Can someone describe hip arthritis?
Hello ladies and Happy Friday! I haven't been here much lately, but I sincerely hope everyone is doing very well and having a nice start-up of Spring! Sorry-- I will try to log on more and keep up with all my lovely friends here! Hugs to all of you and special prayers for those of you having difficulties.
I have been having some pain in my hips, mostly the left one, but sometimes they both hurt. I know they're carrying around way too much weight, so I guess it's logical that they are crying out for help! My pain is a stinging-like pain, comes and goes from day to day, mild to moderate, and strangely it doesn't hurt so much when I am moving around and walking. The pain is most noticeable when I get out of bed in the morning or when I get up out of a chair and just start moving around. (I have a desk job at a computer all day-- that's a body-killer!) Does this sound like hip arthritis? A couple of years ago, x-rays revealed that I have arthritis in my back and shoulder, but I don't have much problem with pain in those areas. Generally, I have found that if I keep moving, I don't hurt much-- it's when I stop and start again that the pain comes. I really don't feel that this is serious like bone mets, and needless to say, I so dread going to the doctor for this and probably won't until it gets unbearable.
Thanks in advance for the info!

Gran - It could be arthritis. I've got DJD in my spine and neck, but it's more often my hips that do me in when I've been sitting these days. I think it's from the AIs., as I don't think I have any arthritis in my hips either, although I was dxed with bursitis in left hips years ago and that's the one that bothers me the most. I feel like Grandpa McCoy or Festus when I get up from the sofa!! I certainly don't know if it's mets, but I bet it isn't.

I have the same thing in my left hip. Sometimes I get a little pain in the right but mostly it is the left. I just assumed it was arthritis. Same symptoms as you. When I get up from sitting or laying about, it is really painful until I start moving around. I know I have quite a bit of arthritis and spinal stenosis (including cervical).
The problem is I have a foot wound and the podiatrist wants me to wear this special shoe that takes the weight off of the bottom of my right foot. Thirty minutes of walking around in that shoe and my left hip hurts so much. What's a girl to do?
-
Hi ladies and thanks for your help.
Susan, I know what you mean about the Grandpa McCoy/Festus effect... I often wish I was as spry as Granny Clampitt! Sorry to hear of your bursitis-- no fun, I'm sure.
Kathleen, I hope your foot/hip feels better soon. I have pain in my right foot too, due to plantar fascitis. The only thing that makes that feel better (besides cortisone injections) is to stand on a cold tile floor! How was your spinal stenosis diagnosed? X-rays or MRIs?
My mom, who is 81, says she almost never ever has aches and pains. She is a 5 feet 1, weighs about 115 and thinks she is fat (not!) and is always full of energy. My dad is 80 and gets up at 5 am to work out at the local fitness center and looks 60. What's up with me and my 52-yr-old aching, ancient body?? I know-- overweight and outta shape, but I ached even when I was much younger, fitter, and slim.
I think we all need to just pack up and go to a tropical island and BAKE for a while! And have someone bring us cold drinks and key lime pie!
-
Blue - That's so funny about the floor!! When my feet ache and burn so in the night that I can't stand it, I hobble downstairs to stand on the cold tile, too!!
I have looked longingly at the freezer at times, but figured I didn't need frost bite on top of the pains!!
And, OMG, I had cortisone in my shoulder years ago and SWORE I would never let anyone do that to me again...until my hip was so bad awhile back, that I let a good-looking, sweet-talking PA give me another one. Sad to say the second didn't work any better than the first.
But, I can't imagine anyone giving me one for the plantar fascitis!! Just the thought of a needle in my arch gives me the shudders!! I did get some relief from the pricey orthodics, but I get so tired of wearing lttle old lady shoes all the time. Sigh...
-
Oh wow, Susan, I hadn't thought of the freezer...
I guess we're the Cold Tile Huddlers Association, right?
Sorry to hear the cortisone shots didn't work for you. I have had a total of 5 in the bottom of my feet, when I was much younger. It was quite an experience, and I'm not sure if I'm tough enough to do that now. Even after bc! That cold tile will have to do for now!
I know what you mean about the old lady shoes. I had some that my sons made fun of incessantly-- I got a little weary of them myself, so I took them to Goodwill. Have you ever tried Crocs? Honestly, those ugly things feel better on my feet than any other shoe I've got!
-
Hmmmm. My daughter bought me some of the first Crocs out. They were OK, but nothing I'd want to wear daily. But, that's a good idea, 'cuz now they have so many different styles.
I have to say, since I've been on Aromasin these past 6 weeks, my feet have really been ouchy! Don't think the Arimidex was so hard on my tootsies, for some reason.
We may be in trouble when summer comes...it'll be hard to find cold tiles then!
-
Gee, sorry the Crocs didn't work for you. I know there is also a Crocs Rx which are made especially for folks with foot problems, but a lot pricier. I bought mine half price at the end of last summer-- they are a very bright orange color-- wore them to work and the guys I work with horse-laughed me! They said they looked like I had Circus Peanuts (the candy) on my feet! I hope you get some relief for your tootsies really soon-- and I was looking forward to summer, but not now-- warm tiles won't help us!
I know-- we could go to the tile store, buy one and stick it in the freezer for future reference!

