    They haven't figured out that we hae an upstairs maternity loft, and they're laying on the ground.  I think we have to build a laying box attached, with a hinged lid so it's not so hard to gather eggs.

    Congrats on your new girls, Annalemma!  Hoping you don't need a 5 a.m. rooster to keep the ladies happy and laying.......

    Ha - I thought this was about new breasts for some reason.  I don't consider myself a City girl but I didn't even know those were hens from the picture.  How do they look different than the roosters?

    I wish I could do this but my neighbors are too close.  Oh well, I wouldn't be a good mother hen if I don't know the difference between a hen and a rooster! 

    I'm just curious, how many eggs do they lay?

    I have seven hens, and this photo was the first day, when the others were too shy to come out.  We've been getting three or four eggs a day!  These red hens are Rhode Island Reds, and they lay brown extra-large eggs.  And I have three cochins, who look large but they're just really fluffy, and they lay small eggs.  And one phoenix, who is a tiny beautiful lady who lays dainty little blue-green eggs.

    Ah, so sweet! Do you name them? Can you tell the difference between the red ones? Is it usual to have an "upstairs" area or were you trying something new?

    Nice job on the 3 eggs a day!  

    I, too, thought it was a breast reconstruction....Embarassed

    That is one elegant hen house.  I thought they looked like Rhode Island Reds and I am going to bore you with the tale of the "chicken lady".

    More than 30 years ago we lived in the NY area and periodically drove up to visit my sister-in-law in Newport, RI.  The absolute highlight of that drive was to see what the "chicken lady" had dressed her chicken statues in.  On her mailbox she had statues of a rooster, hen and chick, RI reds of course, and they had little suits according the occasion/season.  We saw them dressed as pilgrims at Thanksgiving, Santas at Christmas, in boaters in the summer, homecoming outfits in the fall, raincoats, Easter bonnets, and likely some things I have forgotten.

    I regret that I didn't take pictures or stop and tell her what fun I got from her efforts.  I did see her outside one time and waved madly and had my husband honk.  She waved back so at least she knew we appreciated her.

    Annalemma -- Please post some pics of the phoenix and the cochins -- I'm curious to know what they look like.

    I am going to have to show this to my dh.I absolutely LOVE chickens---they are the funniest little things. Used to live across the street from a man who had a bunch...don't know what kind. Spent many aftenoons and evening looking out my kitchen window while washing dishes watching them.  Broke more glasses....Wink

    I'm so happy you are enjoying my new hobby with me!  It's ridiculous how much pleasure I get from these birds.  But then, I'm easily entertained.

    The chicken house design is a hybrid of some online plans I saw.  The way we do things around here is I draw plans, and Greg builds it. (Not just chicken houses - everything!)  There is a penthouse - and that's where they are 'supposed" to go to lay, but I'm not having real great luck with that, and they've been mostly laying on the floor, where it's hard to get the eggs out.  Right now they're inside my fenced garden, pulling weeds for me and eating insect larvae, but in a couple of weeks the henhouse will come out, and I have designed a moveable run that will attach to the coop when I don't want them running loose in the yard.  This is a learn as we go along venture.  But, I got five eggs today!

    What's the difference between hens and chickens? I may feel dumb when I hear the answer...Embarassed

    Can I guess and say chickens don't lay eggs?

    Chickens can be male or female, hens are female, roosters are male.  So some chickens lay eggs, some don't.

    So the group  Adult Chickens is composed of  hens (female) + roosters (male)?

    Yes chickens is the sort of generic term.  It's like horses means all those big things you ride, but there are mares and stallions.  And geldings which are the capons of the horse world.  I never thought about it before but we actually have these sorts of terms for most of the common domestic animals.

    (Those are foal, aren't they?)

    At least with horses you know the mares are the girls and the stallions are the boys and the geldings are the guys who can give you a killer haircut and then redecorate your house!

    BUT! -- geldings can win the Kentucky Derby -- just ask the jockey on Mine That Bird!

    Problem is, no chance of siring another winner, unless he made a donation before the operationWink.
