edited June 2014 in Life After Breast Cancer

I was recently married and while speaking with my agent for car insurance, she said that maybe I need to look into getting life insurance because of my recent marriage. I told her that I am a breast cancer survivor and that no one will insure me because of it. She mentioned that the insurance premiums unfortunately would be very expensive. Is that true?

You may be ok - they rate it on stage (and you were stage 1) and years past diagnosis (and you are almost 5 years)

    Shop around and

    Congrats!

I think it is illegal (in my state anyway) to discriminate against someone who is a cancer survivor.  You are definitely a survivor so assert your rights and ask a lawyer if you have to.  Tami

I, too, am shopping around for life insurance, I did find a $10,000 policy with Mutual of Omaha like Letha was talking about. I wish I had thought of this many years ago, now all I have is a $10,000 policy. But that's better than none at all.

Can I ask approximately how much the premiums are on this Mutual of Omaha policy?

Edited to add:  I guess I am not eligible since it says the issue age is for people 45-85.  I am only 40.  I am still curious about the premiums though.

You might look into whether your employer offers life insurance. Usually that type of insurance, which is term insurance, doesn't require any medical underwriting.

I think disability insurance really benefits a lot of women who go metastatic, usually that is also purchased through your employer where there is less underwriting.

roseg, I'm self employed and don't have an employer from which to purchase insurance. I agree that would be ideal.

    Dx 1/12/09, IDC 2.6 cm, Stage 2a, Grade 1, 0/10 nodes, ER+/PR+/HER2-, MIB-1 15%, Onco 14, BRCA neg. Bilat mx w/TEs 2/3/09. CMFx6 3/2/09. Then tamox & bisphospenates. www.caringbridge.org/visit/stacybrownbraeske

Even most policies that don't require a physical require that you answer a questionnaire.  It will ask if you have had certain diseases, and if you have, it won't cover your death from those diseases.  So, it wouldn't cover if you die of cancer, but if you die of swine flu, it would.

Samiam, my policy with Mutual of Omaha is just on myself and for a $10,000 policy I pay $90 every 3 months, which breaks down to $30 a month. Alot of the companies do ask you a few questions but this one didn't. Also, the lady who said it was easier to get life ins. after 5 yrs past your bc surgery made a good point, that's what I found out, too.

Life insurance is very difficult to get after a diagnosis of cancer. They don't have to write a policy on anyone and have underwriters who judge the absolute risk to the company. Thats why for most policies over a certain amount they require not only health checks (blood, weight, etc) but credit reports, etc. They even ask what your hobbies are. When my husband and I got insurance 10 years ago he was a scuba diver. The insurance company approved us but put in a rider that stated they would not pay a death claim if it resulted from scuba diving.

I also have insurance at work and they don't require anything. My husband is a federal employee and they can automatically buy five times their annual salary in life insurance for a nominal fee.
