    By the way, I saw my PCP today, and her parting words to me -- which I wanted to share with all of you -- were, "Keep exercising!  There's no such thing as too much exercise for you now."      Deanna

    Hello Everybody and thanks for all the birthday wishes!  We still have not had time to officially celebrate...so the weekend is looking good! LOL

    Mumayan...great news!!!!

    Deanna...I love what your PCP said...she is so right!!!!!!!!!!  It's sad, some of the responses we are getting to Team Survivor from the local doctors...one comment we heard "We don't really like to talk about exercise with our cancer patients..."  I just about fell over!

    We really need to be our own advocates......  I'm convinced that if there was a way for the pharmaceutical companies to patent exercise...we would hear a lot more about it at the doctor's office!

    Late Bday wishes queen Lisa- I am sure you Zumbaed through it. I am off to the gym have to make up for last week. We leave on a cruise in 2 weeks so need to get my energy level up pronto.

    Hi all!  

    Deanna-thanks for sharing what your PCP said!  I sent that to my hubby!

    Found out on Tuesday that my onc ran the Boston marathon, and exercises at the gym that another patient of hers goes to.  That's awesome!  at least she's practicing what she preaches!

    See the PT at noon for an update on my rotated pelvis.  Hadn't been walking per his instructions (except Hawaii) did his exercises, and my low back/hip still hurt and I gained 2 lbs!  So hubby and I went for a walk last night.  It was beautiful out.  But heating up today and over 100 for the weekend.  (Deanna, how do you handle the heat??)

    mumayan - a cruise!  how exciting, where to??  I've never been on one, but would like to one day.

    A huge box of bagels was just delivered....people want our business!!  

    I was called this morning by Massage Envy (my coworkers for xmas bought me 6 - 1 hour massages!!)...the gal asked if they could do a luminaria bag in my name for the Lincoln Relay for Life this weekend.  I was sooooo touched!  I will be there in the .am. for the survivor's lap and after a party tomorrow night at my boss' house will head over to the High School for the Luminaria Ceremony!  And I get a free 30 minute upgrade on my next massage!  WOW, I am a lucky girl!!  So touched and thankful too.

    Hi Kari, miss flower!

    I am here. I have been getting up early and walking. Today I am at 9K+ steps already and the day is not yet over!  I like the "getting it over with" part. Otherwise, I am like nervous or preoccupied all day, wondering, will I get to do my exercise? Will work blow up or will I get too tired, etc. 

    Deanna, aiming for 18.5 miles this week! Plus my "Warrior Woman" Yoga class. You are my inspiration on the "miles"! And yes, your onc is great! There is no such thing as too much exercise for us now!!

    Hi Springie!  Glad to see you today!  You and Deanna - AWESOME on the mileage, you must need a new pair of tennies every month, LOL!

    I hear ya about the getting up early and getting it over with cause I too get anxious as the day goes trying to fit it in.  

    Saw my PT today for a follow up on the low back/hip issue.  I have made some progess in strengthening the hip area but right side is still weak (from all the sitting and lying around during treatment - amazing how the body falls apart when exercise isn't part of the routine, which it always had been for me)...he did a lot of testing and gave me "new" exercises and said "no other exercises except these and stroll walking, no pushing it and take short steps"...My hubby went with me and we both left like guilty teens...didn't mention all the walking, beach walking, yoga, pilates...So another appt. in 2 wks to be re-checked.  I will be a good girl for now.

    Zumba last night plus I worked from 10 am until 4 pm painting the cement around our pool...it turned out really cool.  Then zumba this morning....and now I'm off to teach my health/wellness presentation!

    Lisa, you are the energizer bunny!!!  Wish I had your energy!

    Just back from the Lincoln Relay for Life Opening ceremony and survivor's lap.  Hubby and I cried like babies the whole time, so emotional!!!!!  The tough part is seeing the little ones with survivor t-shirts on, but again so happy to see that they have survivor t-shirts on.  Its not yet 10am and 93 degrees out, yikes! 

    Ditto the Make it a great day sentiment!

     I did not expect this but I walked to the center of town and discovered that it is a bit over a mile from my house, not the 1/2 mile I thought it was. So I clocked 2.3 miles on my pedometer only 3 days after chemo.  Now, of course, I need to rest but it is a beginning!

    Congrats Kari on the Relay for Life !

    Didn't follow PT's instructions, uh oh...went for a 40 min bike ride this a.m. to the High school for the closing ceremonies but got there too late, bummer!!  Man, its hot out!!  reaching record temps today over 100...look out east coast cause you know you always get our systems.  Keep cool and keep on truckin!

