Hello Ladies,
breast cancer - tick
bilat mast - tick
mid life crisis - tick
reconstruction - tick
now for some fun. I have booked (today) my flights to have two weeks in New York in early August. Can anyone recommend where I should stay (as a solo traveller)? Any budget hotels that have ambience and close to the action (galleries, shops, plays, restaurants...) I would really appreciate any ideas please. And if you travel across to North Queensland in Australia, I'll be very happy to oblige.

if you don't mind "campy" there's a holiday inn on 10th ave that is walking distance to the theatres. I also can volunteer a free small spare bedroom at our house in CT if that at all helps. We're about 67 miles from NYC or about 1 1/2 hours if taking the commuter train into the city. No matter where you stay, you are welcome to visit here and see the Beach or hiking etc here. PM me if you want more information.

I stayed in a nice hotel on Broadway and 72nd St. at Christmastime -- the Belleclaire Hotel. It's not right near the shows or the big stores, but it's kind of cool to be in a regular, residential neighborhood and it is one block from a subway that can take you anywhere. It wasn't cheap by normal standards but by NYC standards it was very reasonable, friendly, and clean -- and the rooms have a lot of character.
Have fun!

The Belleclaire is very nice. Seems like even the hotels that once were ultra-budget are raising their prices, though. I was going to recommend Hotel17 in the Union Square/Gramercy Park area (kind of a European pension) -- even they have gone up to $135 a night. Don't know your budget, but for ultra-cheap yet safe, clean, private (not like a youth hostel) and in Manhattan (also near Union Square, a hub to all subways) -- you can't beat the "Seafarers and International House" operated by the Lutheran Church: http://www.sihnyc.org/newyork-guesthouse.php
You might even want to spend two nights in a fancier hotel for "partying" and then switch to SIH for budget reasons.
I'll PM you!
