My Wife's Breast Cancer Success Story

My wife "Kitti" was diagnose with BC in her left areola back in April of 2000.  Needless to say, she was horrified!  I was with her in the room with the oncologist delivered the grim news.  Of course, a second opinion was in order.

The diagnosis was confirmed, after a biopsy and she was given the options of: a lumpectomy with radiation, or, chemo and radiation, or, a mastectomy of the left breast with radiation.  "Kitti" opted for a mastectomy with no chemo, or, radiation; since the lesion was localized to the areola.  She did agree to take Tamoxifen.

The surgery occurred in May of 2000.  Of course, I was there, every step of the way.  Interestingly, one of the attending nurses asked if I would be around after the surgery and reconstruction.  I personally thought that it was a rather curious question.  But, then she clarified why she asked it.  She stated "many men leave their wives or partners after breast surgery."

Frankly, I could not believe that.  The thought never entered by mind to do such a thing.  How could I leave my wife because she was ill?  What kind of man would leave his wife during the most difficult, emotionally exhausing and fearful time of her life; when she has a potentially deadly sickness?  Of course, the idea was ridiculous to me.  How would I feel if my wife left me simply because I had to have a diseased testical surgically removed?

In 2003, while still on Tamoxifen, we were introduced to a remarkable scientifically-sound natural protein therapy to optimize her immune system, which her oncologist approved.  With wonderful test results at each annual visit; in May of 2005, she was pronounced CANCER-FREE and taken off of Tamoxifen.  We were estatic!

Since May of 2005, she has continued to daily utilize the protein therapy as a part of her every day diet.

Today, in 2009, after receiving an excellent test report from her most recent annual checkup (April), "Kitti" remains cancer-free and enjoying her life; and I am enjoying it with her.  That's the way it should be!

However, I see you all over the boards here.........and wonder if you are trying to "sell" something?  My apologies if I am wrong.

Wayne, I am so glad to hear your wife is doing so well, but all of us cancer patients know we are not cured unless we die of something else...You can live cancer-free for your whole life but you still have some cancer cells in your body......Cancer free only means you don't have any detectable cancer in your body...You still have microscpoic cancer cells somewhere...I have known women who have been cancer free or as we call it NED for 19 or 20 years and then BAM they are hit even harder than the first time.....I truly hope your wife stays cancer free forever But I am like Sharon, wondering if you are trying ot sell something.......And why make up  a name for your wife?......We use our real spouses names here...We are honest with each other and don't need to make up names.....

Ladies, I hear YOU!  I apologize if you got the impression I am trying to "sell" something, or, get someone to join something.

Perhaps, you have heard similar accounts; I don't know.  However, what I do know is that the information that I am sharing about my wife, Anita, aka "Kitti," (for those of you who thinks she is made up!), is not about a product, but, about a small molecule already in our bodies.  It's call glutathone.  You should look it up in any medical reference.  Better yet, why not ask your own doctors about it.  Many specialists are familiar with it's role in the body and its effect on cancer and the immune system.

By the way, I never said my wife was CURED.  I stated that she was pronounced CANCER-FREE, those are the words of her oncologist; not mine.

Furthermore, I do not believe any product can cure any disease.  But, I do believe that our bodies can be helped to put up a stronger defense against diseases, like cancer.  Or, if a person is taking chemo and/or radiation for their cancers; if there is a way to lessen the challenging side effects of the treatments without adversely affecting the efficacy of the treatment; then, I believe the patient should be informed about it.  Don't you?

Look, what I'm sharing can be researched at any good medical research website, like, www.pubmed.com, www.nih.com, and Center for Disease Control at, www.cdc.gov.

Oh, by the way; you might want to ask your doctor about glutathione and its role in relation to cancers.

So, get off your high horses and give me a chance to contribute as a passionate husband who has stayed and continues to stay by his still-sensitive wife.

