Question re: after chemo
Hello everyone,
I am almost 4 years out from diagnosis. I had a 1.7cm tumor, triple neg bc, nodes unknown. I did 6 rounds of TAC. After chemo, I have been fine ever since. I was 41 at diagnosis. Chemo put me into menopause for 3.5 years, but earlier this year, all my menopause symptoms stopped and then I got a very light period. Here's my question. Has this happened to anyone else AND if it did, did your doctor recommend having your ovaries removed? Mine has. I can't believer it because I had triple neg bc. She said the risk is that I would get a new primary that is hormone sensitive. I am really torn because I feel sooooooo much better with my hormones. I never knew what a difference it makes. My hot flashes are gone and I can sleep all the way through the night.
Thanks, just trying to make sure my onc isn't overreacting.
Thanks, Shannon

Shannon-NoSurrender had a new primary after 5 years. You might ask her about it. She was tn the first time.

Hi Shannon,
I was 41 at dx too and also TN! I've had all of 3 periods since 2006.... about 10 months apart. I keep asking my onc if I'm going through menopause and he says since I'm TN it doesn't matter. I've also asked my GP if I could get the menopause blood test just to see where I was and he also said since I'm TN it doesn't matter if I'm in menopause or not. I would like to know if I'm close or not though because when I do have them, they are doozies. I had Hot Flashes before DX, but nothing now, which is nice!

Hi Shannon,
What a quandary. I am triple neg as well, dx'd at age 39; had mastectomy of the affected breast (5cm tumor and 1cm tumor and three positive nodes) then had 4 DD A/C, followed by 4 DD Taxol and finally 33 rads. I went on to have a prophylactic mastectomy of my "good" breast about a year after diagnosis (this was recommended by genetic counselor and approved heartily by bs and onc).
My onc and bs never recommended that I have my ovaries removed, but the genetic counselor did. I felt that by removing the breasts I was somewhat safe, but who knows.
Oh, BTW, my period returned six months after I had completed chemo and my onc was not worried its return at all.
I agree that you can get a new primary that is ER/PR+, and as Brenda mentioned, Gina (No Surrender) did.
Good luck in finding some answers out there.
