I want to start a Non-Profit Org...what do you think?!?!?!
Hi Floyd Warriors-
In my search for "WHY ME?!" I am inspired to start an organization (web based) that will act as a support system for friends and family to come in and physically help Moms. I heard all about the Breast Cancer support groups...but who comes in and puts food on the table, wash the clothes and cleans the toilets!??!
I will be developing an online site to help friends and families coordinate their efforts in doing that...along with suggested recipes for Moms on chemo, what to do with toddlers and kids, helpful hints in playing MOM while Mom can't, etc...
Please give me feedback as I want to do this! What organization does this already, is it a good idea, any suggestions???
The site would be completely volunteer driven- a community care links network of sorts.
Those Moms registered (diagnosed) will be my Floyd Warriors (nicknamed after PINK Floyd).
THANK YOU!!!
I was just diagnosed 4 weeks ago and have a new life mission...

Don't mean to bust your bubble, but......
That is a great idea, but it needs to be community based - local. Contact your local American Cancer Society.
Good luck in your treatment.

I think you have a great idea. My husband passed away in February following a bone marrow transplant. I met many families that needed help and support while he was in the hospital. I wanted to do something to help them. With help from family and frineds I found a foundation that was linked to the hospital and started a memorial fund in my husband's name. I joined the board of the foundation and focus on fundraising. We provide apartments to families that travel here for treatment for cancer. I love doing this. I was diagnosed with IDC Stage 3 in December. It looks like I'm going to get the full perspective on this.
The point of telling you this is to say that you can do this. Start locally, see what works and then look to spread the idea. The fact that what you want to do is completely volunteer based is even better. I've found that many people want to help and are more than happy to provide their time and a meal. Start with your own support group and see who gets interested.
Keep me posted on your progress.

Floydwarrior,
Great idea! I agree with Daffy and Lisa that you want to start with your local area, and expand from there. That will give you a chance to work out some of the details, logistics and kinks in a familiar space.
First place to start is the blue pages of your local phone book, and then google the types of services you envision along with your location to see what services are already available. You don't want to duplicate them, but maybe link with them. Contacting the local ACS is also a great idea.
I wish you good luck with this endeavor, and with your treatment. Keep us informed about your progress on both fronts.

Hi fellow Warriors!
Well, I wrote back January 29th I wanted to start an organization to help families dealing with cancer surgery and chemotherapy (coordinate help in their home). Despite having an 8 cm tumor removed January 9th and going through a dose dense treatment of A/C and now Taxol- I did it!!!
When I announced my idea only 4 people got back to me...warned to start small locally. I'm starting BIG nationally. If get a big response, I'll just get more helpers to input names!
My group is called floydwarriors.com. I help newly diagnosed cancer patients access a web daytimer to list needs their friends and volunteers can see and volunteer to do. It is totally free to use and when you log in I assign a name and password so you are given your very own day timer on line to post needs, your family and friends can easily reply to your needs by signing up for them.
My website is still growing as I want to add nutritional information link as well. Along with the site I started my own line of Cancer Care Greeting Cards called floywarriors.com that will hopefully be coming soon to a retailer near you. I have a line of specialty products as well, that will be available to purchase on-line hopefully within the week.
My mission is to start a new attitude regarding cancer across America. It is not a death sentence- at all! We are Floyd Warriors fighting on the front lines to battle this epidemic called cancer our nation has been plagued with. How and if we choose to fight is up to us.
I hope my story at least inspires you who are just diagnosed today, to still pursue your dreams, start your own life missions! Look what I did in 3 months!!! While undergoing chemo and having a 20 month old baby too!
FIGHT ON FLOYDWARRIORS- WE ARE THE CHOSEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Lisa!
The site is up and running, and looks like it will be very helpful to those women who are in active treatment and need an easy to use place to coordinate those offers of help from well meaning friends and relatives with their actual needs.

Congratulations Lisa! I think what you are doing is totally amazing!