If there was truly a cure, the people who find it will receive a Nobel Prize. It is fearmongering to imply that there is a potential "cure" that is being hidden from us. Healthy lifestyle is important but despite it, many of us get bc anyway. Everyone has to do what is best for him or herself and has to feel comfortable with their own decisions. But I do take offense, Waynejay, that you seem to be promoting your own agenda on these boards. I do commend you for being supportive of  your wife.

    Holly,

The links you are referring too were requested by one of the members on that forum.  She asked if anyone knew of sites with alternative (complementary) therapies.  I simply provided her with a complementary therapy link and a research link. (By the way, some of the information on that research link can be found in your doctor's Physician's Desk Reference (PDR).  You should ask about it.

If the moderators feel that my sincere desire to share my wife's inspiring story, which is what this forum is about, 'crosses the line,' and that I be restricted from any sharing on any of these forums, I will wholeheartedly respect their decision.

Frankly, I am surprised at such negative attacks from women who are looking for encouraging information and inspiring true stories.

Perhaps, my enthusiasm over my wife's recovery, which was greatly impacted by her immune system's response to the cancer, spurs my passion on this subject.  Nonetheless, I am not interested in "selling" anything to any of these courageous women suffering from cancer.  However, if I sincerely believe, as I do, that based on sound science as well as the experiences of a number of my wife and several of her personal friends with cancer, that the information about glutathione is at least worth investigating, I feel that each cancer sufferer should know about this research and ask their healthcare practioner about it.

Holly, despite the unkind statement that you made, I want everyone who has followed these posts to know that I have been married to Kitti for 35 years.  We have two married daughters both of whom could be potentially at risk because of Kitti's cancer history.

By the way, the experience I told of my wife would not have been complete if I did not include the part about her immune system.  In fact, Kitti's story is part of the reason why I actually changed professions from a Electrical Utility Systems Manager, to become a wellness consultant.  Believe or not, I wanted to bring some measure of hope and comfort to other families facing this disease.

Happily, Kitti and I have shared her story with others who have cancer, who have enjoyed similar improvements with their doctor's support; such as: Alfreda P.(Georgia), Susie B. (Florida), Marcia G. (Georgia).  These ARE all real people with real touching stories.

Waynejay I apologize for the unkind stratement I made about you maybe not being married at all but you have to understand we have sooooo many people who come on here claiming their wife or mother or sister or aunt or whoever was cured through some kind of "cure" or other that we are very leery.......I apologize for hurting your feelings......I had no right to do that......It's just the way yo came off from the start......I understand that you are thrilled with your wife's continuing good health and frankly so am I........I wish ALL the ladies here had continuous good health and were all cancer free but it just isn't happening and frankly it won't.......You have no idea how many women on here wo never drank never smoked lived a very healthy life ate all the right food and exercised just right and had lean body mass and all that and STILL got breast cancer (some of them are stage 4 from the start)......I will ask my onc about this glutathione.........I am sorry but we get so many trolls on here you would not believe it..........

    Holly,

Your apology is sincerely accepted.  Let me also take this time to apologize to any of the women who were offended by my statement.  It was in reaction to all of the accusations as to my motives.

After some recent reflection on the reactions I received from some of the "family" here, it dawned on me that perhaps, because of past and current attempts to offer a cancer "cure" and facing the fears, disappointments and frustrations associated with the conventional treatments; it is somewhat understandable why some feel compelled to "pounce" on anyone, or anything that smacks of commercialising on the illness of others.

Of course, you must understand that, although, not a woman, I have been with Kitti to every single doctor's appointment, test, consultation, you name it.  We've learned quite a bit about taking more responsibility for one's own health, since her bout with cancer.  We have literally gone through this ordeal together.  I am extremely proud of my wife and I feel that every sufferer should have strong moral support; every step of the way.

Yet, we have personally witnessed women as advanced as Stage IV, desperate for assistance after the doctors have said to them, "there is nothing more that we can do."; have remarkable improvements once their immune systems were optimized.  This is clinically sound.

