We have 20 Team members so far with 7 survivors that I know of. I'm not always getting notice when people sign up and was surprised to see a few more.

Was wondering if we wanted to put Waterlily on our ribbons as well?

Hey Nancy.....did you see that I 'finally' registered for the walk??? Don't know about the rest of the 'family'.......sent them a copy of your post but don't know if any have signed up or not.
More later........gotta get the biggest part of me in gear............(in other words........gotta get my butt in gear!)

Hi all--I am finishing up the last of the taxoterribles April 30th!!! I am almost a week out from taxoterrible #5 , felt okay, but then started spiking a fever. Now that rant/whine has been spent, I just want you to know I would like to know when you gather. Summer time is very good for me, especially after I get thru the last of the ses in may. I am considering the efficacy of rads-one node/stage one- and once that has been figured out, I await the final exchange of the implants.....I hope to hear from you all and look forward to getting together.
I have also been in contact with some mid michiganders and so will make sure to continue to keep communicating because I hope to have a get together. So glad for this board, this thread for the chance to talk to others who truly know, can relate, can feel, can cry, laugh and understand. Michiganders rock!!! I love this beautiful state.
-
Hi Jess...I hope you are feeling a bit better by now. We get together a few times each year...I believe the next will be the Race for the Cure in Detroit...on May 30.
Regarding the Race...do we want to plan for the after event at Hockey Town again? Or other ideas? I sent out my "please join our team" invite.
I sent in DD's wedding dress and cape...to Brides Against Breast Cancer. She really relt strongly about that...I did a good job with her I think!
I'm getting out in this fantastic weather today...I have been so swamped with work that I have not been able to enjoy it. I have flowers in bloom!
-
May 30th I will be getting together /organizing graduation for the seniors at my place of work.....Keep me posted, though. Thank you
-
One more survivior signing up...Conniesue.
-
Hey there, Michiganders - for any of you who live in mid-Michigan, some of us are getting together for lunch at the Mt Pleasant Applebees on Sunday afternoon 12:30 pm. (Apr 26) We'd love to have more join us. I have been lurking on this thread frequently and have noticed that you do get-togethers, but most of you seem to be from southwestern Michigan. But if there are other lurkers here that are more from my region, then please,by all means, join us! My name is Sue and you can just ask to be taken to our table upon your arrival. Please post here to let me know how many I can expect so I can be sure we have the right size table. I hope some of you are able to join us. take care, sue
-
Sue from Midland. Sure wish I could make it to your get-together. Maybe next time. Have a wonderful time & take pictures for us. I once drove to Chicago for their bc.org get-together.
Speaking of Chicago, Kats joined Wings of Hope! She won't be able to join us in Michigan this year though - the tease! With Conniesue, that will make 9 survivors. I'm counting Wendy but there was a blip when she signed up and hasn't been made official yet.
Jess - don't know if I love this beautiful State throughout the winter. But, tomorrow's forcast in the 80's!!!! Whoohoo. Hope you are getting through your treatment and can enjoy the weather.
Tomorrow the plan is to post around for Wings of Hope. I think May 12th is the last day to join the team.

Hi Ya,
Lobby Day is next week in Washington DC. Many gals from Michigan are going from Grand Rapids, Detroit, Lansing, and Kalamazoo affiliates. It is April 30 and May 1. We'll mostly be speaking to legislators about the ALERT Act and the EARLY Act that have been introduced in the Senate and House respectively. These are great bills and would mean getting treatments to patients sooner and also emphasizing the education needed for healthcare and people of women under 40.
I don't know about the Race. Ours in Kalamazoo is May 16. I have company coming from Ohio on May 29 for the weekend so I may need to bow out this year. I'll plan on next year, OK? Let me know when the next lunch is and I'll really try to keep the date open.
I wish you well with Race. It has been tougher this year to get people signed up and to raise money. Go figure. Love to all, Linda
-
Sue - I would of loved to join you girls in Mt.P however I am hosting a baby shower for my DD on Sunday. My DD is a graduate of CMU and we have visited Mt.P many times. I live about 2 hours from there. We have dined at that same AppleBee's several times. Have fun and take pictures.
Did you all get emails about tickets to the Tiger game in May? I am so excited about going. How many of you will be going to the game?
Linda - Sorry you will miss the race. Thank you for being such a positive voice to our legislators. I admire all your efforts for a great cause.
Nancy - Cute butterfly.....I found a big pink one to add to my sign.
Hi to the rest of the MI girls.

