Green tea i am just starting to enjoy. Tumeric and ginger freshly ground I ad it to most of my stirfrys and stews. I also add fresh ginger and basil to my berry yoghurt smoothie in the am before hitting the gym. I swear it holds me through the morning and i am not pigging out atlunch. Anyone else have tips for us on the get healthy trail?
-
Wow, you girls really know your tea, I have heard contradicting reports about Green tea, so I don't drink too much.
mumayan, I missed my dance class yesterday, so as not to overdo it. I did half hour of Tia Chi today, so feel like I am on top of my exercise.
there is a new cancer support group starting tomorrow for expats, so i am going along to that, should be good, I am always keep to help those poor girls who have just been diagnosed.
Hope you are feeling better Spring.
Take Care everyone. Singapore Chris x

Just got my lab results for my Avastin treatment today and my sodium is low again! Darn it, too much water again!! I just don't enjoy tea/coffee, but force myself at work to at least have one green tea a day. I need to find some other things to drink that aren't full of sugar! any suggestions?
I did a treadmill quick 23 min. routine last night before running out to get a massage! How wonderful that felt!!
Singapore Chris, that's awesome that you can help the newbies out there! I'd like to do something like that too.
Make it a great day!

White tea? new one on me!!!
I survived my first colonoscopy and officially have a clean and clear butt!!! Wooo! Not even a pollyp or however you spell that. 5 years till the next one. Good!
I better exercise today. Yesterday was a waste! Just me drinking that glop and then running to the bathroom all evening long! I did lose 5 pounds. So that's good! ha!

Spring ~ Celestial Seasonings has a Decaffeinated China Pearl White Tea. It's tea bags, so may not be as beneficial as loose tea. But it's delicious, and I would think you should be able to find it in Raleigh.
Congrats on the clear colonoscopy! Deanna
-
Springie, YAHOO a clean and clear butt! That just cracked me up!!!!!!!
Back from my Avastin treatment, it was a piece of cake, oh wait...doesn't that sound good-a piece of cake, haha...you can tell I'm in a good mood!
Back to work...
-
Hi girls,
Glad your ok Springie, nice to hear you have a clean butt, always a good thing!
I drink a lot of soda water, as I hate normal water after that nasty chemo taste. It has no calories and somehow seems more exciting then tap water. Not sue if the bubble do me any harm.
Kari, I have a little band of chemo girls here, we all meet up a couple of times a month and sit with each other during treatment. On Monday we have a get together to celebrate the end of treatment for two of our group. I have bought them a little gift and made them both a certificate saying how strong and courageous they have been. Should be fun. Any excuse for a party!
The new support group was fun this morning, I met a new group of ladies all very nice and keen to meet others in or who have had treatment. There was an oncol there and the group just fired questions at him, it was great. I will be sharing my experience with them next month and I am writing an article for their magazine. Is there any opportunity for you to help other girls where you live Kari?
Have a great weekend everyone. Singapore Chris x

Sing. Chris - Your support group sounds terrific! I will ask my clinical trials nurse what she thinks, we have gotten pretty close. She sat with me during my treatment yesterday and we chatted about clinical trials and vitamins and nutrition. She is always so helpful and she's a wealth of knowledge. With my work schedule it may be hard to work something out but you never know! Thanks for the info!
Reporting in...no exercise yesterday, saw my chiro and my darn low back and neck are giving me issues. I will walk tonight. "Massive warmup" the weatherman said. Our weather has been a yoyo lately!
Make it a great day!

