For those starting chemo in June

Ya know kid I have a big ol belly too. I thought it was that I am getting older or the chemo or steroids or something. I look at least 10 months preg. after I eat and 8 months before. I really bloat now. This stuff just keeps giving me surprises. My bones and muscles feel better now that its warmed up but every couple days I hurt again, I guess the b.c. wants to remind me its still around. I so hate to go back to work on Mondays. My bosses kids have come home, well some for the wk. end from diff. parts of Il. so the house will be a wreck and guess who gets to clean? They all never had to do anything for themselves so they figure I should make my money. I am not a housekeeper but some how I get to do it. Penny pincher let the house keeper go and figured I could do it. Its a big house! I don't really clean I just go over things but I don't knock myself out cause its not my job. I didn't go to school for nursing to be a house keeper. Well gonna go plant some flowers. We rode the bike to Springfield for breakfast, the viberation kinda bothers my bones but not bad. Its a half hour ride up there. I am gonna get me a pillow to sit on. Hugs, Mary

Yes, spring is here. I raked the dead grass off my daffodils today and by tomorrow some may open. That's a good sign of spring. I took a beaded bracelet class the other day and ended up talking with a woman who's friend was just diagnosed with breast cancer at 34 yrs. She had some bracelets she had made for a fundraiser for her friend and she gave me one.. it is really pretty.
Went on a couple of bike rides this weekend- it was windy-but very nice. We go to a place for blueberry pancakes then ride back home- it's harder to do on a full stomach!
Have a great week and congrats on all the good health news!
Renee -
Hi Renee,
What kind of bike do you ride? The motor or peddlin' kind? I guess I am going to have to give in and get some exercise of some kind. -
I pedal- sometimes it is much harder than others-especially in the wind. We have a great bike trail system on old railroad beds. One is in my town and we ride it often and have been since the guys were very little. We'd pass the horse farm, the sheep and over little creeks and rivers. They could ride 12 miles by 1st grade. There is a cute little tavern 6 miles out that we would bribe them with a candy bar (and they would share 1 can of soda) We knew we would be close cuz there was an old farm with a rooster that would crow when you got close to it. The guys knew the tavern was only 3 blocks more. The 'grandpa' owner is now gone, the bar is still there and we go for pancakes now. Wow , times have changed- No kid I know would ride 6 miles for a candy bar and then have to ride back. I didn't give them candy or sugared cereal when they were little so it was a real treat... they still have pretty good eating habits. AAHHH memories! Renee
-
Wow Renee, that sounds wonderful where you live. We have a bike trail too where old railroad tracks once were. I have seen the bike trail many times, O.K.; from the car but I keep talking about actually biking on it. My husband has rode on it many times and he tells me its nice so I feel like I have actually been on it. I keep looking at my bike in the basement and thinking I would like to go for a ride but its hanging up and I have to get it up the stairs so I will get my husband to bring it up one day soon. Its so shinny and new and I hate to get it dirty and all. There are snakes on the bike trail and I would lose it if I saw one. AAAAHHHH my husband is scared of them too. We once went mushroom hunting and he was about 4 feet in front of me and saw a snake and ran out of the woods so fast screaming and I stood there looking at the snake scared to death all alone and I had to find my way out of the woods alone after dodging the snake. He is so brave!!!!Yea he would be a lot of help! I am going to bike ride soon. I really need to dye my hair. I tried but it didn't work very good. It seems the grey is harder to cover now. I will see about getting it done. It was straight as a board until a few wks. ago. Oh... My... God..., it is curly, I just let it be cause you can't control it. I am such a site. The top is still straight but the sides and back and just the lower half of the back is curly. Oh, its just something you don't see often, or never. Nothing surprises me any more, well, maybe all this gas I still seem to have. Man that can take the paint off a barn. I call it chemo gas. I think it's getting better cause my dog doesn't run from the room yipping any more. Hugs girls, Mary

Hi Girls - Haven't been on too much - I try when I can but I thought I'd let you know - I Finally quit the cigarettes - 4 days and counting. Of course I'm being a weenie and using the patch but I haven't picked up a butt yet. It does help with the cravings - it's the habit ones that are hard to break. I just hope I don't put too much weight on as I am trying to get rid of my chemo weight. I think quitting smoking is easier than that one.
I start Tamoxifan next month - doc told me to give myself a month off - yippee. Then a mamo in May and hopefully get this port out as long as everything is okay.
Hugs and prayers to you all,
Caroline -
Caroline,
Congrats on the quitting smoking. I'm still trying to accomplish that (OK, not very hard. but this weekend is the weekend).
Hope you all are OK. I actually exercised today (my onc would kill me if he knew I didn't do 30 minutes a day 3 days a week). Week after next I get another ultrasound to check a cyst that's been there for years and get my port out! Crazy thing to be excited about.