I thought I would post around to get the word out about our team. Where do you guys hang out? The board's layout has changed so much through the years, I'm a little lost.
I posted something under ... Walks Runs..., Moving Beyond and here. No one used to mind if we hopped topics in the past but things look rather disjointed and specific with the new format.
Hope all is well with everyone. It is supposed to be in the 80's for the next two days. I saw a dusting of snow yesterday. Welcome to Michigan.
-
Loving the Butterfly, Nancy!
I have no idea if anyone from my 'family' signed up or not. They've walked for 5 years and I sent them the Post you had here................but I'll be there!!
Mt. Pleasant........haven't been there in years. Maybe as we ease into summer we could find a 'half way' point where we can meet up. Love to meet new Michiganders!
Nancy.......sending you a PM.
Hugs,
Denise

Hubby is seriously thinking about joining me about the baseball game, It could be so fun - I am now a year out of treatment, and am starting to celebrate, and want to fight for those who come after me.
Neesie - you and husband remain in my thoughts daily -
OtherSue - I don't see why we can't try moving a little north for our next meeting - it'd be cool to meet more of us
Talk to you all soon
-
Ok, hubby and I have never been much of sports fans but Skinny Carol (who Bonnie calls our onofficial Team cheer leader) is a big fan. If you guys are going, I could ask dear Carol to go. Let me know if this is a plan. I hate to take the tickets away from someone who is really into baseball. Her hubby is also a fan so it would probably be me with them two.
Neesie ..... always thinking of you and your hubby. Got your PM and back at ya.
Sue and OtherSue - love these names!!! I'm in if we find a half-way point to meet or even if we don't. We could always car pool and make the trek. Where has Susieloutoo been?
Linda - keep us posted about how Lobby Day turns out. We will be with you in spirit.
Had my BRCA testing this week. Wasn't expecting another physical for some reason. Now everybody but the cabana boy has seen my breasts.
Nancy
-
Nancy - I already emailed Komen back about Tiger tickets. Hubby, son, daughter and I are going if we get tickets. Tickets are limited so hoping they come through. Our mascot cheerleader Carol would be a blast at the game. Looks like I am coming solo to the Komen walk DH is scheduled to work that day.
Sue - I like your new avatar - great picture. I wonder if our seats would be close to each other during the Tiger game?
Neesie - I will be your "family" at the walk. Keeping you and DH in my thoughts.
Last yr the Tigers used pink bats - wonder if I could sneak one home?!
Take me out to the ballgame.............

I thought you might be interested in some stats for our teams from 2006 to present. They are not completely accurate since each year we have had members join us after the official date so they didn't get on the Komen roster. In 2007 we actually had 50 members and 17 survivors. We just missed getting the most-survivor award.
We still have until May 12th to round up our friends to join us. That brings me to a question. I put together everyone's email address from the beginning and can send email to those who haven't signed up yet this year. If you have friends or family members that would find this annoying, can you let me know? I'm not familiar with all the names.
Wings & Tigers fans - hope you get your tickets.
No one is solo at the Komen walk! We are one big happy family. Did you see the post that there is a Detroit YSC group walking? I told them we would look for them.

Hey Mt. Pleasant ladies - Have a wonderful time at Applebee's today. Take pictures!
There is an active post under 'Help get me through treatment' called 'michiganders with bc'. Don't know how I missed that one. If anyone wants to jump over there and introduce yourselves, please do.

