Hi, all ~  Well, as Kari mentioned, it's getting HOT here!  It's 94 right now and supposed to hit 100 this afternoon.  It will soon be time for those of you in the NW, NE and midwest to start lauding your beautiful spring weather over us.

Just finished my walk, but I had to cut it short because it was so hot.  I'll have to get out there much earlier from now on.  So, for the week, I did 12.41 miles -- not the improvement over last week I'd wanted, but my own fault for doing 0 over the weekend.

Have a great week everyone ~   Deanna

Hi Ladies, Hoping to join your group. I'm trying to walk more, but my toe is still discolored and sore from the Taxol (yes, that was over the end of Jan!) But, it keeps on acting up. So, it makes exercise hard. I don't want to stress it to the point where it gets infected again. See my reg doc Wed., maybe he can give me some advice. I do walk quite a bit at themall, but then my feet hurt terribly. I have the naurapathy, too. Well, I guess a lot of people do and to just do it. If itimproves the odds - what am I waiting for. I was supposed to start my Aromasin on the 15th, but haven't yet. I will take that tonight. I am the biggest baby - but the most determined baby, too.Smile Happy walking, Debs

Debisongbird:  I feel for you, I'm lost without my exercise.  Do you have access to a pool for swimming?  When my foot was in a cast I used a rower with only the good foot inside it and elevated the other on a pillow.  Or even just upper body weightlifting would at least allow you to get some exercise in.  Just trying to brainstorm to see if there are any options for you, that foot must be miserable. Best of luck

    Hi All

I haven't been good about reporting.  Everyone is so busy...I am impressed!

I had company in town this weekend but did keep up on my exercise Friday and Saturday since my company sleeps in and I am an early riser.  Sunday I was trapped in a swim meet all morning then a family function all afternoon so I just took the doggy for a quick walk.

I was soooooo bad about food this weekend.  Too many good eats and drinks because of my company.  I made myself get on a scale this AM just for punishment.  Back to the healthy stuff!

Debs, welcome to our group/this thread.  You can always try a stationary bike without the toe clips.  That way you can put as much pressure on it as you can tolerate.  Have you tried some core strengthening or upper extremity exercise.  Sometimes just moving any body part helps.

    Take care all

Thanks Kmmd & PT 63 for your exercise ideas. I think probably the stationary bike is my best bet. I'll drag it out of the garage tonight (smile.) I do want to exercise because I know it is sooooo good for me.Wish me luck. I am one of those people who has trouble sticking with a program, but I am motivated.

Hi, Ivorymom. Walking 30 minutes a day - everyday is great! I'd ask a doc about when to weight lift (or maybe theother ladies can help on that.) I would think you would want to be careful with that. As far as numb arm, after my operation (s), the numbness came and went. Although right under my armpit is still numb. I think that fluctuates. Good exercising and taking care of yourself! - DebiSongbird

Welcome to the new ladies...we are glad you have joined us.

For me...taught an hour of zumba today and worked on new routines most of the morning.  We have our three hour event coming up Friday night.

Finally got one of the local gyms here to donate space for Team Survivor, so I'll be teaching two more additional classes each week starting in June...that will put me up to at least 8 zumba classes per week...possibly 10.  Then I also have to work on new stuff in between!

I'll be glad when the weather warms up here so we can get the pool open........I hope to make good use of that this year!

Make it a great night ladies!