Here's some motivation for you all.......running out the door to Zumba!
Lifetime exercise may cut breast cancer death risk April 15, 2009 By Joene HendryNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women who participate in recreational exercise and sports over their lifetime may be lowering their risk of death from breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence.Among 1,231 women with breast cancer who were followed for a minimum of 8.3 years, those who obtained about 4 hours or more of weekly moderate-intensity recreational activity over their lifetime had a 44 percent lower risk of death from breast cancer, report Dr. Christine Friedenreich and colleagues.Risk for recurrence, progression, or new primary breast cancer was likewise reduced by 34 percent among women reporting similar levels of recreational physical activity, note Friendenreich, of Alberta Health Services-Alberta Cancer Board in Calgary, Canada, and colleagues. These findings suggest "being physically active before a breast cancer diagnosis can improve survival after breast cancer," Friendenreich told Reuters Health. However, occupational activity and physical household work such as gardening, housework, and do-it-yourself home repair did not confer benefits similar to those from lifetime exercise and sports activities, the investigators report in the International Journal of Cancer.Friendenreich's team compared the lifetime physical activity reports of 1,231 women, who were 56 years old on average when diagnosed with breast cancer, with their outcomes. Over a minimum of 8.3 years of follow up, 341 women died (223 from breast cancer) and 327 had a recurrence, progressions, or new primary breast cancer diagnoses.Compared with the least active women (less than 1.4 hours per week of recreational activity), those who engaged in more than 3.9 hours per week of moderate intensity recreational activity had 34 percent decreased risk for the combined outcomes, and 44 percent reduced risk for death from breast cancer. These effects remained apparent after allowing for other factors potentially associated with survival such as body mass, tumor stage, and age.Vigorous-intensity recreational activity lowered the risk of breast cancer mortality, but did not appear to reduce the risk of other outcomes.Friendenreich notes her team continues examinations of "exactly what type and dose of activity is related to improved survival after cancer." Ultimately they hope this research leads to development of clear exercise guidelines for cancer patients.SOURCE: International Journal of Cancer, April 2009

Lisa, I LOVE IT!!! We have to be in motion! (as I sit here at the desk! ahhhck!)
Spring.
-
Lisa's article is the best motivation I can imagine!
-
Hi girls,
If Lisa's article doesn't get us moving, nothing will. Thanks Lisa for posting it.
I haven't done any exercise today, but did have foot reflexology, does that count
.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Yes....the article just confirms what we already knew!!!!!!
Just got home from rocking out my Zumba class!!!!!!! Had a new lady who works out at the gym...she came up after class and said, "I didn't know how much of a workout this would be!" LOL
Like when I taught the high school girls softball team a few weeks ago...the coaches, all men, were calling for the AED machine half way through the class!!!!!!!! ROFL
-
Off to walk in the beautiful sunlight! Great day here. Did the weekly grocery shopping, I tell you, THAT shoudl count for some exercise!!!
Spring...
-
Took the day off today.Went into TO for dimsum and totally pigged out. Haddn't done that for about 6 months. I guess tomorrow i will stay at the gym a little longer to burn off all that yummy bad food. One year since DX I guess I am finally recovering my old self.
-
Lisa,
Someone joined our Zumba class because her aerobics instructor was on vacation. At the end of class she said she gets more of a workout out of aerobics but she had "fun" in Zumba. She didn't know the moves so she barely worked out, too busy trying to figure out the steps.
Personally, I like mixing it up. I tried running for the first time today since the mastectomy with tissue expanders. The night before, I did the eliiptical, weights and some ab and leg floor exercises.
-
kfinnigan,
Can you do yoga to help your back? I get terrible back pains if my hamstrings are tight. I try to do yoga when that happens, even though it isn't all that pleasant when I am doing it, I feel much better the next day.
-
Hi Dianne
Funny about that woman....I'm dripping wet by the end of Zumba class. But you are right, the first time some people don't get quite a work out because they are trying to learn!
For me...it's Zumba....I teach 6-10 classes a week and then also prepare/practice routines at home. Not much time for anything else. Well, in summer I'll enjoy our pool!
-
Dani42: how did the running with expanders go? I've missed it and done it for short sprints but it causes such pain, arm nerve problems, and muscle spasms for the rest of the day, I've not done it much. Definitely could tell it wasn't a good pain. I hear you on the yoga, could not have done chemo without it. I think it was the only thing that helped with the muscle aches.
Going in for my exchange this week. Lisasayers, I've been holding on to what you said about getting back to exercising after. It's the part I'm dreading. My PS is very strict about limiting activities afterwards. Her PA actually said "you're not allowed to break a sweat." UGGGHHH I don't think people who don't exercise realize what that does to those of us who do.
-
knmd how soon did they allow you to exercise after the mastectomy? Just curious.
Each PS is so different........... Makes you wonder. But the implants are different too! Who knows!
-
They told me one month, but no heavy lifting for 6 weeks. You know, going against medical advice is something I don't recommend for myself or anyone else, however, those of us who exercise a lot get used to what we can do and not do, what is "pushing it" and good and bad pains. I can't believe with some common sense that couldn't be relaxed a little. I remember coming across someone else whose PS told her you obviously know what your body can do, just be careful. You're right--all PS are different and give very different advice. Oh well, I'd be stupid not to follow it, just going to be a frustrating time.
-
You are so right. I know after my exchange surgery my PS came out to talk to my husband and he said, no exercise for two weeks. And my husband said, "We are talking about MY wife, you know how she is." So my ps wrote on my discharge papers, "No VIGOROUS excercise for one week!" LOL
But you are right, we know what our bodies can do...and I didn't do too much...I did what felt right and every day I do more!
-
Lisa and all, "vigorous" exercise is so good for us!
Well we walked like crazy people both days this weekend. Well over 10K steps a day, wish I could do that every day! The walk we take is ~65 minutes and 3.75 miles and 7500 "steps" according to my pedometer. You would think I could devote 65 minutes a day to my wellbeing!!
Spring...