I've been posting around about Team Wings of Hope but I think I'm a tread killer lately! Hope everyone is out enjoying the good weather.

Hi All,
Got my race packet yesterday. Pink survivor tshirts are different this yr no logos on the back. I do like the front and the different quotes. White shirts are about the same and I think shirts fit the same as last yrs.
I did say Hi to the other MI thread. A couple girls close to my area. Wouldn't it be neat if some signed up for the walk.

Hi everyone,
Well I was all excited about the Tigers game until I realized we were going to be in Kalamazoo at a marriage enrichment seminar for the weekend. Bummer! I finally decided to take the plunge and actually register for the walk on the 30th. DH is going to walk too. I just wanted to find out if the group meets in one place prior to the walk so we walk together or just walk by ourselves. Is there a group that carpools from out this way (Livonia)? I would be happy to have people meet here; we live right at 6 Mile and I-275. I am really excited to try this. I get my steriod injection the week before so the back should be feeling just about as good as it can feel. Knees should hold up as long as I don't have to walk really fast. It should be fun. See you all soon.
Blessings,
Wendy
-
OK,
I'm on the page to register for the walk. Do I want the race packet sent to me or is someone picking them up prior to the race so we can pick them up from them OR do we just pick them up on race day? Hopefully someone will answer quickly so I can finish my registration. I hate to spend $8.00 apiece to have my and DH's packet sent here. I'm so cheap!!! If I had to, maybe I could send one (mine) then get the other whenever. Hope to hear from someone in the know soon.
Wendy
-
I hope I got you on time. I can pick up the t-shirts and arrange to get them to you before the race. Save yourself the postage!
-
Yeah!!!!!
I'm officially part of Wings of Hope for the 30th. DH too. Now I just have to start working out. I think I'll join DH on his evening walks. Just exactly how far is 5K in miles for those of us metricly challenged? Oh I feel those aching leg and butt muscles already.
Blessings,
Wendy
-
Wendy- it's about three miles. Glad you and DH are joining us!
I had my and my two friends' packets mailed here. I got the XL shirt, because last year the L was a bit tight. The XL will work for me, but OOPS- I ordered my friends xl also. Is there a way We cen exchange the xl's for Ls ??
Not sure I like the pink shirts this year as well as previous years. Will have to look at it some more.
-
This may sound like a stupid question, but, do we all wear the T-shirts for the walk? I would think so but since I've never done it I'm sure I will have all sorts of questions I haven't thought of yet. Is there still time to get the tags to put on the boas? I would like to add one on mine for both an honor and memory of. My mom died in 1986 and my cousin was dx'd about 6 years ago. Her dad, my mother's brother, just died last Monday of kidney cancer. That was one that had not been on the 'family cancer' list. He was 88 yo and had lived a very full life but it's still a loss since he is the last of that generation on either side of my family. We had gone down to visit him while we were in FL and I'm very happy we did. I was able to clear up some geneology facts, although I'll have to really verify some of the info since he was kinda out of it. The one kidney had totally shut down and the other was desperately trying to keep up. It was only a week between hospital admittance and his death. I'm thankful it was so quick and his suffering was minimal.
I don't know what my cousin is going to do. She is trying to get on the liver transplant list and unfortunately, I think she is too sick to even have the surgery. Her kidneys are starting to shut down because of the liver and I don't know if she can even live alone. She doesn't take the meds she's supposed to because she forgets because of the toxins in her body and then things really start to get bad. 3 weeks ago they admitted her to hospital and she received a pint of blood so that picked her up but she's bleeding internally for somewhere in her body that they haven't been able to find. Her brother and his wife live up here in MI and want to move her here but she can't take the cold. I really didn't expect to survive my uncle. I don't think she did either.
