gallstone/liver ultrasound
I'm having an ultrasound of my gallbladder and liver tomorrow morning and would like some informantion before I go. I had a CT scan 6 months ago that showed gallstones (at that time, I had no symptoms) Within the last 2 weeks, I have been feeling pressure under my right ribs and in my abdomen. Went to PCP and he thinks gallbladder. I think that my liver is enlarged (no confirmation, just a gut feeling - no pun intended). Would an abnormal liver or masses whatever you may call it, show up on ultrasound? I tried to Google, but gave up! What has been anyone's experience on this? Thanks for the help everyone!
Gentle Hugs,
Trish

Hi, Trish, I had an abdominal ultrasound in Nov. of 2007. It definitely showed that my liver was enlarged and if any lesions were present they would have shown, too, but fortunately the doctor told me there no lesions. Yes, ultrasounds can show a mass or a lesion. Hope that helps!! God bless you, Kathy

Kathy,
Yes it does. I like to "peak" at my tests/scans even though the techs can't say anything. I was just curious as if u/s could on a liver or not. So happy for you that yours found no lesions. Did they come back to you on the reason your liver was enlarged? (if you don't mind my asking.)
Blessing to you,
Trish

Dear Trish, Yes, my liver enlargement was partly due to medications and also being overweight. I lost 20 lbs in the meantime and the next ultrasound showed a dramatic improvement. I still need to lose more but I am definitely on the right track. The reason for the ultrasound was an elevation in liver enzymes. Since my weight loss, my enzymes have been normal. I also take aromasin which sometimes can cause liver enzymes to elevate. Good luck to you, too and keep us posted. Kathy

I had this ultrasound and no tumors turned up but I did have a cyst. They knew it was a cyst because it was dark, indicating fluid. I think solid tumors show up light. The kind of discomfort you are describing seems to happen to a lot of us post-be, I've had it for several years. I can't explain it, but it seems to be really common. However, if you've already been diagnosed with gallstones, it seems likely thats the culprit here.
When i had my u/s I told the tech that I was anxious because I've had bc and she was a real angel and talked me through everything she saw (which is how I knew the spot was a cyst) and then the radiologist came in and did the same. it doesn't hurt to be up font about your anxieties.

Trish I had an ultrasound and cat scan of my abdomen last year when I was readmitted to the hospital with difficulty breathing and pain - that's how they found the gall stone. A cyst showed up on my liver too but they told me it was normal. It's a year later, and my liver enzymes are still too high so I brought the scan and blood work to a gastroenterologist who said not to worry - the cyst on the liver was normal looking and the elevated liver enzymes weren't that high considering all the meds I still was getting.
Even prior to my mx, I told three different doctors about the pain under my right rib cage and no one paid any attention! My breast surgeon even said, "you don't have cancer in your ribs it would have shown up on your bone scans." as if that were the only possible reason a person could have a pain in their right side. It amazes me how narrow the vision is of some specialists! ANYWAY - I'm scheduled to have my gallbladder removed on July 1st when they reopen my abdomen to repair the hernia. I haven't had serious debilitating pain, but it's always there, and my new and WONDERFUL surgeon says it's best to remove the gallbladder since over time a stone could lead to cancer. I'm worried a teany bit about what he'll find with my liver when he gets in there, but I'm trying not to let these scary thoughts take over my thinking.
I'll be thinking about you Trish and hoping your scans find nothing wrong with your liver. Also - if there's any questions that your PCP doesn't answer well, think about going to see a gastroenterologist. Keep us posted and may God's angels watch over you!

Member, Kathi, Swim,
Thank you so much for sharing your stories! I'm probably being a hypochondriac (sp) about all this as the pain is not bad but it is there. I'm just nervous with every little tweak and twing - it's mind boggling. Of course I don't tell dh about my fears, I spare him that. He had issues when I had my abnormal mammo in 4-07, bx'd it, turned out to be dcis, had to have mast, in path found idc, and then had to have rads because of margins. He don't trust drs! One thing just led to another for him and it was a little (lol) overwhelming for him. But I digress (boy did I roam off topic!) Thanks again for your input and kindness.
Hugs,
Trish

hi there...I too had that pain...I did have my gallbladder removed and it was inflammed and full of sludge..I did feel better afterwards, but for me, my liver had been damaged by CMF Chemo..the methotrexate can be toxic to the liver..in any case, my liver doctor told me that the liver itself has no nerves to indicate pain, but the swelling caused by the liver can cause pain...The ultrasound can show the size of the liver and abnormalities..I also had a CT scan...of course, the gold standard is a liver biopsy...but they have to have cause to do that...good luck!!

