Diagnosed with LCIS first??
I was just diagnosed with LCIS three weeks ago and just started reading this message board. I am curious how many of you who have ILC were diagnosed with LCIS first? Is it possible to have both at the same time? And if you had LCIS first and then later ILC, how long was it before you were diagnosed with ILC?

Laurie--it is definitely possible to have both at the same time, in fact, LCIS is not usually found by itself but rather as an incidental finding when they're checking out something else of concern. I was very fortunate-- my LCIS was found without any invasive bc along with it--I had mammo, then core biopsy, then wide excisional lumpectomy to confirm it. I just finished my 5 years of tamoxifen and haven't had any other problems since. I continue with high risk surveillance of alternating mammos and MRIs, breast exams, and now take Evista for further prevention. My mom had ILC many years ago, but there is no mention of LCIS on her pathology reports that I can find.

I have pleomorphic LCIS and pleomorphic ILC. I found out about the LCIS when I was diagnosed with the ILC. Like Ann said, LCIS is usually an incidental finding, not a primary one.

Long story short I had both ILC and LCIS. I had 4 core biopsies, a partial mastectomy, and then a mastectomy. Along the way they found ILC, LCIS, DCIS, atypical ductal hyperplasia. The final path report said extensive residual LCIS.
My onc said LCIS is not related to ILC and that watching is the standard of care. But I found an interesting abstract from the 2007 Breast Cancer Symposium, "All LCIS is not created equal." I probably found it though links on this site.
I asked the onc about it, who said there is no commercial test to do the test reported in the abstract. When I asked what is meant by a "commercial test" he said one that is readily available to clinicians.
I saw my primary yesterday and asked for copies of the onc's reports. I find that the onc identifies me as a "challenging" case and from the tone of the reports, I don't think he is referring to the nature of the BC ! He comes highly credentialed, but I think he thinks he knows more than he does. He said in our last meeting that "you are only reading abstracts, not the full study." I do take a digital recorder to meetings with him and my surgeon, so I can review what they say later.
All good thoughts and hugs
Mary Jo