    Kari-I know how you feel. I took a 10 mile bike ride 5 days after surgery.  I just wanted to feel normal again! My doctors were telling me to be good to myself and take it easy. Well, being good to myself is getting healthy again. It felt great! Following doctors orders can sometimes be the worst thing to do! They continue to treat us all the same, when we are all different, and able to handle different things. I only took one pain pill after surgery, layed around for one day, and I was over it. I needed to get back back on the bike!

    By the way, CA girls. I just ordered a new bike from CA. I finally wore out my one speed and I am moving up to a 3 speed. Don't laugh! I consider my bike a workout machine. I have a great forest preserve to ride it. I am not into distance. An hour on a bike is more of a workout on a one speed. But my husband was embarassed to be seen with me, so I am moving up in the world. I searched every bike shop in my area, and none of them sold comfortable workhorse bikes. They sell all kinds of mountain bikes, and there are no mountains here! Illinois doesn't even have a lot of hills for that matter! So I had to go to a mountainous state to buy a bike for flatlanders. Go figure! I can't wait to get my new bike!!!

    Mandy ~  I am so impressed that you are out there walking already!  Good for you!  It took me weeks after chemo & rads to get my mind & body in gear again, so I know it's not easy.

    vivre ~  That's exciting that you ordered a new bike, but I can't believe you couldn't find one closer than CA.  It must be something special!

    I've had my best week to date for walking!  27.01 miles!  That includes only the steps/miles I do on my early morning walks.  I don't wear my pedometer for the rest of the day, although some people do and count those steps as well.  I did wear my pedometer on Saturday this week -- the only day I didn't walk -- just out of curiosity.  It was a very busy running around day for me, and I did a total of 5754 steps, which are not included in my 27 mile total.  My goal for next week was going to be to try to walk a combined distance equal to a marathon (approx. 26 miles), but I absolutely shocked  myself by already doing that this week.  Now, with the heat and the time it takes, I don't think I'll try to better that -- just try to keep it around there.      Deanna

    I'm so jealous of you guys complaining of the heat.  It's been far to frigid here lately.  Turned up the furnace this morning.  I have a very very hard time being motivated to do anything when it stays this cold and warm weather goes away in May.

    Deanna, Holy Cow!!! You are the Walking Woman! We only did 15 this week as I gardened yesterday vs. walking. You are amazing!

    Vivre, your area sounds so beautiful!!  And a CA bike, RIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!  my thighs were burning yesterday, they are so out of shape!  

    Got out yesterday in the record heat over 102! that didn't feel very good I have to say...hard to feel like movin and truckin with you tongue hanging out and your butt draggin, haha!  So after shopping and meeting my DD and her fiance for lunch, watched 2 movies at home.  One was a dance movie and Lisa, I thought of you, cause I was dancing all over my kitchen (I was making a salad at the time) and laughing (ok I was alone) and felt SO normal!!  I love to move!!

    Deanna, Holy cow, you can WALK woman!!  That's inspiring and Spring, don't say 'only'...15 is a lot too!!  Good for you girls!

    kmmd, where do you live?  I can't imagine turning the furnace on right now!  It was 85 in my bedroom last night...HOT!  I just didn't want to give in to the Air conditioning, I hate it!  I have to wear my sweater all summer long at work and carry it to go in places...my hubby just laughs.

    kmmd ~  I was wondering the same thing; where are you?  I think we often think "the grass is greener," but if you had just walked for an hour and a half with me in our 97 degree heat (@ 9:00 a.m.! -- and more humidity than we usually have here), you might think otherwise!  I am literally sitting here dripping sweat.  I'm going to have to try to do what Spring does and get out there @ dark thirty or quarter to dawn or whenever it's light enough to be safe.  Or maybe I'll have to look for somewhere indoors (the mall?) to log my miles, cause this heat is almost too much.   Deanna

    Hi All,

    I am with Vivre on this one, we didn't actually turn on the furnace but did wake up to a skiff of snow this morning! Yesterday was about 20, not sure what it is today but it is dreary, wet and cold. Tomorrow apparently it will be double digits again (celcius of course).

    Congrats to all who are still doing their walking despite the heat. Deanna, in winter here, we mall walk because it is too cold and slippery. There are actually group sign ups. People are in the mall at 8 am, do there walking for however long, then sit and coffee together. I will do this on occasion too as one of our clinics is in a mall. During summer, the boss and I walk around the outside of the mall, we can do it in 15 min if we push it. It is not a lot but it sure helps with the mental aspect, fresh air = new perspective.

