Two sports bras work great!
achen2iron- What Ironman did you do? Just curious as I am in Ohio and hoping to try to do one in 2010. I am doing my first sprint triathlon next month.
I started getting planter fasciatis while I was training for this last marathon and freaked. I iced it every night, got new shoes, took advil, and took time off and that seemed to do the trick. Made it through the Flying Pig in Cincinnati last Sunday in 4:11. Third marathon since I finished chemo last October. Yea!
Stay strong AlohaGirl. It took me about 6-7 weeks to be able to get back to running after my lumpectomy last June but then I took off. I did a lot of biking while I was recovering and that seemed to help my body and my mind.

I did Ironman CDA. I'm going over (20 miles) the day after this years race to sign up for next year as it fills fast and they usually let people who are there for the live sign up in. Whichever one you decide on sign up fast. You can go to Ironman.com. to see what's out there close to you. Good luck on your sprint tri. When is it? Congrats on your marathon too. I'm hoping to start running at 8 weeks out from my surgery and may try to work up to a mid Oct. marathon. Definately not going to push it though.

Hey Gals,
I have been living through you all vicariously but have not been posting since
somehow I developed plantar fascitis, which topped off the existing taxol
neuropathy and previous neuroma. Have been going through several treatments
(cortizone shot, cortisone pills, graston technique acupuncture)right now the pain
seems to have shifted to all over my feet and I am inclined to think that Femara is to blame for my foot discomport( it almost seems like tarsal tunnel - foot version of carpal tunnel)
With my oncologists approval I gave myself a Femara break to see whether it is to blame if it is so he might be switching me to arimidex.
So I have not been running at all for at least 4 months and the chiro even told meto lighten up on biking sigh, and I kind of really lightened up on tri training,
not even swimming ! However I had signed up for the Danskin tri and the Florida
half ironman.
So today I had the Danskin tri, I originally was going to just do the swim andbike (had a couple of first timer friends doing the race). But after the bike
thought I would just try to walk it. Well I was able to hold a 50 step walk 50 step
jog.. and finish get my medal yeah !! At the bike I was passing everyone but on the
run I felt like doormat !
Now this got me thinking, next sunday is the florida half ironman I was just goingto do the swim and bike(hoping that I would make the cutoff) .. but when I looked
at the athlete guide I saw that the run was 3 loops.. sooo... are you following my
thoughts? I am thinking what if I just start the run doing the 50 step walk 50 step
jog ... and do you think I could possibly finish the 13.1 after not having run for 4 months and previously the longest run being 6 miles ? I might drop out after the
1st or second loop if I feel like it ? I do not care if I can not run for a long
time after that because I just started rowing crew in an 8 boat.. which I am thinking
about switching into since my feet do not see that happy about hauling the whole
174 pounds and with the heat in Florida I really like greeting the day sunrise on
the water(that is a different story) And one gets a hell of a workout on an 8 boat!
I also am thinking to buy high arch running shoes although I am very much aware
that it is a no-no to wear new shoes to a race. However supporting the arch seems
to be the key to my foot discomfort.
Dang can you say I am confused.. I have the 'after tri-rush' now and might not be thinking logically.
One other factor, my 4 month oncologist appointment is the day after the FL half. I cannot help but think that if something creeps out this might be my last races(I know I know.. this is very negative thinking but cannot help it). I also have the POS ( Pre-oncologist-syndrome).Thoughts .. suggestions. I strategize well on endurance events and my planning and body awareness are my strengths.. planning to get 2 massages this week.
Ohh... one other thing 1 day before the florida half IM I have a regatta 500 meters short but kind of tiring. And I need to check in the bikes at Disney which is a PITA of logistics.
Thoughts insights.. any sisterly advice to this tri-hooked gal ?

Yaaaaa trigeek!
So were you in pain during the last race? Feeling any better without the Femara?
I was reading your last blog entry and it looks like you were swimming and biking up until March right? Did you feel good after the six miles? If so I hope you go for it!
New sneakers did a world of good for my feet but everyone at the local running store I go to kept telling me I should go see a specialist (I also have a lot of pain from a bunyon on my left foot). I also realized that the (worn out) arch in my old shoes was causing a lot of the foot pain. My last seven pairs have been Mizunos and so while I bought my current pair two weeks before a marathon, I knew what I was getting in to and they did fix my foot problems. I think getting a totally different pair of shoes this close to the race that are "high arch" sounds a little scary. Personally, I would want to try those out on a 10 mile run before race day... but that is just me and you could be totally fine.