kmmd
The running didn't bother my tissue expanders at all. I haven't had a fill in just about a month so the aches and pains have pretty much diminished.
My ps told me no restrictions while I was still in the hospital for the mastectomy. He said the same thing when I saw him in the office a few days later. I always make him say things twice! LOL Then my next appointments I would ask him specifics, "what if I worked my biceps with weights?" He would just tell me to do what I could do. This was all well before my 6 weeks post op.
Good luck with your exchange this week. That is very exciting!
-
Hi Girls,
You all seem to be exercising like mad, keep up the good work.
I have a question, Springie maybe you can answer this, where are you supposed to hang your pedometer, mine says not from you belt, not in your pocket, not from you waist, not around your neck, but it doesn't tell me what I can do with it. Springie where do you put your?
Have a good days girls, Singapore Chris x
-
Chris, good grief, indeed, where to put that ! On your shoe?
Mine says I can put it anywhere, even in my purse. (??) I typically clip it on my pocket, at church in my purse.
I know it is not gaging the "miles" correctly, as I didn't do the set up at the start and it must default to teensy steps! We measured in car and it was 3.7 but pedometer thought 2 something miles.
It is raining, but I am wondering if I shoudl walk anyway. Maybe it would feel interesting to walk in the rain??

I have all my French students back on the plane, so now I have time to get back into my routine. I did keep them walking all over the city with me. When they complain that taxi's are faster, I remind them that they do not get the feel of a city unless you walk it. Although, I drive them crazy because I walk too fast, and they just want to keep yakking and taking pictures. They were wonderful kids and so well behaved. Lots of tears at the airport. I know I do a good job when I see that! So if any of you want a walking tour of Chicago someday, let me know. I will walk your butt off! I wish I could get a pedometer to work. I have tried three different ones, and I just cannnot get them to work right!
We are getting lots of April showers too. I will walk in snow, but I do not like to walk in cold rain. So today I am going to clean all day (I am way behind in that because I was so busy). I need to start potting up some plants too. I love spring!
-
Vivre, I am remembering that Chicago "walking tour" offer. Oldest daughter keeps talking about University of Chicago for grad school. If that comes true she'll need your tour and so will mom and dad!
Plant potting is good for the soul. Besides that, MyFittnessPal.com has "gardening" listed as a cardiovascular activity!!!!
smiles smiles smiles.

Hi Ladies, wow everyone has been busy! I didn't check in all weekend, but I was out there!! Woke up bright and early Sat. morning and hubby said let's go for our walk now. We haven't done that since before dx so it felt normal! Sunday, again I got up and did my walk early and then housework, and shopping! I was pooped and that darn pain came back in my hip/leg yesterday after the housework. I have tried yoga/pilates, but for now I have to figure out what's going on in my back that's causing the pain, cause it gets aggravated when I stretch. Started before rads when I was sleeping on that one side and miserable...I'll get it figured out.
I have a Reiki session tonight that a friend paid for. I am intrigued to what that will be like. A gardening class after work tomorrow and then dr. appts wed/thur. Between work and appts. I'm a busy girl! LOL Well we're having a heat wave! Geez...cold...windy...hot...we're getting it all!!
Have a wonderful day!