Mary, what'd you guys ever comeup with as far as starting your own biz? Janie, how's the Herceptin treating you? Renee, I'm impressed with your bike riding. I think Nathan and I are gonna hit some trails this weekend, before the weather gets TOO hot. -
Hi Girls,
Mary - My dandelion fuzz doesn't take a rinse very well either. I have "real" hair mixed with dandelion fuzz. I would like to get the dandelions weeded out, but the fuzz is what give me a little volume.
Caroline - Congrats on all your achievements and milestones. One day at a time on the smoking.
Paula - The Herceptin is going well. I have fewer side effects all the time. I was at Mayo Wednesday for my 3 month follow-up. The nurse said the study is closing (to new people) the end of this month and results will start coming in.
Taxes are done with 15 minutes to spare! As I was finishing up, I heard on the news that the area post offices were not staying open later tonight. That put me into another gear really fast. I do my kids as well as my own. I finished the boys earler and mailed theirs to them to sign and mail. Mine and my daughter's were a little more difficult so I did them online. I got to the end and was told I couldn't file them electronically. I had to print them out and rush to the PO.
Warm Fuzzies,
Janie -
Forgot about my taxes until 9:45 lastnight. Had one stamp who but me! My hubby went to get a stamp and went to Kroger, office closed, Wally, don't sell them, then finally to P.O. where I told him to go in the first place, thats why I gave hom so much money, in case he had to buy a book from the machine. Well he found a stamp half out of a machine and pulled real hard and it came out and he put it on the state and mailed it and the Fed. off. I know it won't get postmarked until today but hey, I tried. I have to pay since my boss doesn't take out so I get screwed good anyway. Only me, Last time I forgot to pick them up a few years ago and H&R block closed for several months. I finally found someone that worked there and they got them for me 3 wks. later. OUCH!!! PJ, we are still looking at a little eatery in Scottsdale. We are going to sell our(my husbands wood crafts too). He is making a lot of Southwest stuff. Gotta Go, Mary
-
So did none of the post offices stay open until midnight? From one procrastinator to another -- I don't want to see that tradition go! Good luck in AZ.
-
Hey Janie, our P.O. never stayed open late, too small a town I guess. The Springfield one does or did, I don't think they did this year. If they think they are teaching me a lesson about being on time... well better people than they have tried. Thanks Janie, we are not going until winter or fall maybe or when the heck ever. We are going just don't know exactly when, before it gets cold. Got Bailey my grandson and Bailey my bosses grandaughter, Penny pinchers daughter is like a grandaughter, She and her brother have spent a lot of time with me over the years as I babysat them the last 10 years while their mom worked, guess it was part of my job description I wasn't aware of but I became attached to them. They use to stay all night with me a lot when I worked the nights. Ohhhh, I jogged around my yard today a few, well couple , O.K. like 4 times. I feel good about doing some exercise. O.K. my yard is small but I ran around the pool and deck. I will work up to bigger better things soon or by the end of the summer, or not, thats pretty energy robbing and time consuming.I will at least think about it. Buffing up,Mary
-
Go Mary! That's 4 times more than I have run in a year.
Anybody going hatless yet? I've gone to drive-in windows a few times without a head covering. Nobody looked at me funny. -
Hi Girls, Not much time. There is a little eatery close by that is up for sale and we are thinking about it. It does great business. George dubya was in Springfield today. I wanted to go up and see Airforce one but no one thought it would actually come in cause Springfields airport is small. Wish George would of traveled around to view all the factory closings here in the central state. No sweat off his back I guess. He looked sooo bored at the Abe Lincoln grand opening of the library. They were televising it and he looked bored to death. Saturday night live needs those pics. He looked like a little kid rocking his chair on two legs and mouthing words to a secret service guy and laughing. He was not very presidentual. I think he has ADD. Well gotta go missed my one and only chance to ever see Airforce One. Oh Well,Hugs Mary
-
Oh, Mary, come visit us sometime. He flies in here all too often.
The restaurant sounds intriguing. What kind of food does it serve?
Not much happening here. I have a feeling my port removal's gonna get put off, since I had a voice mail from the surgeon's nurse at 5:29 this afternoon. Oh well, what's a few more days, I guess.
Having major insurance/payment headaches. Provider's trying to overcharge me and the insurer's trying to underpay. I'll probably have to take a week off work just to compare the numbers and straighten it out. Blech.
You guys take care... -
Mary, Dubya and/or other politicians seem to be holding up traffic in Atlanta every time I go there.
PJ, My insurance and providers have been driving me up the wall too. Among other things, I was precertified for my PET scan (ages ago) and now the insurance company is trying not to cover it. -
That wasn't comfortable. Got my teeth bonded on bottom where they were crumbling. I went to my brother-in-law. My husband went too as he needed his denture relined. We had talked to my b.in law about it a few wks. ago and made the apt. We needed to get in while we still had ins. My sister has filed for divorce. Yea, and he is a good dentist, a lousey husband but good dentist. Grandkids just got here and pizza is done. Later hugs, Mary
-
Mary,
How long did the bonding take? Do you have to go back? I stlll have to do the dental thingee. There are just not enough hours or enough $ to do it all at the same time. I've been doing the lymphedema etc. first. My insurance/providers have been charging me in the neighborhood of $20,000. I am supposed to have a $2,000 out-of-pocket cap. The Herceptin is causing flu-like symptoms, but I worked through the vomiting. Still have the aches. As long as it keeps zapping the guy at the copy machine, I will put up with the side effects. Clinical trial results are due to start coming in soon.