-
Hey runner ! It was a 3 mile jog in a sprint tri.. and no.. the pain just left after I started running I was expecting to be in excrutiating pain this morning and all I felt was the neuropathy pain no sign of the plantar fasc. I apparently did 13 min/miles which is totally acceptable within my current state.
Went to my chiro for my graston treatment he said that it seems to be gone and he just wants to see me 2 more weeks !!! So it seems like the plantar is under control as of now.
Every day away from Femara I am feeling exponentially better and am dreading the day I will go back on it ( which is next monday) Maybe I can talk my onc into giving me arimidex.
You are so right in April they told me to stop riding my bike to stop aggrevate the pain,,. and I have a bad habit of all or nothing and I also started my crew training. So minimal biking and no swimming since then. And I do not even recall last time I ran but it must be at least a couple of months ago.
The race is this sunday and I was not planning to run at all this week and rely on an extreme taper, get 2 massages, do lots of stretching. Eating within Weight Watchers points to shed off 2 pounds not more.. Hydrating well, and planning a solid nutrition plan for the race ( it will be very hot close to 95+)
The closest I got to 10 miles of running was last year.
Somehow I feel like if I can finish this race I would have beaten c. But on the other hand I know that this might sound like self destructive act.. going into it without proper training. If I can do it I know that I have reclaimed my body.
Maybe I need shrink appointment and not a half ironman.
-
The crew training is an awesome workout. I added a rowing machine to my workout when I started following a triathon training program in April and it kicks my butt. You are in great shape. I suspect that Sunday is going to be a great race for you and if it isn't and you need to slow down or stop, that is OK too. It is about being healthy right? So healthy that the cancer can't come back:)
I will be doing the Columbus Race for the Cure this Saturday. I was going to walk it with my family but then husband told me he thought I should just go and sprint the whole thing. Maybe win my age group? I don't just want to beat cancer, I want to put it under the heal of my running shoe and grind it into the ground. I totally hear you about wanting to reclaim my body, my mind and my life.
But... I wouldn't be doing all this racing and training and general healthy living if I had not gone through BC last summer. It continues to give me a greater apprecation for living life to the fullest.
-
Hey Runner how did the race go ?
Cant believe that it has been 6 months since I posted this thread and I have been injured for almost 5 months..
The regatta was hilarious but we made it from finish to start.. lol.
I went to the Florida Half Ironman today thinking that I'd only do the swim and the bike at best and ended up actually completing it. Yes I walked almost all the way, yes I was really slow probably one of the last ones in my age group.. but I completed it ! My feet are killing me but it was worth it ! Blisters all over and plantar is rearing its head again. 8:20 hrs of heat of slugging.. urghh.. really got to me.
I cannot say that I am back to where I was 1.5 years ago.. but I think I am getting there slowly. My recovery is slower and I seem to be prone to injury a lot more.
Tomorrow I have my 4 month oncologist appointment hopefuly slugging in the 90+ degree hot weather will not mess the results due to dehydration.
I took a 2 week femara vacation.. now probably will be back on it tomorrow.
I literally cried this morning at the start of the swim.. I had thought I would never be in an IM event again in my life !
-
GOOD JOB TODAY TRIGEEK. WAY TO GO!!!!!
-
Congratulations Trigeek! You go girl!
-
Thanks ladies, I am yet to take off my race bracelet lol.. I am wayyy to much attached. They are asking me 'when is your next race' I am answering not anytime soon.. will just simmer and enjoy the feeling of finding something that I thought I had lost for good. !
-
That is really a great post Trigeek! I am so happy for you!
I ended up walking Race for the Cure with my two year old on my back and my husband at my side.
I am one month from my first Triathlon. I took a swimming lesson yesterday and am taking an open water swim class next week. Swimming is my weakest sport and it makes me nervous but I'm still excited for a new challenge.
-
Thanks Runner ! Congrats on doing the event with family I know that the events that I share with them have a different meaning, especially for one symbolic as Race for the Cure !