    Hi Ladies,

I did over 9K steps yesterday with the 3.7 mile walk in a little over an hour. My husband is carrying two 8 lb weights as we walk! :O  amazing! I am maintaining my wt. loss from colonoscopy... eating right and keep moving. :)

I don't do reiki but I have a friend who is certified in HT (healing touch) and she "works on" me about once a week, then we have lunch. I sometimes feel really interesting thing. Something is going on there for sure! Last week I felt like a melting then like I was floating or weightless. Very interesting.

debisong: yeah for you.  Keep posting here and we'll keep motivating each other

ivorymom: My advice from doing this? Decrease the weights from what you were doing previously and slooowwly move up.  Things like pec deck be careful not to overstretch on the down stroke so that you don't jerk when starting the lift--that's when you'll lose control and hurt yourself.  Watch for swelling underneath your arm and in your arm, if you notice it, you'll need to stop for a few days, then start back and lower weights and reps.  Sore afterwards is ok, hurting isn't. My numbness never went away, and at this point doubt it will change a lot

lisasayers: Going in for surgery Thursday, so probably won't be checking in that day to wish you good luck on Friday--so good luck and have fun on Friday

    I love this thread

I found it took months for the underarm area to heal from the node removal, and they only took 2 of mine! This was much worse than the area from the lumpectomy, which was large because my tumor was 1.6. My surgeon took out a big chunk and thankfully I had wide margins. I needed to start to feel normal again as quickly as possible so I did not sit around. Fortunately, I healed quickly and I took a bike ride a few days after surgery. I planned to just go a few miles, but it felt so good I did 10! It just felt wonderful to feel alive again. Biking was a great exercise because it puts no stress on the upper body. So get out the bike Deb!

As far as the weightlifting goes Ivory, I think you should hold off for a while. I did a lot of yoga at first. It will build your strength with the weigh bearing poses without over stressing. The chest and arm muscles have been affected by surgery. They need time to heal. Even though my surgery was minor next to what some of you have been through, the soreness under my arm took months and months to go away. I finally had to go to a massage therapist to break up the scar tissue after a year when it was still tender. She did finally get it feeling good. I do a lot of free weights now when I walk and I lift 10 pound weights every  night. It is nice to have biceps again! But take it slow at the beginning. You do not want to end up with lympedema.

Speaking of lymph. In case you missed my suggestion earlier, try a mini tramp or rebounder. I do about 20 minutes on mine everynight in front of the TV. It is easy, fun and very safe. If you are still sore from surgery, you can bounce without your feet leaving the surface. You can also run in place without stressing the knees. It does not take long before you will feel balanced and can add twists and higher jumps. Moving the lymph is essential to good health and it has been proven that jumping on the minitramps is a great asset to breast cancer prevention. By the way, I do it without a bra. The bouncing is healthy, although if you just had surgery, you might need to be more careful if the bouncing makes you feel uncomfortable or pain.

I have kept up my exercise and it is finally paying off.  Lost a few pounds and even went out to the driving range. Intend to play some golf got my mobility back in my left arm with the help of the weightmachines at the gym. Thanks ladies for all the motivation especially you Lisa I don't know how you do it all.Keep up the good work ladies.

    Checking in...

Went to the mall after work yesterday, 95 degrees here, where Deanna is it was hotter.  Had a healthy salad, they actually have an organic eat good place in our food court, then bought some flip flops then headed to my Reiki session.  Boy was that interesting, I didn't tell her anything and she honed in on the parts of my body I'm having issues with, every part!  That was really cool!  Can't afford to go back though so she suggested meditation tapes so my coworker will bring hers in tomorrow so I can burn it.  Cool!

Hotter today, this heat wave will break tomorrow I believe...have a gardening class after work today.  Lunch today with my older daughter who just became engaged in Cabo over the weekend!  WOW!

Springie, my hubby has 8 lb weights sitting on top of the treadmill that he uses too!

I need to look into that rebounder thingie.  Everyone, you are so motivating to me everyday!  Have a wonderful day!

    Good fabulous morning!!!!!!!!!!

Well it is raining here again today, but the weekend is looking AWESOME...upper 70's to low 80's which is seasonably high for this time of year...and I can't wait!!!!  My girlfriend is flying in from Michigan for the Zumbafest and we will be cooking out all weekend.  Just wish the pool was open! LOL

Yes!  Avacados are good for you!  I love them on a grilled chicken sandwich!!!  Now I'm getting hungry!  Time for my shake!

