I posted prior to this, I have been having some shoulder pain recently, it started to move into my arm and then my underarm and breast area.  I found 2 lumps in the breast (opposite breast of lumpectomy), so I went to the surgeon.  The surgeon felt the lump before, said it's a change and sent me for an US.  The technician felt the lump as well, but coldn't find anything on the US, she checked very thoroughly, but didn't see anything.  She told me that if the US couldn't find anything, I had nothing to worry about.  My question is, if we all feel a lump, but it doesn't show up on the US, what do I have?  The lump is not very big, but it is palpable, kind of hard feeling and odd shaped.  The other lump feels the same, but the surgeon wasn't sure he felt another lump.

I asked the surgeon about doing an MRI, he won't do it because he says it comes back with too many false positives.  I did a mammi in Jan/09 and it was clear, my markers are also clear, is it possible it's something, but all the tests are showing nothing?

I am really going crazy, please can someone shed some light.

    Shelly,  you US tech is wrong!  I'm not suggesting it is cancer but you might need an MRI to rule out anything and if it shows an area of concern you know the drill from there..  The amount of MRI's are reducing because doc's figured out that they really didn't have good answers when they get an area of concern, but you and your doc feel a lump.. if it doesn't show on a mammo and US it could still show on an MRI.  I had a negative mammo, digital mammo, US and then an MRI all the tests BUT the MRI were negative.. turned out to be DCIS.. Good luck and I hope all you tests are negative.. but I wouldn't stop at a US...  Best!!!

    Shelley, please get an MRI.  I had a negative mammo, found a lump, then had a technician who was unable to find anything using US.  Hopefully it is nothing - but for your peace of mind, an MRI will be much more conclusive.

    Thank you all for responding and caring, I have heard so many stories of lumps not being found on mammo/US, but then someone on this site told me that it is rare that the US doesn't pick it up.  I will push for the MRI or biopsy or PET.

    Shelloz go for the biopsy you can not take a chance and you deserve to be in peace. God luck...

    Shelloz1:  I'm really glad your are going to "push" for the MRI and/or biopsy and because you have invasive cancer (Stage 1) I think a PET scan is warranted to as long as you haven't recently had one!  They (PET scans) are so expensive that you won't get anyone to agree unless you have never had one before or if it has been several years since you had one.. but again - I will be thinking about you and hoping that everything is fine!!!  Best!

    Shelloz1-I am kind of where you are. And I insisted on more. Palpable lump, didn't show on mammo, but tech could feel it and marked it, was sent for ultrasound, again tech could feel it couldn't see it, radiologist came in to try, said it "could" be an adneoma, don't worry about it, rescan in 5 years. ?? Huh? So I waited and went back to my family doctor who felt it for the first time ( when I found it I just called and was sent for mammo since I was due for my baseline anyway) she agreed that it needed biopsied. Was sent to BS, he did an ultrasound and found thickening, so I go next week for an excisional biopsy. Hope you are able to get something more done to determine what the lumps are and get some peace of mind.

    I got back my official US results, and as I suspected it shows that they couldn't find the lump.  I do have a question though.  I have been having discomfort between my underarm and breast (side of lumpectomy), thought I felt a lump there as well.  Previsouly the US came back as Birad 1 and this time Birad 2, why would the Birad rate change?

    It looks like BIRADS 1 means they didn't find any lesions to comment on.  BIRADS 2 is also normal, but they found something that, although also normal, deserves comment (like a cyst).
