Hi and Happy Monday to all!  Today will be just #4 for me and I'm already feeling fatigued.  I slept a lot on the weekend and am at work and very tired this morning.  Seems weird to have this SE already and I really hate being tired all the time.  Grrr....

    Have a great Monday.

Hi gals.  I'm posting late today and feel very out of touch with you all!  I've been crazy busy at work and just now getting to take a moment.  As for the nausea and light headedness, I've had both for the past several days.  Yesterday I really noticed the dizzyness when I laid down.  I was thinking I wasn't eating enough when taking my vitamins but it seems I'm not the only one with this issue.  Jeanne, thank you for the info on esophagitis.  I am going to look it up.  Of course, my rads onc doesn't think the nausea has anything to do with rads but I think there are enough testimonies here to dispute that!  The nausea really seems to bother me after I've eaten a meal.  Anyone else?

This is my 6th week... yeah!!  Only 8 to go.  No skin problems or blisters yet, I feel very lucky.  My fatigue isn't bad either.  I'm really tired at the end of the day but nothing drastic.

Bette - I'm so sorry you had to go to the ER.  I hope you're feeling ok now.

Starting to feel a little more tired, but have been extremely busy with life in general. But on the whole, I seem to be doing very well. Skin is just a little pink so far.

Lainey, Jeanne, Bette  hope you guys are all doing better...thinking of you....

When did it get to be dinner time...yikes...better go get something cooked or the kids will waste away to nothing lol    At the very least I'll hear I'm starving....

Hope you ladies have a good evening...

You know, I wonder if it's a result of scattering.  It's pretty common that you can get esophagitis(sp) or inflamation o the through and esophagus from scattering.  I wonder if a nausea reflex could also result from something like that.  Of course it's hard to get an answer from your rad onc when their first response is "I don't know what that's from..."

Ahm...hello, you're the one with the degree and the studies and the equipment...

I also wonder if symptoms like this are somehow chemo related.  Even though the chemo has left our systems our system is still recovering in different ways and cycles...along the lines of how eyebrows and lashes will take time before they fall out of synch again...or ovaries take time to bounce back(if they do).  Maybe there's something going on with your stomach linings in terms of the healing process from chemo that's triggering something...especially since some of you seem to be having it at roughly the same time.  I don't know, just tossing out some ideas.  I hope it passes.  If any of you get an answer form your onc, yeah, pass it along.

Rachel- Great list, thank you for sharing it with all of us.

Shan1171- make sure you apply for FMLA with your HR dept.  If your company has over 50 employees you can take up to 12 weeks off (without pay or go on Short Term Disability) or go intermittent FLMA over a 12 month period.  Take the time you need to heal.   Good Luck.

Susan... (RE: nausea) "I don't know what that's from" is totally crap! So many patients feel this way during and after radiation.,.. I can't even believe he would say that to you.  Sorry, but that really upsets me!

    11 down..........

Alright, I'm claiming a seat next you, susan.  It didn't hit me until I got home........serving of light headed topped with nausea.......just lovely.  I utilized my collection of left-over chemo drugs, the Zophran seemed to do the trick.

For me I think it's a cocktail of:  cell destruction, stress, and an eleven month old.  HA!  I actually took a two hour nap with him today, which is why I'm still awake at this hour of night/morning.  Oh, well.

I'm trying to not allow the stress to get me, but it's hard when it LIVES with you (stress - AKA grandmother and aunt).  My aunt had a stroke a couple of years ago and my 88 year old (and should be sainted) grandmother takes care of her.  I asked them to come stay with me, hoping it would help my grandmother out.  Did I mention I deserve some sort of halo, doesn't have to be fancy or anything........HA!  It's about to get me, though.  The house is not very big and my aunts' green fog of a "f you, I'm taking my mind-numbing drugs content to rest on my laurels"attitude.......with a side of bitch, bitch, self-pity, moan, moan is bringing me d o w n.

Gotta get some sleep ladies......do it all again tomorrow.

Shan--Wow, that is tough.  Yeah, you deserve a halo...a huge diamond filled, pulsating with light halo that drowns out everything else around you.

    Hey ladies,

Well I'l ask my med. onc. Thursday, he'll give me the answers to the nauseau, I'll also ask him why the rad onc. don't want to take the blame!?!?!  I guess I'll have to take out my Zofran too..... $%#^^@ thought we were done with taking that sh*t!!!  But guess not to suffer we should take what we need to.   I was nauseas ALL day yesterday until I went to sleep.  Was ok this morning and during treatment at 10, but now I'm starting to feel it again.  My throat is also scratchy but I'm wondering if it's just allergies, tis the season.

11 down 14 more to go. Is it June yet?!?!?

