Insurance payment for prophlactic mastx, restoration?
I'm 5 cm (T3) Invasive lobular, hormone receptive, strong family history. I'm having a lumpectomy with lymph node dissection next week. Then chemo and finally a bilateral mastx and DIEP restoration. Does anyone have a similar situation and can you tell me your experience with insurance payment for removing and restoring the breast without cancer?
Also how long (in weeks, or months) you had chemo?

Hi,
I had a rb mastectomy with my original cancer diagnosis, then almost exactly one year later had a lb proph and bilateral DIEP. There was never a question from my insurance company, they paid for everything, including the phase 2 and 3 surgeries.
I had chemo for 18 weeks...6 treatments of TC, 3 weeks apart. I also had to have 30 radiation treatments after my chemo. My plastic surgeon had me wait 5 months after radiation to do the DIEP. It's been over a year since the DIEP and over 2 years since diagnosis..all is well!
Best of luck!

Hi, foobs ~ Just found this post (after answering your more recent one), so thought I'd bump it for you. FYI I've noticed that Friday night is one of the worst times to post and have your question get buried because the boards aren't as active then.
Re. chemo, I had 4 txs of TC 3 weeks apart. Depending on your hormone & Her2 stats and if its right for you, TC (Taxotere & Cytoxin) is the newest regimen for bc. Not all oncs are using it, but research shows that it's extremely effective and doesn't pose the risk of heart-related SE's that Adriamycin can.
As far as insurance covering prophylactic bi-lat mast., I didn't have that, but I don't believe I've seen anyone here say it was denied by their insurance company. But hopefully, you'll get some additional input now. Take care ~ Deanna

My insurance covered mastectomy, then a reduction on left side and reconstruction on right side.

spar2,
So sorry to not answer you right away. Thanks for your input. It helps. I, too have not seen much discussion about insurance not paying, We're all so worried about everything else probably. I hope you're happy with the outcome of your surgery.

Deanna,
Here I am on Fri night posting again. ha And only just now found your post. sorry!
I had lumpectomy last Friday and my tumor was not 5 cm that it measured on MRI,, but 3 cm! We think its responded to my being off HRT.. But unfortunately I had 8 of 12 nodes positive. I don't know if TC would be appropriate for me because of this. But thanks, I'll look at it. Met with Oncologist today and he suggests aggressive chemo because of LN. I have a few weeks to research/decide.. What kind of cancer do you have?
