Positive Non-Sentinel Lymph Node
My pathology report indicated no positive sentinel nodes. However, one non-sentinel node was positive. Has anyone ever had this occur?
Thanks,
Scarlett

Yep, I had Intramammary Lymph Nodes show positive. There is quite a controversary on the matter. Some sites say that automatically makes you a stage II, others a stage III ! Check out the "Am I a Stage II or II" thread and you'll see what I mean. Mine got taken out as part of my breast tissue so we don't know how to handle it. Was your's taken with breast tisse as well?

Yes, they discovered it in pathology. There were 2 nodes in the breast tissue-one positive.
I had neo-adjuvent chemo as tumor close to chest wall. Waiting to see oncologist and am scheduled for radiation.

scarlet ...
So this lymph node was discovered AFTER your chemo?
It sounds like an intramammary lymph node like Barbe mentioned.....
Sometimes they can be removed with the breast tissue and sometimes they can not. So the onc's rely on the chemo and rads to eliminate it.
With the newest staging systems I have read that an intramammary lymph node is Stage 3

I HAVE to get a second opinion then, I haven't even seen an oncologist! My surgeon figured once everything was out it was over! The "tumour board" agreed with him, but I believe you guys more!

My concern is the surgeon being able to FIND a lymph node. I had full axillary dissection 9 years ago (22 clean nodes). The surgeon is going to send in the dye and tracers and hope to locate a remaining lymph node or two to remove during the mastectomy surgery. I suspect I'm borderline for the chemo question based on what is known to date (pathology from core needle and mammogram pics). Oncologist consult was very "non committal". Onco type testing (still learning the newest lingo) is almost definitely in my future.
It's not exactly a precise science, is it? Yes, second (and sometimes THIRD) opinions can be quite enlightening. Or confusing.

I see my oncologist next week. I am going to ask him what kind of node it was. I had dose dense chemo neoadjuvent 4AC 4 Taxol. The tumors did shrink. I am also triple negative. No one mentioned intramammary. My surgeon said some women have more nodes than others. Will keep you posted