Wow! How ironic to come across this thread at this time. I've been having a lot of discomfort under my ribcage on the right side. Also, burning under my breastbone. I immediately thought the worst and assumed it was liver mets. The more research I've done, the more I'm convinced it's my gallbladder. It hurts after I've had a big meal. Rich, fatty meals are the worst! I'm seeing my onc on Friday. I'm sure she'll send me for an ultrasound to confirm my self-diagnosis!

Lisa, Portia,
Thanks for your input. I just got back from the ultra sound and I had a great tech. Couldn't "tell" me anything, but yep it's a gall stone! She also said it looked like my gallbladder was distended. Liver looked unremarkable on the screen. Now to wait for the official report and findings from my pcp.
Thanks again for all of your thoughts and prayers!
Hugs,
Trish

My husband and I have been freaking out for the past couple of days. I have been experiencing a dull pain (for a little over 1 week) that comes and goes under my right ribs. I had hepatitis B over 7 years ago (I am not chronic, it was an acute attack), and am always worried about my liver. Now after reading online about liver mets, I am truly scared. I had my blood drawen today, but won't know the results until end of the week/next week. I will go for an ultrasound tomorrow.
I had stage-1 no nodes, slow growing (Ki-67 less than 5%) oncotype score of 14. I just had surgery in march to remove everything (went bilateral), and a revision at the end of July (capuslar contraction / mound revision). I hope this is just some random pain...but am very scared. My PCP claims my liver is normal after the exam today, but I am not sure how acurate this is.

I just had my ultrasound this morning. The tech told my husband and I not to worry. The results came back with nothing (same cyst I've had since the CT with no change). The only question now is, where is this abdominal pain coming from?
Blood tests should be in tomorrow.

Chicago..nothing showed up on my ultrasound
either, but my gallbladder was ugly..they didn't
know til they took it out..

Golly am I glad to read this I have been thinking mets (for no good reason) except that I had BC !
I have had a pain/discomfort on my right side, rib cage area. I told my BS last week and she said "it's probably your gallbladder" I think she's right but I had it checked a few months ago with u/s and it was negative for stones. She also said it could be from radiation to that side some times it makes the ribs hurt. I wish it would just go away, and stop making me worry. I guess I will have to have it investigated a little more.
Lisa how have you been feeling?
-
My husband has gallstones. Everytime he has a scan they note that but they've never really caused him big problems so he's left well enough alone.
What I've read that if you eat an order of fries and have pain that's an indication that's the problem.
-
Linda, I have been feeling soooooo much better after my gallbladder was removed..
a whole new world...
-
Gosh, I am glad this thread has been started. THe radiologist warned me of that kind of side pain. I am just about two months out since the last frygirl day. I suppose if it doesn't go away in a couple of weeks, I will have it investigated. IRGH. Worry stress!

This thread is reassuring to me. On Tuesday I went to urgent care because I had pain in my chest and back, and that can be heart attack symptoms. After a million other tests, they sent me for an ultrasound that found about 15 gallstones. I was so relieved to hear that it wasn't my heart, I didn't think to ask any other questions. Only afterwards did I start worrying about liver mets.
When they do an ultrasound for gall bladder problems, is it common to include the liver? I have an appointment with my onc for next wed., and I'm trying not to spend all my time between now and then thinking I've got mets.
Lis - when you get home, we have to talk about gall bladder removal - with 15 gallstones, I don't think I'll have a choice about surgery. -
When I was first dx with bc they made me do a lot of test because my liver function tests were bad. It turned out it was because I had "silent" gallstones. My BS said after the surgeries I need to get it out. Well after all the surgeries I needed I was in no mood to have another one for a "silent" problem. Well Thanksgiving it decided to not be silent and I ended up in the hospital on morphine and pancreatitis because I put it off too long. I had to be on IV antibiotics for 3 days before they could do my surgery and get it out. He said one was the size of a ping pong ball. I had more incisions too. So don't wait.........if you have them....get it out!