It is all about challenging ourselves and experiencing something new ! That way we can squeeze in a lot more life in our lives ( am I making sense lol.. )
Following is the video from our regatta ( don't you just love Lori ??) where we were in the team for Women Playing for TIME.

5 weeks post tram and I'm back on the bike this week and running next week (although I've been "practicing" running this week
) Yipee!
-
OMG achen.. are you even allowed on the bike soon ?? wow.. you are another driven gal..
-
He said i could bike, but he may be thinking around the block with my daughter biking. So I figure I'll meet him half way and stay off any large climbing routes so I';m not using my abs as much and I'll just go fast on the flats.Have you recovered from your 1/2 yet.
-
Haha I hear you achen.. when I was in chemo I used to ask my oncologist .. how much exactly can I bike, he said 'do what you can do' and then when he heard I pulled a 50 miler and I was wiped out he was not a happy camper
. They really do not know.. so I had to learn to pace myself.
I did the half soo slow it was more like a long shopping day on Black Friday. The blisters have finally healed ! I would suggest wearing a heart rate monitor cause the main concern would be internal bleeding hindering the healing process.. keep it sweet and easy around zone 1-2, do not go up to 3 ..
My 2 cents.
-
That's what I have decided to do, just live by the heart rate monitor and stay in 1 or 2. I'm still waiting for my oncotype test to see if I need chemo but I was thinking if I do and I still do the heart rate thing I am going to try to exercise throughout,. I figure if I keep a good base it will be alot easier to ramp up later. I'm volunteering for Ironman CDA June 21st and plan on signing up for next year on the 22nd, I guess volunteers get to sign up 1 hour before everyone else.
, I guess I'll have to check with my onc if I do start chemo about the volunteering thing. How;s the rowing going? Anymore races on the calendar?
-
Achen that sounds like a good plan, and yes I am a strong advocate of keeping active while doing chemo ( hopefully you will not but if you do it is not the end of the world, it sucks but I tried having fun with it with 6 wigs and chasing people who tried to avoid me in supermarket aisles .. lol.. )
Lets say if I was active 8/20 prior to bc I kept my activity at 4/10.. toned it down at least 50% and no intensity.
Not sure whether you saw my blog but I have a list of my workouts after surgery..
Since I was off from work all my life was chemo/recover/workout/recover ... so it was pretty simple. I lived by my heart rate monitor definitely and avoided strength training until I knew how my body was handling all the poison.. after all the body has a fixed amount of repair work it can do and since it was dealing with the damage from chemo I made a point to never overexert myself.. but I did work up to a 9 mile jog/walk preparing for the BC half marathon. My theory is the chemo gets into every single cell of my body by keeping the lymphs/blood pumping and then is rinsed out asap too.
Good for volunteering my favorite is to volunteer in the changing tent of an IM .. ohh the drama, the different rituals people have.. some cry, some laugh some kiss a picture, some read a poem.. Even if you do chemo you still will be able to volunteer somewhere for sure ! Taking care of not coming into contact with any body fluid ( like the tent would be a no no for you IMHO) but you probably could work at registration... or any kind of seated work.. or some other light chore.
Keeping in the tri-scene was a sanity saver for me during chemo I took the time to contaminate ehemm..rub off the tri bug to my friends.. not they are all trigeeks !!!
Thanks for asking about rowing I went into the novice boat and on the 2nd session the coach wanted me to participate in the upcoming Sunshine States regatta in the womens' 4 woohooo on the 14th!!! so I also signed up for the single 1X.. wth.. I am not passing any opportunity that comes my way as I stated in the video..

Hi all - Havent been here in a while...Feeling good and staying busy.
Ran a 3.1 on Saturday 27:50 - under 9 min mile and it want a flat course (2 small hills). Better than my last PR (pre and post bc and treatment) from 3 weeks ago 28:30 - wow! The next day I ran a 9 mile flat run with my hubby!
I am signed up for a half in October and just signed up for my very first tri - sprint in Sept. I barely even ride a bike and havent swam a lap in about 20 years! This should be fun. (the swim is only a 1/4 mile and I have ridden my daughters bike on bike paths for up to 10 miles!)
Any advise, tri geek?
-
Ladies!!!!
I am soooooooo excited to have found these posts....yessss you guys have given me hope!!!
