Question for the community

Hi everyone:

I am the husband of a breast cancer survivor (2006, stage III, lobular, ER+, mastectomy, AC followed by T, and radiation). I have found great helpful information in these discussion boards and other similar sites. My wife and I have often brought questions back to her doctors because of information we learned here. Thanks for sharing what you have learned.

(I never posted before, just read, so I just joined so I could post this).

I am a PhD student who has chosen to study the experience of women after BC treatments end. I would like to post an invite to participate in my study in this discussion board. However, I want to respect the community and only do that if the community is okay with it. I contacted the moderators about it, but have not heard back. I suspect they are quite busy. Other studies have been posted and there are no rules against it. But it is your discussion board so I wanted to check first.

Would anyone find my posting an invite to participate in my study objectionable?

FYI: My study focuses on learning from the woman's experience, something that the researchers who have studied this time period, after treatments end, have done very little of. My feeling is, if you want to know what a process is like, go to the people who are living it.

Thanks,

Charlie

Hi Charlie - you really do need to get this cleared by the moderators of the site. Send them a PM - if they don't respond in a few days - send them another PM ... just keep pestering them until you get a response.

I would not object & hope you get the approval you seek. Kudos to you for doing such a study. :)

Thanks Doreen and Momo for your comments.  One of the moderators did contact me, so we will see.

Thanks for the kudos Momo. I was already studying transitions in organizations. When my wife was diagnosed I took a leave from my PhD program to support her during treatments. When she was done we kind of looked at each other and said, "now what?". From my other work I know there has been a lot of research done about transitions. Yet, when I looked at the BC research, there was not that much done on after treatment transitions, what was done was contradictory, and very little of it lets the women's voices come through. So, while there is more money to be made by studying the corporate world and then consulting, the humanitarian aspects of studying the BC transition is more appealing to me.

It is an excellent plan.  I hope the moderators agree.  You are a great husband.

Sounds great and I hope that you will be able to post when you're ready to start your study. You know how to reach those of us who have already responded positively.

    What field are you in?

The field is Leadership and Change, I was focusing on the transition individuals go through when adapting to major change.  While it is a multidisciplinary program, my focus is mostly social psychology.

The study is already underway.  Several other BC support organizations did post or send out an email about my study and the response has been very good. I still need more African American and Hispanic participants to make sure their voices are heard too. The breastcancer.org moderators reviewed my study but never got back to me, even after several attempts on my part.

There is more information about the study on my web site and I will probably post a summary of the results this Fall.   Here is the link: www.home.earthlink.net/~survivorstudy

    Thanks for your positive reply.