    Hi, ladies -

Rads resumed yesterday after five days off - told they will add five days plus an additional two days for extra boosts - skin healed wonderfully.

Ironically, however, they called me this morning to tell me the machine broke down and won't be fixed until tonight! (they close at 3pm) - so another day missed - my last day will now be 5/27!

Anyone else have delays due to equipment breakdown?

I am soooo sorry to hear that some of you are having nausea and feeling cruddy, while others are getting open sores on your tender skin. We all just have to keep in mind that it will be over with SOON! Stay positive and focus on the fact that it won't last forever. I found out yesterday that I have done 11 treatments...and have 22 more treatments remaining. ARRRGGGHHH!!  I'm trying not to think about it....this chapter of my life will soon be closed.

Big Big Gentle hugs to all of you!!!

Britt- I am a day behind due to machine malfunction. My last day is now May 22nd.

Tomorrow I have a CT scheduled to measure for the boosts.

I do see an end in sight.

I also have been having problems with swallowing but was told by my rad dr. that it was not from the rads but maybe from the chemo.

I figure while I have an appt. with the gastro. dr. for a colonscopy I might as well have her check out the other end if I'm still having problems.

    Happy Tuesday.

    Hi all,

I have a 3-day delay (ending now 5/18) because of machine malfunction in my first week!  But the good news is I have my boost markings and they start Thrusday for total of 8 boosts.

Yes, there is light at the end and it gets brighter and brighter each day!  YAY!!!

    Hi Patoo -

I got my boost markings yesterday - along with x-rays and remeasurements (since I had a 5 day radiation vacation) and my boosts will begin next Tuesday . . . . yes, the end is definitely on the horizon!  But I do not regret taking those five days off, since my skin really healed, and my rads onco said that was the best decision, since now it should not be affected as badly.  We shall see!  Now wearing no creams or aloe on the affected area prior to treatment.

    Hi Britt,

My rad onc would not allow any creams/oils/lotions before or after rads unless and until severe skin issues arose.  Perhaps because of my AA skin and/or possibly because I adhered to that and have put no creams or lotions or oils on that breast, I only have some darkening so far but no pain, tenderness, or peeling.  I keep expecting it to happen (watch I'll be back here tomorrow crying from pain!)  Also stopped wearing bras from day 1 of rads.  Only wearing camis and when I walk around at work I just keep my arms crossed over my chest to hide any bouncing LOL.

Patoo and Britt--Great to hear that you're coming to the end.  I just had 20 of 33, so it's nice to do the comparative countdown.  Also reassuring to hear that your skin issues are working out well.  I'll borrow some of that karma and keep my fingers crossed!

    Hi Patoo and Catherine!

Patoo:  I hope you skin remains in good condition!   I have been going braless 98% of the time - I am only a 34B, and wear a lot of cammies and tops with wireless shelf bras.  And if I do have to wear a bra, it has no underwire and is a size larger than I usually wear.

Catherine:  13 more to go!  I have 15 (starting tomorrow) - thanks for good wishes re the skin!  I am only using pure aloe vera on it from now on - AFTER treatments!

Thanks Catherine....ahh, it reflects light perfectly off my bald (still!) head.

12 down..........skin still holding up, just feels tighter when I stretch it over my head during treatment.

I'm glad everyone is fairing well, aside from delays which suck bad enough!  I know we all just want to get this mess over with!

It seems to be a trend with the rad onc. not allowing radiation to be blamed for anything.........GEEZ, do they have stock in the equip. co. or something?  Be curious to see what your onc says susan.

I actually came home and drank a huge glass of milk.......nausea subsided......go figure.  I really wanted coffee, but my tummy protested at the thought.  I hope it passes, I'll never make it without my daily infusion of caffiene via java...........big sigh.

May snooze a bit with my lil' champ............take care ladies.

Hi gals.  Geez, this is the first time I've been able to post all day!  I got to work and had my boss near me the entire day.  I feel so detached when I can't touch base with you guys.  Well today I had my first boost.   Only 6 more to go!  The boost was quicker than the others and I would have been out sooner but I had to wait for my doctor.  Oh, I just love that guy!  He really is super and I love getting the "Hello Beautiful" every Tuesday... lol

I wasn't nauseous at all today.  Hopefully that is gone.  I wonder if it could have still be a SE from chemo.  Who knows with all this stuff we're having done to our bodies!!

     More tomorrow!!

    Love, Elaine

    Hi everyone,

Today was #5 for me and also my first appointment with the lymphedema specialist.  I go back tomorrow morning to learn manual lymph massage and get some PT exercises and then will have rad #6 before going to work.  So far my skin is fine, and I'm hoping it continues that way.