Hello ladies,
Could your foot problems be neuropathy? I think mine is from the radiation that I had. I also have bursitis in my right hip along with some arthritis in that joint. There is a large tendon that stretches across the leg from the hip to the knee called the tronchataria (hope I spelled it right). The ortho doc said I have tronchataris bursitis. There is also a muscle just below the hip joint that can get inflamed. I always wonder with all the body parts we have, how can a doc just say that the problem is with a specific bone, muscle, etc. The ortho doc did do exrays and when my tumor markers flared up, the oncologist sent me to a rheumatologist to see if any of my arthritis was rheumatoid. He said no, but did confirm the arthritis in my hips. I sometimes use lidoderm patches for the pain.
God bless!

I took an 8-session course on arthritis at my local hospital. I was on a cane at that point! I learned that "motion is lotion". As long as you keep moving, you get the right fluids to the joint. That's why you're so sore when you get up. I take a lot of meds for my arthritis and pain, but it's the only way I can function. I also have Fibromyalgia, so my plate is pretty full.
-
Huh, meant to add for you sore feet ladies. Have you tried Lyrica or Neurontin? They are for peripheral neuropathy and may do wonders!
-
Bluewillow - I am with you - lets hit a beach somewhere and bake it out. BTW is that your grandchild in your avatar because he is a cutie-putootie. I know what you mean about 'older' folks. We have a family friend that, like your Mom, is tiny, 82 and runs around like the Energizer Bunny. Meantime, I am 20 years younger and can't get my back straight for several minutes after sitting for any time
My stenosis was diagnosed via an MRI. I had no idea. I get a new pain and keep on going. I have an aunt who sees a doctor for every little twinge. I mark them all up to getting old. The reason I had the MRI is because I could barely move my neck and was having backaches.
When they did the bone scan after BC diagnosis it light up like a Christmas tree for arthritis.
Barbe - Poor thing, you have really been through the wringer. I know there are days that you have, like me, that questions God with "how many more tests do I have to pass to learn whatever it is you want me to learn." My prayers are with you to continue to give you strength. God Bless.
-
Blue - I love the "circus peanuts"!! Brahahahah! And the frozen tile makes me shiver with deight! My mom has neuropathy, and has numb, but burning feet. I just have achy and burning feet, so I don't know if it's neuropathy or just hot feet!
Ye Gods, ladies - we're a sorry bunch! We should enter a marathon together and wet our pants laughing at all the hobbling and limping! And, we could keep busy discussiing our constipation and gas problems!! This definitely is a forum for the riper fruit among us!
-
All of you.....me included never cease to crack me up !!!! This is why we will all grow old together....creaky and cracky and crotchety but old.....and laughing between every moan and groan.
Im thinking willow....that your pain does sound more like arthritis or something in that family....my understanding is the dreaded pain of mets doesnt go away.....and what barbe said about motion and lotion is SO true.....my post treatment showed some areas of arthritis in both knees and my lower spine but so long as I trudge onward every day it really doesnt bother me at all.....now, sometimes at the end of my shift it cries out vehemently.....how bout checking into one of the NSAIDS with your doc I have a prescription for Nabumetone which I can take twice a day and I only do it for a week or two when things are really bothersome, the minute I get it in my system I can tell cause the pain is hard to find. I actually used to work in my Crocs.....very much turned out to be NOT a good thing for the feet......
We are delightfully pathetic.......
*waves and big hugs* to my gas girl........
Love you all.....

"My gas girl"?? I don't believe anyone has ever called me that before!
On a different note, I am watching the memorial service for the victims of the Binghamton massacre. How do these things happen?
My niece was on duty at the ER in Binghamton, her husband is a trooper and was one of the first responders. I cannot imagine how one gets over something like this.
My heart breaks for all touched by this unthinkable tragedy.

