Risk Factors R US

I was curious: I have heard the lifestyle risk factors for ILC are early menses in life, ages 10-11; no childbearing/breastfeeding; and drinks wine/alchol recreationally. I fall into all three of these. What about everyone else?

Thanks,

Cathleen

Got my period at 14 (and then didn't really have another one for several months), I had two children, both of whom I breastfed, and I only have about three drinks a YEAR. I did have my kids late - at age 31 and 33 - but on paper, I had about a 1% chance of developing breast cancer. It wasn't on my radar. I have one great-aunt (out of a LOT of female relatives) who was diagnosed at age 75. I have new suspicions daily: I took BCP's for a looooooooong time, from a fairly young age. Allegedly, there's no connection there.

I heard of three but can only remember 2 right now:

    1 - never having given birth to a child;  2 - ERT;  3 - ???

The 3rd wasn't alcohol nor early menses nor breastfeeding.  If it comes back to me I will repost.

I started periods at age 13, had two children that I nursed for 1 year each but I do drink an occassionaly beer on weekends.

From this site: "Risk factors you can't control"  Age, Personal History, Family History, Breast Changes, BRCA gene alterations, Breast Density, Late Childbearing or No Children, Chest Radiation Before Age 30, Being White and Over 40, DES Exposure, and Menstrual History (onset prior to age 12 or menopause after age 55).

There are also information items on risk factors you can control...

None of these apply to me.  I occasionally drink, but too infrequently to count.

When I was carrying my son at age 34, the theory was that if you had a child before age 35, you didn't have an increased risk of bc. Now, for some reason (or not!), they have lowered that to age 30.

My mother was around 40 when I was born, and to her disappointment she couldn't breast feed for some reason, which has been suggested as a risk factor. I breast fed for the six months the pediatrician recommended.

My mother drank no more than I do, and she never mentioned having early periods, but she did have bc at 45, which she survived. Since there is no family history of bc, the only risk factor we share is giving birth at over age 30.  My mother's half sister had no children, never had cancer of any kind, and died at 89 of complications of diabetes.

Started periods at age 11.  For a long time I thought that was only bad because it made me different from my friends. Now I know better. I had my first child at 22, gave birth to three more, and breasfed all four for a year or so. Very little family history and I know now I don't have a BRCA mutation. I've never been a big drinker, but there were probably periods of my life where I drank one glass of wine a day on average. I'm also guilty of being over 40.  Laughing  I think I remember from somewhere that's the biggest risk factor...aging.  Not much we can do about that one.

    These are just guessing.....

Anyway I had kids at 32, no breastnursing, but I know people who had child at 30's, no breastfeeding but they didn't get BC like me. :(

I think my risk factors were that I used HRT and I also drank wine.  There are probably additional environmental/food-type factors, too, though I don't know what they are.  I had one child at age 24, breast fed, started my periods at age 13. I got regular mammos, too.