I am also a marathon runner and triathlete....having a lumpectomy tomorrow and not sure what kind of treatment I will need after, waiting on the final path report ofcourse. I have been freaking out about my running, swimming, biking not knowing how long I will not be able to do this..I guess I am just a bundle of nerves at the moment.
I did a tri this weekend and I swam, ran and biked like a mad woman ;-)...planning to do the Miami Half Ironman this year if this HUGE INCONVENIENCE allows me.
Thank you , thank you for all your wonderful posts...You ladies ROCK
Alicia
-
Alicia so sorry that you had to find your way to us but you are in good hands lol... will hope that lump will be 'it' for you and we all will be a distant/pleasant memory for you.
Everyminute you are one phast chickie did anyone tell you that !!! doing a PR after bc treatment now I am feeling pretty bad, let me go to my corner and lick my wounded ego.. hehe...
You are exactly where you need to be for your first tri... no need to exaggerate, if you can float... balance on your bike and walk and if you can shop nonstop on a Black friday, and most importantly if you are excited about your first tri you will just be fine !! Focus on the logistics of the event, the transition, course read some tips online, talk to tri'ers(we can talk if you want to pm me) .. what to wear so you'll be chic in your race pictures ( make sure no one is in front of you at the finish as that is the photo op ! drop back or move up ) Which race did you sign up for ?
-
Thanks Trigeek!
It is a Trek sprint tri down in NYC on Sept 13 (I think I even get to register free as a female cancer survivor via Team Survivor!)
So I am going to go to the pool and get started - that is my weakest area. I figure I have to be able to do 8 laps (up and back) for a 1/4 mile swim. I will start with one or two and work from there. Be good cross training, I would think. I definately need some new gear :-)
Thanks for your support - I wil keep you posted!
-
hey ! I am doing the Orlando Trek on september !!! You better email them fast cause they have limited number of free entries .. if they say no do not be embarrassed to push back and get your free entry. There will be a lot of meetings beforehand I strongly suggest that you attend them all. And 1 day before the race there will be a first timers clinic most probably along with a race course meeting.. you will be good to go !
The original Danskin crowd is putting it together Maggie Sullivan, Sally Edwards since the Danskin became Sherox. There will be an awesome survivors breakfast .. and hopefully a nice goodie bag for us survivor gals.
-
I just started looking into it (I actaully started my own team survivor affiliate here in Albany NY) and did email Cathy about the free entry (but will pay if I have to) My friend is doing it with me - she is not a bc survivor.
It is in NYC - 2 hours from here - not sure I will make any of the pre meetings but I will try (tri!) I may have to just wing it - gulp.
I also signed up for a half marathon in october and my boss is pushing me to do boston. Pre bc I got up to about 8 miles but usually more like 3-5 miles - about 15-20 miles per week so this is all new.
-
Just did my first triathlon on Saturday. I came in 38th out of 396. I loved it!
-
38th out of 396 omg... you are an animal what can I say ! What an accomplishment !!!
Your first tri ???? really ???
Now I am feelig like a doormat hehe..
-
Hi -
I too am sick of this crap and I am hoping that someone on this blog will be able to tell me what happens when you stop taking the Aromatase Inhibitors. Does the joint pain, the trigger fingers, the plantar fascia pain, the hot flashes and the difficulty in losing weight go away? Is there really light at the end of the tunnel or is that a freight train I see.
-
Just checking into see how everyone is doing.
I finished three triathlons this summer. It seems that the longer the distance, the worse I do. While I can swim for miles, I am s-l-o-w and plan to work with a coach this winter to help that. Would love to hear any swimming suggestions from those of you who do this regularly. I am hoping to do an Ironman next fall.
For now, I am back in marathon training mode and my quest to qualify for Boston this fall at the Columbus marathon. Lots of hard painful workouts- I need inspiration.
-
Hey Runner,
Good job this summer. Which Ironman are you going to do? I am signed up for CDA next June and am doing a 1/2 iron next weekend. Not a fast swimmer myself but really don't mind being toward the back of the pack on the swim anyway. More room in the water and at transition and it's more fun passing people all day rather than being passed.
When is your marathon? Hope you make Boston.
Keep up the good work!
-
Life does go on! Completed 1/2 iron this weekend 5 months to the day almost from my surgery. Tough race, but I was glad to be out there doing it. Bring it on!!!