I would really encourage everyone to talk to their older family members before it is too late. I had never know that he was almost shot by a Japanese soldier that didn't know the war had ended when he was sent to the Phillipines to help rebuild the island after the Japanese surrender. I guess the guy was almost out of his mind and the Army had to bring in a high-ranking Japanese soldier to convince the Private that the U.S. had won. While he was there, he contracted polio and was flown back to the states in an iron lung in a medical plane that had no heat what-so-ever. They said he would never walk again and boy did he prove them wrong. He was a wonderful golfer and did some amatuer competitions. In the past few years, he had been experiencing 'post-polio' symdrome which had been really affecting his left side.
I don't know if anyone else has worked with the VA system but they are horribly understaffed. I know they are doing the best they can but it is the vets that are suffering. They should be treated far better than that for all the sacrifices they have made, but I don't know what any of us "regular" people can do. My DS volunteers to play Taps at military funerals and every Memorial Day since he was 10 he plays over his grandfathers and great-grandfathers graves. It is so wonderful to see everyone stop what they are doing as the song floats over the whole area. It's too bad he will not be home but in CA for his great-uncles memorial service. I know he would have considered it a great honor.
Well DH just called and he is on his way home. He had been installing some software at the office that was only 'going to take a minute'. Famous last words and 1 1/2 hours later! I had actually started dinner and it was going to be ready on time. This seems to happen every time I'm prepared. Maybe I'm being told something. Have a great evening and take care everyone.
Blessings,
Wendy
P.S. DS just called and pulled a 3.1 GP. Yeah!!!!!!! This ensures continuation of his scholarship for his senior year. Sure is a weight off of shoulders, his and ours.
-
Wendy, I sent you a "private message". You can retrieve it by going to the top of the page where it says private messages.
-
Wendy - Yes, we wear the pink survivor t-shirts and our friends and family wear the other one's. Some teams design their own but we do other things to stand out from the crowd - like the head boppers.
Yeah for your DS and his GP! Also - Great you and DH joined the TEAM!!
That makes 23 members and 9 survivors! We have until May 12th to round up more people to join us. Giddyup!
I'm sorry to hear about your family, Wendy. Your uncle sounded like quite an inspiration. I just started doing some genealogy on my family and created a website to keep everything together. My cousins did tons of research already. I took the photos and info from a family bible and scanned them in so we don't lose the info.
So, yes, that is what I've been doing instead of working on our Wings of Hope website. That is on my list right now!
Judy - I sent you a private message. I have one Large t-shirt we can swap of my DH and one small of mine since the survivors get a spare one every year (not pink). Maybe one of the other survivors on the Team doesn't mind swapping a Large for an extra Large of their spares? Do you need two? If that doesn't work out, we can send email to RaceLadyJan and see what she suggests. It used to be easy to ask someone at package pick up if we could swap but they changed the procedure.
About Team MEET from the Komen Site: "Meet your team beginning at 6:30 a.m. at Olympia Entertainment's Madison Lot, 111 Madison, bordered by Witherell, Adams, Madison and John R, directly across from the southwest corner of Comerica Park -- a short walk to the Walker Start. Bring banners, signs and team spirit -- photographers will be shooting, and secret judges will be on hand, scouting out the winner of the Visions Spa Salon "Spirit" Award. Foot traffic only; no vehicles in Team MEET!" (I didn't know that about the Spirit award)
We always have a hard time with this because the lot is too crowded. We will work something out and we can also plan pick-up spots to do some car pooling. For a couple of years, a bunch of us met at the Meijer's parking lot in Livonia. Damn, I have to verify that. It was close to 96 around Canton or Livonia. Is there a Costco around there also? We ended up taking a few cars but followed each other in and that worked out fine.
I'm starting to get psyched about the walk! Someone post after me. I hate being a post killer.
-
There is a Costco at the SE corner of Middlebelt and Schoolcraft, right off I-96. I think this is the one y'all were talking about.
I would love to hitch a ride with someone else - my truck is a two-seater, and rather rickety, to be honest.
Wendy - congrats to your DS!
DD is struggling - all the things that are hard for a kid with learning disabilities, like organizing themselves, are tripping her up this semester. I could organize her, but I know she has to learn, even if it's to ask for help. Keep your fingers crossed, all.