It's great to come here every day and catch up with everyone.  Take care.

Only 4 more left here.  My skin is definitely red and prickly.  Onc has been more sympathetic and helpful than the rad onc.

Elaine and BrandonMom--You;re so close to being done and your se's seem to be pretty darmed manageable.  That's such great news!  It keeps me hopeful.  Also, Shan ans Elaine, good to hear that the nausea is subsiding as well.

I've been a bit of a slug lately...I'm allowing myself to think it's becasue of rads, but I've also just been a bit lazy about it.  I need to slap on the ipod and just get some aerobics in.

Fifteen down and 13 to go! Skin still good.

I have an appointment with my PCP this PM to check out my ears, which began to ache last night. At this point, it would be nice to have a simple answer to my continuing dizziness and light-headedness.

13 down, 12 to go... half way done.  Took Zofran last nite for nausea and it went away for the most part.  I found that eating made it go away too.... aha... but that could be a bad thing!  Today so far , knock on wood, no nausea.

I see my rad onc first thing tomorrow morning before treatment, so I'm asking about this nausea crap. Will let u all know what he says!

Enjoy the rest of your day girls!

alright, I'm terrible at checking in, this past week has been crazy. I'm finally half way thorugh rads :) And I'm happy to say that nausea/queasy feeling has gone away and that crudy taste in my mouth is also gone :) My onc is admitting that these 2 can be rads SE, but they're not your typical ones and he told me that they usually go away within the first 3 weeks instead of getting worse like fatigue & redness. Today was #17 (out of 33), I can def. see the radiated area on my breast, it's red, but not horrible yet. I'm hoping it won't get much worse by the time I'm done.

Does anyone knows how long do we have to keep covering our skin after radiation?

cebula--I've heard that the radiation effects continue 7-10 days after.  So I would think you should wait that long a least before exposing the skin to direct sunlight.  I'm sure your rad onc will be able to give you a better answer depending upon how your skin holds up.  Even witht the worst of side effects that I've heard others get, the bounce-back time is pretty quick after the txs end.  So, fingers crossed!

    Hi Everyone,

Just realized today was #25 (I intentional lost count for a while - seemed to make it go faster). I've been using Silvadene and woke up the other day with the creases in my radiated area & neck all black and burned looking! Seems my rad onc forget to tell me that the Silvadene does that - I was freaked. Scrubbing gently took it off, with some skin, too. Also noticing small bumps on my back - it this common?

Eadsla, I thought folks say I have to stay out of the sun for months - was bummed as summer is coming & I love our river trips.  Is 7-10 days enough time out?

Anyone know if rads has an effect on the thyroid? - seems I have a nodule there.

    Great days to everyone,

    Gail

25 down / 8 boost start tomorrow!  Still only darkening of the skin but no other skin irritations.  Did feel more fatigued this afternoon but not so bad now so must just be the busyness at work.

I also thought I've read here that the time to protect against the sun was 9-12 months - but I could be wrong.

Bettelou68 - wasn't vertigo one se?  Let us know what your PCP thinks.

Starting to feel the tiredness, but my life has been non stop and I am not getting enough sleep for a "normal" night let alone with all the body is dealing with right now. So I am not surprised that I am feeling it more as every day goes by. Was watching a movie with my husband last night and fell alseep before 8pm lol, but then was up till midnight working on laundry.

I have a very distinct rectangle where I am being radiated, pink and sometimes a little tender, but nothing bad. I started to get a slight itch on Sunday, nothing that was a bother, but discussed it when I met with the doc yesterday. I normally see her on Thursdays, so now I won't see her for over a week now? Hope the skin holds up. Anyway..have a little itching here and there every once in a while. We discussed using hydrocortizone (?) cream. But I'll be danged if I remember how she said to use it. I know I can't use the other creams at the same time. There has to be time in between. But she did say it is ok, to use one, and then the other a short time later, but that it shouldn't be done the other way around for the rads. Guess I'll have to ask again. Thought I would remember better now that I am not in the OMG "C" state and am just going along with each day. Had to laugh, was discussing something with my daughter about my memory being worse if I had done chemo...and her boyfriend mentioned that maybe I have "radio" brain. I think it's just the aging process, but ....lol

    18 down 12 to go.....

Bette- hope they figure out the dizziness for you....

10 Down 20 to go Throat is sore on the side that gets radiated is this normal and please tell me it goes away as it is hard to swallow.  Is that a bad sign for things to be happening so soon?  Bette, I have the dizziness too they told me that it was vertigo probably brought on by nerves I don't feel nervous or too upset except for my 17 year okd daughter telling me shes having a baby!!!  But had the problem before that.