Keep up the great work ladies!!!!  Remember, every time you break a sweat you are doing your body good!

    Make it a great day!

    Lisa

Kari...did you try the energy drink?  Just curious!

Springtime, I will make you a deal: I will be your Chicago tour guide if you can get one of my pedometers to work! U of C is a very prestigious school. Your DD must be very smart! My only issue with the university is that they tore down the old Italian neighborhood where my grandparents lived to build it. My grandparents were never happy when they were displaced.

Lisa, since I exercise outside, and it has been a long cold winter, I still cannot break a sweat. But it looks like we are finally getting some of the warm air those California girls keep bragging about.  Today will be  a beautiful day for a walk on the river, and tomorrow I am headed to the arboretum. I love spring!

Speaking of sweat, what does it mean if you sweat excessively when you exercise. Yesterday I hopped on the treadmill and after 30 minutes suddenly realized I was sopping wet--even my hair. It was a little embarrassing...

Janet I sweat like that!  When I'm done with Zumba I look like I've just crawled out of the pool!  Sweating is a good thing, even though we don't like it.  It's our body's way of cooling itself down and also releases toxins!

I agree with Lisa, seems the more you exercise, the more your body kicks in to do it because it knows you'll be giving it a workout.  Have to say, never realized how much sweat my hair soaked up until I went bald.

LOL...Kmmd...I agree....the sweat just poured off my head when I was bald.  Now my little stubble is keeping it from running in my eyes as much! LOL

Getting ready to go sweat now!  Zumba here I come!

Finally, signing in today, geez!!  Been a busy workday!  So last night didn't do a darn thing, except go the gardening class (practically falling asleep during it), it was way too hot then, 98 degrees and it wiped me out.  So this Cali girl is not a bragging anymore- LOL!!  They did say on CNN "the west coast heat wave is headed east and those in the east who have been 20 degrees below normal will be 20-30 degrees above normal"...so ladies get ready!! Cool

Ok headed to the OB/GYN in a couple hours and afterward I am going to exercise!  Its Admin. Day and week, so I've been out to eat each day for lunch...trying to be good but yesterday was bad!  have to make up for it.

Lisa, I received the sample!  Thank you so much, its sitting on my desk but I haven't tried it yet, but will let you know.  Good luck with your Zumbafest and that is really cool that your girlfriend will be visiting, how fun!!

EWB, congrats to your brother too!!  how sweet!!  awwwwwwww!!

I've never been a big sweat person, shoot...I want to feel like I'm detoxing too LOL!

Oh I wanted to ask about doing push ups...I used to do them everyday before surgery along with situps, etc.  Haven't done much since last Aug in regards to that type of exercise.  I know some of you told me to start slow with weights...but what about push ups?  Can I start with 1...work up?  Does the lymphadema thing limit that?

What if you do the against the wall version of a push up, would that work?

Kari, just take it slow and don't overdo or push like you used to. I have started with weights and do 10 reps with heavy weights and stop as I feel the burn. I think we just don't want to get a lymphatic reaction. But slowly building is a good thing. We should be very strong in the arms so that "normal" things we do don't cause a reaction. This is how my PT explained it to me anyhow. And no hot tubs! Which is SUCH a BUMMER!!! I still stick my feet in, but honestly!!!

EWB - wall ones would be a good way to start too I bet... good idea...

Yoga was good tonight. Still holding on to my colonoscopy weight loss! I would love to lose another 1-2 and "break" into new digits on the scale. You know what I mean! I am trying...

    Zumba Fest!!!!!! sounds so fun.

Girls get this. TOday I did not walk  my walk due to Yoga and had less than 1500 steps on my pedometer!!! That is how sedentary I am if I don't get out there!!! I could melt into my office chair!!! Quite revealing I thought!!! Better hit the pavement again tomorrow!

EWB, wall pushups are a great idea. I started out by doing them during my walks, using trees, signs, etc. As they got easier and easier, I picked up free weights and then added a heavier and heavier weight.