Have a good weekend ladies. -
Janie, I had to get numbed up so he could rough up the teeth and I had 6 or 7 done at $100.00 each. It took about 45 mins. The numbing took the longest. I can eat sweets now with out pain and my tounge won't get all scuffed up on the jagged edges. I sent you a joke I think you will enjoy greatly. My husband sent it to me as he is trained well and knew I would enjoy it. Grandkids just got up so I have to go. Sorry you are getting sick from the hercep. Thats a bummer but if it works its worth it. Hope you get to feeling better but that probably won't be till your done. Later hugs, Mary
-
Thanks, the joke is hilarious.
I feel better today. Keeping the annoying pain under control. The nausea is gone. -
I posted this under the HER2 threads already, but just in case you missed it. The preliminary results are in on the clinical trial I'm in. They are reflecting a better chance for long-time survival with Herceptin. I also heard on the news today that there is a new drug that is being shown to work when Herceptin doesn't for certain people.
-
Janie, that sounds great! You should be proud to be part of those findings. Even if it makes you feel crappy. Easy for me to say, right?
Everything's cool here. Got the OK from insurer for the genetic testing, so I guess I'll be doing that in the near future.
You know, it's closing in on a year since diagnosis. And I'm almost as blissfully stumbling through my boring life as I was before the diagnosis. Still waiting a little for another shoe to drop, but so much less now than even a few months ago. I hope we all keep doing great. -
Mary, Are you feeling OK after the dental work?
PJ, I'm elated. Everything I am reading is very good. It was on the national news last night -- said it was the biggest news in bc in twenty years. Someone on another thread said she read that it changed our prognosis from poor to good. -
ALso, I am just guessing, but I bet they hurry up and make it available to all HER2 positives. That appears to be what they did when they found it benefitted those with stage 4.
-
Good Morning Ladies.
Past my 1 year mark last week! Wow, what a year it has been! Just planned a great trip with all the guys. They'll be here for just 2 weeks, but we'll make the most of it. My exercise routine is going good. I still have joint pain- prolly from the arimidex, but if I move daily, it is not as bad. Plus, walking to the refrigerator on a regular basis adds a few miles!!Good to hear from all of you. I don't read boards everyday now that I have to be out of the house earlier but I'm glad most things are going well for us. I'll have to visit Mary if she heads south! To cold up here... it's April!!! and 40'S!! What's with that after 80 a week ago! Renee -
Two weeks and still no cigerette. And so far no weight gain. I have been forcing myself to walk and watch what I eat. Now the next step is trying to take off all this chemo weight. I haven't weighed this much since I was pregnant and that was 13 years ago.
I still have this sparse peach fuzz which is about 1/2 inch long but it is so sparse - it is really pathectic looking. Doesn't seem to be growing as fast as the last time and I am getting very impatient. I'm tired of being the bald lady.
Took the day off yesterday and cleaned all the garden areas. Talk about being sore - I've used muscles I haven't used in forever. I like to call it garden squats - what a workout. It felt good though like I was part of the human race again.
Hope you are all doing well. Take care. Lots of hugs,
Caroline -
Caroline, Congrats on the 2 weeks. I'm very impressed. I'm going to try to quit (again) this weekend. I'm with you on the gardening. It's a good workout. Looks like I'll spend my weekend pulling weeds (and admiring my tomato plants, which are flowering).
Mary, do I remember right that you are HER2 positive? Any chance of Herceptin if you are?
Janie, hope you're feeling OK. I go in tomorrow for an ultrasound of a cyst I've had for years. I just want to make sure it's not changed or really wasn't a cyst or something.
Take care -
Hi girls, Have been busy but watching the boards. My grandson Bailey and I are off to Phoenix tomorrow. Renee this weather sucks but I will be in sunny, warm weather tomorrow. No rain, wind cold and clouds for a few days for me. Janie I am happy for the hercept. news. I have no ins. now wouldn't ya know, a day late and a dollar short. I will check into it as soon as I can. I will check in with yas while in Phx. so behave and later girls, Hugs, Mary
-
I posted twice in the last day or two and neither came through. I guess its out there in cyberland. Good luck PJ.Mary
-
Out out damn lump. results of my ultrasound: the radiologist thinks i should have it out. it hasn't gotten any bigger, but he doesn't think it's a cyst. he thinks it's solid. he says it doesn't look malignant or anything. but he said if i were his wife, he'd just tell me to get rid of the thing. and they'll biopsy it to make sure. handily, they should be able to do it up at the clinic while they've already got me knocked out for my port removal. so if the scheduling works out, it'll be next wednesday. i'll be glad to be rid of it.
-
Mary- soak up enough sun for me too!
Paula, will be thinking of you and praying for you on Wednesday!
How you doing Janie?
Renee