Even Kitti's oncologist, who was familiar with the relationship between this self-produced protein, glutathione, and the immune system; though advising that we continue her personal therapy, sadly, likely said nothing about this to the other 25 women with cancer, anxiously awaiting in his office. Further, even though the PDR specifically states cancer is essentially a "glutathione-deficient state" and there are literally tens of thousands of research articles on it, many cancer patients have never heard of it.  Why not?

Frankly, this angered me.  Those women were every bit as worthy as my wife to know what we had learned.  Of course, under the circumstances we could not say anything to them.  Perhaps, some, if not all of them, may have had similar outcomes if their immune systems were working more correctly.

So Kitti remains NED (instead of Cancer-free).  We are so grateful.  You can be sure that I will continue to do everything in my power to insure that her immune system stays optimized.  Our gratitude for what we have learned about how to do this moves me to at least encourage cancer sufferers to check into this.  After all, it is YOUR body and YOUR life.

Wayne, you are insinuating that the medical profession as a whole is keeping the potential cancer cure from the world ... that is a huge conspiracy accusation. I challenge you ... if you have scientific evidence of what a glutathione deficient state means to a cure for breast cancer that you take your evidence to the media. If you are right it will be published and reported from all media outlets and everyone will know. When you go "quietly" on websites such as this, you are not being totally forthright and your motivation will be challenged. Go talk to Oprah.....or CNN....or any mainstream media ... let the world hear about it .....and present your scientific evidence for all to see.

I had to go to WebMD to check this out .. there is some truth this supplement but it's not really that great as a supplement but better to get out of foods or fish oil ...

webmd has about 3 pages on it ... go look it up.  I think I better be serious about my fish oil pills.

Glutathione: New Supplement on the Block

Cure-All or Snake Oil? By Alison Palkhivala
    WebMD Feature

July 30, 2001 -- Who wouldn't like to get their hands on a naturally occurring substance that acts as an antioxidant, an immune system booster, and a detoxifier? Something that can help your body repair damage caused by stress, pollution, radiation, infection, drugs, poor diet, aging, injury, trauma, and burns?

A handful of researchers are saying the antioxidant glutathione can do all that and maybe more. But can you believe such sweeping claims? What's the evidence to back them up? Here are what three experts have to say:

    What Is Glutathione?

"Glutathione is a very interesting, very small molecule that's [produced by the body and] found in every cell," says Gustavo Bounous, MD, director of research and development at Immunotec and a retired professor of surgery at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. "It's the [body's] most important antioxidant because it's within the cell."

Antioxidants -- the most well known of which are vitamins C and E -- are important for good health because they neutralize free radicals, which can build up in cells and cause damage. Because glutathione exists within the cells, it is in a prime position to neutralize free radicals. It also has potentially widespread health benefits because it can be found in all types of cells, including the cells of the immune system, whose job is to fight disease.

Glutathione occurs naturally in many foods, and people who eat well probably have enough in their diets, says Dean Jones, PhD, professor of biochemistry and director of nutritional health sciences at Emory University in Atlanta. Those with diets high in fresh fruits and vegetables and freshly prepared meats are most likely just fine. On the other hand, those with poor diets may get too little.

    What Does Glutathione Do?

The strong antioxidant effect of glutathione helps keep cells running smoothly. Bounous and another glutathione expert, Jeremy Appleton, ND, say it also helps the liver remove chemicals that are foreign to the body, such as drugs and pollutants.

Appleton is chairman of the department of nutrition at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Ore., and senior science editor for Healthnotes, a database on complementary and alternative medicine available at newspaper stands and health food stores.

Evidence for the important role that glutathione plays in health comes from studies in people who are severely ill.

"If you look in a hospital situation at people who have cancer, AIDS, or other very serious disease, almost invariably they are depleted in glutathione," says Appleton. "The reasons for this are not completely understood, but we do know that glutathione is extremely important for maintaining intracellular health."

Here's the rest of the article from WebMd.  Remember, this was written in 2001.  There's probably been more research done.

Jader, where did you get the idea of taking more fish oil would do the trick?

