to save my bones.

    Hey there Heartbroken,

I'm going through something similar right now...Ughhhh...another thing to think about....

I just went for my first bone density test, believe it or not...

I am stage 4 already, but no bone mets ..so far..

My bd test showed loss, and put me into the ospeopenia category..loss at hip , and spine, fracture risk moderate...I haven't been to my onc.yet (got the results early) but I know he was talking about one of the drugs working for bd also...I'm not crazy about the Zometa, since it was one of the drugs that shut my mothers kidneys down...She had bone mets, and was given Zometa monthly, so I'm hoping getting it every 6 months may not effect the kidneys..Have to talk this one over with him... I've been getting lupron shots for over 3 1/2 yrs, now , which I'm sure is the cause of the bone loss.. I'm going in next week to have my ovaries finally removed.which I know will make the situation worse..uggg..My body just keeps producing estrogen no matter what they do..I guess my bones would be a hell of a lot worse it they weren't still producing the esto. It just seems like it is a vicious cycle, one that never stops...

I see my  onc next week, so I'll let you know what he thinks, and I see the gyno/onc, (the one removing the ovaries ) next week too, so he may have a different thought..I'll keep you posted...

    Good luck Klynn

I was given osteopinea dx about 9 years ago and did weekly Fosamax back then. Four and half years ago I had first bc dx along with BRCA2. Had my ovaries out. BC was tn so no hormone therapy. Now have second bc dx...this one is ES+/PR+ so am expecting to take an AI as well as some kind of bone saving medication. Not sure what the onc will suggest but I'm in the process of investigating in preparation for my next meeting with her. I'm interested in what others are doing.
