I'm writing this for my wife (CoyRita) who is now recovering in the hospital from a bilateral masectemy performed on friday.  The 4 hour surgery went well and the sentinel nodes were negative on the side with the tumor.  Hopefully, the cancer is now gone, but she will be undergoing chemo as she is HER2+.  I don't think she will have to have ratiation and does have expanders in place now for reconstruction.  She is really afraid of the upcoming chemo treatments, as she already experiences a lot of aches and pains in her joints, has to wear a CPAP at night for her central apnea and is allergic to several drugs.  She is overweight and can't exsercise a lot because of a bad toe.  Your discussion threads have helped both of us prepare for the surgery and her upcoming treatments, as she doesn't feel like she is the only one out there facing these challenges.  We'll keep up on these discussions as she progresses through her treatments, but for now.....HAPPY EASTER!!!!!

    So glad to hear that the surgery went well.  I have the same type of cancer, and I did make it through the chemo ok.  It was hard, as I, too, am overweight and had a much higher dosage of chemo because of that.  But. . . . and this is the only GOOD thing about the chemo. . . . all my horrible arthritis symptoms disappeared during chemo!!!!!!  For the first time in a million years, I was pain free as far as arthritis goes.  They give you steroids with it, and that is what takes the arthritis away for a while.  Very disappointing when it gradually comes back.

    Make sure you have some stool softeners, etc.  No one told me that after surgery, it is VERY important!!!!!  Take them right away and don't wait 6 days like I did!  I was NOT a happy camper!

    I am so happy for you that surgery went well and her sentinel nodes were negative! Like so many wonderful women here said to me, Chemo is hard but its do-able.

    As her nodes are clear.. your dear , dear wife should not need rads! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!

    Chemo is doable... I did not have the joint pain bad like others.. I had a few aches here and there.. but did just fine. ANYTHING she will want to learn or ask.. she will find it here!