    Now to the article:

    http://www.webmd.com/diet/features/glutathione-new-supplement-on-block?page=2

    How Should Glutathione Be Taken?

Glutathione is probably not well absorbed into the body when taken by mouth. One way to get around that is to take it by vein. A more practical solution is to take the precursors -- that is, the molecules the body needs to make glutathione -- rather than glutathione itself. While there is no solid proof this works, the consensus among experts is that that doing so will increase the amount of glutathione in the cells.

Bounous has developed a glutathione-enhancing product called Immunocal, which is made up of glutathione precursors, mainly the amino acid cysteine.

    Who Does Glutathione Help?

Animal and laboratory studies have demonstrated that glutathione has the potential to fight almost any disease, particularly those associated with aging, since free radical damage is the cause of many of the diseases of old age.

"Theoretically, there are many very strong arguments in favor of a therapeutic use of glutathione," says Appleton. "But when people have actually tried to use glutathione as an oral supplement, nasal spray, or intravenously, the results have been more of a preliminary nature. The amount of research on glutathione as a supplement ... is very limited."

Nevertheless, people have tried glutathione for the treatment of a whole host of conditions, including cancer, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cataracts, and male infertility.

The best studies have been conducted in cancer. One study involved women with ovarian cancer who were being treated with chemotherapy. Some of the women were also treated with intravenous glutathione. Those given the glutathione not only had fewer side effects from the chemotherapy but also had better overall survival rates.

Myriam Abalain of Montreal, Canada, is one of the many people who have taken Bounous's Immunocal to combat cancer. In 1996, at age 33, a routine PAP smear revealed she had precancerous cells on her cervix, which is one step away from having cervical cancer. The three specialists she visited all told her that a hysterectomy was her only option, but she hesitated to have such major, life-altering surgery.

Instead, she waited. For more than two years, her condition remained stable. Then a friend suggested she try Immunocal. After eight months of taking the supplement, her physician could no longer detect any precancerous cells. Does this mean Immunocal cured her? It's hard to say based on just one case like hers. It is possible her body went into remission naturally.

Even Bounous acknowledges there's no real proof his product cured her cancer, but he's working on conducting good clinical research, comparing individuals with cancer taking glutathione to those who are not.

    What Are the Risks?

Overall, taking glutathione or its precursors in reasonable amounts appears to be quite safe, although it should be avoided in people with milk protein allergies and in those who have received an organ transplant. There is also some concern, however, about the safety of taking glutathione for the one condition for which there is the greatest evidence of its usefulness: cancer.

    What Are the Risks? continued...

"People don't get concerned about these health-promoting [supplements] until they're in their 50s and 60s," says Emory's Dean Jones. At that point, they may already have the initial precancerous [cells]. Therefore, the supplements, just like they promote health in normal tissues, might promote health in the precancerous tissue."

Appleton recognizes this possibility but says "there's no evidence that supplementing with glutathione, even intravenously, is in any way going to make any cancer worse. In fact, the evidence we have suggests the opposite. It suggests that glutathione and other antioxidants, far from interfering with the activity of chemotherapy, appear to reduce side effects without decreasing efficacy and may, in fact, improve the efficacy of the chemotherapy in fighting cancer."

Bounous says his research has demonstrated that taking Immunocal actually lowers glutathione in cancer cells while increasing it in normal cells. As a result, the cancer cells are more vulnerable to chemotherapy, and the normal cells are protected.

The upshot? The experts disagree on who should take glutathione or its precursors. Bounous says everyone should take it in order to optimize overall health. Appleton would reserve it for people with cancer. Jones says it might only prove beneficial for those who eat poorly and are thus unlikely to be getting much glutathione or its precursors in their diet.

They all acknowledge that people with severe diseases known to be associated with low glutathione levels, such as AIDS, may well benefit from the supplement, although there is no proof to this effect.

For her part, Myriam Abalain is still taking Immunocal and feeling fine. "I'm doing pretty good now," she says. "I'm in better shape than ever!"