    We have not been able to turn off he heat yet, but I think the warm air will finally be here tomorrow! Maybe I can even put on some shorts. I need to sweat! It is great for detox, so all you southern and Ca girls have been getting your share of that. Hopefully the rest of us can join you soon. But after about a week of summer, I am usually sick of it. I hate hot weather, but I do love those garden fresh tomoatoes. I hope I can get my garden in soon! The ground is still to wet to do anything!

    We broke a record last night...went down to 30 degrees!  The furnace is still on here too!  Heading back down to the 40's tonight!  I'm so over this cold weather!!!!!!!

     Just got home from Zumba...I want to go out and shovel mulch...but need to work on new routines for the tomorrow! 

    I can't wait to get my garden planted...

    Send some of that heat our ways girls!

    Lisa, I can just picture you incorporating shoveling mulch into some new Zumba dance moves!!  LOL! 

    Bet you girls can't wait to get your gardens going...we have some crooknecks that look ready now!  Sure grow fast once they get going.  Yikes, you girls have been chilly and some still with snow!

    OK, the Zumba and mulch combination had me splitting my stitches here.  Me too, hopeful that tomorrow will be warmer and that weather forecaster earns his money

    Okay, resident couch-potato jumping in here.  Read some of the posts, got up and plugged in Sansone DVD and did a 2-mile workout.  Now I'm back on the couch. 

    Finished rads today (YAY!) and just need to make myself get into a daily exercise routine.  Have a gym membership but I really only like to do aqua classes so I want to let my skin heal from rads before I start up in chlorine again.  I do have a treadmill and the dvd's so there's no reason aside from being lazy. 

    I know many of you, my supportive sisters, may say that it's not lazy because of the BC but I've been blessed that it's been a relatively easy journey for me so I can't play that card.  Guess I just want to join on here as a way of trying to have some accountability.  

    I do have hip issues, predating BC and now I'm on Arimidex.  I turned 60 in January; have never been able to run although I would love to, if only for a couple of miles!

    Good to see we have some new gals getting off the couch and taking action. Spring fever! Just keep it up and you will be steps ahead in healing. Patoo, keep walking during rads. It will eliminate the fatigue factor. It worked for me. The radiologists kept telling me that the fatigue was going to hit and it never did. Then they admitted that there were studies that seem to show the benefits of exercise during rads. They are using me as their poster child.

    PK-So what do you think about your Canadian gal taking on all those hot American guys on the Bachelor?LOL!

    Hint for the day: Use a pitchfork for moving mulch. It works a lot better than a shovel-and it is a cuter dance partner. Think "American Gothic".

    Great idea...I can really come up with a fun routine with a shovel and zumba! LOL 

    No pitchfork for me...won't work very well taking the mulch off the pick up truck ......my red shovel is my tool of choice!

    OMG Lisa, I just sang the song "little red corvette" in my head but substituted "little red shovel", you could play that song in Zumba and do a cute routine!  LOL!  I know I'm weird...

    Vivre-I recorded The Bachelorette, can't wait to check out the hot guys!  heehee

    Our heat wave finally broke last night - got out and walked although it did bother my hip so I better be careful.  This wonderful breeze had picked up and I really enjoyed it!  Tonight have a nice massage after work!  I can't wait!!

    Walked again in the early morning and it was good. Took a different route today, that was interesting! Then I weeded an area in the front before comiing in. All this before work, cracks me up how much you can do before 9AM!!! I am over 7K steps so far for the day, not too bad so far. 

    Back to work. 

    Welcome newbies! Did you know that it is written that if a woman who was previously diagnosed with breast cancer walks 30 minutes a day, 6x a week, she can cut her rate of reoccurrance by 50%?  (In case you didn't know!) This is what motivates me! (This is from "Anti-Cancer, A New Way of Life" book)

    Kari..I love it!  I'll have to try that tomorrow when I'm throwing the rest of my mulch! LOL

     Been doing Zumba since 8 am this morning...working on a new routine.  Now taking a break before I have to go teach it tonight at 6:30!  Think I'll go out and play in my gardens!  The sun is shining!!!!!!!!!

    Spring - thanks for that motivation tidbit.  Came home from work and got right on the treadmill for 40 mins.  Startef feeling it in my hip so will try to increase a little each day.  May try and add even a few minutes in the morning.  I'm gonna do this friends, thanks.

    I went to my second yoga class and am on track for twice a week. It feels really good and I am excited that I can do it. The mulching discussion reminds me that I have wanted to turn some of the (small, city) backyard into a veggie garden! :)
