Worried.. Cost of Test ..

Hey everyone, Im new and this is my first post. Smile. Im really worried cause I want to get the BRCA bloodtest done and it's cost $23,000.00 (TT), which is abt $161,000.00 USD. That s#%t is ridic! I live in Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies.

 Im high risk cause my mother died of it. When she was diagnosed, she was told to have a mastectomy immediately, but my grandmother who lived in Virginia, didn't think Trinidad was "capable"Frown to do the procedure and was arranging for her to fly to Richmond to do it. Organising things took to long, after a while, it spread to her nodes and well she passed away later on.  I don't want to die from this disease. I am aware of it and I want to prepare myself, but that is to expensive. I could fly to the US and do it over their instead. well I guess, so um how uch does it usually cost??? Anyone knows...

    The BRCA test is around $3000 (U.S.) through Myriad labs, which is the only lab that does the genetic testing because they have a patent.

    Welcome Renee, the test may be expensive but not nearly as expensive as they told you. Who was going to be the test provider in TT? Some local hospital??? Many small nations send their samples abroad because local labs don't really have the expertise yet.

     Your physician (like gyn) can order a test kit from Myriad or from DNA Direct and ship it to the US, there is no need to fly all the way here. But at 26, I think you don't need to rush the test. Even with a mutation, cancers rarely strike so early. And if your mother is the only one in the family to get BC early, then probably there isn't even a mutation behind this?

    Mine was $3000 US as well but then I had them double check a particular gene when I turned up with bc that was another $600.  Something is very wrong with the numbers Renee..  Call the lab directly - you can find them on line under Myriad labs.. It's a simple blood tests and though the gene piece is expensive it shouldn't be that expensive!!!