Good evening wonderful ladies!
You all have given me some really great information, and some great laughs to go along with my aches and miseries! I love you all-- reading here has been the bright spot of my day!!
Susan B, it could very well be neuropathy-- I have thought of that and even tho I have had the plantar fascitis dx for a long time, in the back of my mind is the thought that there is "something different" about this foot pain, esp. with the burning and tingling, all the while thinking all the nearby parts are tied in together.
Barbe, I have read some about Lyrica and fibromyalgia (sorry you have to deal with that!), wondering if that could be what's going on with me. I'm curious, are there better tests now to dx fibro? My family dr. told me once that there was really no way to diagnose it.
Kathleen, that is my darling grandson Mason in my avatar. He is 14 months old now, but that's still one of my favorite pics. I'll try to get some recent ones on here.
Susan, we are a sorry bunch, but aren't we having fun at it!! Below is a photo of my "circus peanuts", just for you!
Jan, you said it well, we are delightfully pathetic!
Take care and hugs to all!

Just wondering if there are any studies that show a correlation between chemotherapy drugs (adriamycin, cytoxin, tamoxiphen etc) and an earlier onset of arthritis. At age 55, I have developed arthritis in knees and hip, and fingers, and no one else among my relatives, ever had arthritis so young (or breast cancer). I had breast cancer 5 years ago. I have always been active and on a healthy diet.
-
Lucy, you have posted an excellent question! I wonder the same thing, and darn it, forgot to ask that question at my check-up yesterday. I have another one tomorrow with my rad onc-- I'll ask and let you know what I find out. And hopefully someone here in the know will respond. Thanks and take care!
-
Thanks Bluewillow and if I find out anything more about this, I'll post again.

Can I pop in here and maybe answer some questions that have arisen on this thread? I'm not an expert by any means but....
1. Sore and burning feet are likely due to plantar fasciitis, and one possible solution is to go to an accredited foot care centre (or a podiatrist) and be properly measured for orthotics. Both my sister and I suffered from this condition (yes, hopping across the floor to the bathroom first thing in the morning, especially!!), and the orthotics cleared up the problem within a few weeks.
2. Any drug that reduces or eliminates the estrogen will, in many cases, cause arthritis-like symptoms. I've been told that if one is likely to develop arthritis late in life, taking tamox or an AI just speeds up the process. Likewise, carpal tunnel syndrome. It isn't nice, and it certainly isn't natural, but what is one to do, with the possible recurrence of cancer hanging over one's head?? We're "aging" at a far greater rate than normal, and I just hate it.

i'm not sure about the arthritis thing but my orthopedist told me my pain (left hip) was bursitis and was caused by constantly shifting my weight to my left side (I did that because of pain in rt. knee and swelling of tendonitis in my rt. foot as well as mild plantar fashitis). So he gave me a cortisone shot and it helped for a while (not too sore at the moment) but my wt. gain on Aromasin (50 lbs.) is causing me more problems as my knees and ankles can't take it, so, I expect to have more bursitis (inflammation of the bursa which is a fluid filled area which keeps your hip joints moving without pain) in the future. getting old is really the pits but worse when we have to take meds whose full side-effects still aren't determined. So, are we the guinia pigs?

oh yuch!! just what I want more arthritis...I had total hip replacement on my right hip last year. After fighting the surgery for 5 years I caved in. Trust me, you will know how bad it is when you cannot walk and you are up all night with pain shooting down from your hip to your toes.
well that was last year and this year bc...oh goody...I am so not considering chemo and all it's se's have to offer...sometimes I think you are just better to off eat more healthy and roll the dice

Hi
A newbie to this thread as I usually hang out on the Stage 4 site. I just wanted to add my bit about the arthritic hips. I have arthritis in my right hip - some days good, others, not so good. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I had a bone scan to make sure I didn't have mets in the hip (have mets in the ribs). "Fortunately" it was arthritis! I take an anti-inflammatory when it becomes really painful.A couple of years ago, my frozen shoulder became unbearable, so I had cortisone jabs. The doctor and onc are against having it too often as it damages/weakens the cartilage, or something to that effect. My onc suggested acupunture. Did it 3 times and voila, the pain in the shoulder is so much better. Maybe, it would help with the hip. Good luck.
Iilacplane, I have been on Aromasin for the last 5 years, come June, and will be doing another 5, as some trial results reckon it drops the recurrence rate by about 30%. To date, I have gained 12.5kg's, so I wonder what the next 5 years will bring! Try to live with the SE's, aching bones, etc and generally feeling 100 years old!!!!!
Burning feet: I know the feeling only too well, cold tiles, here I come. When I complained about it to the onc she did a test for diabetes, as apparently, that is one of the symptons. Fortunately, it came back negative. I thought maybe it was a "left over" from the Xeloda which I was last on a couple of years back. Or, is it the Aromasin? Or, is it the Zometa? Or, is all the crap going to my feet?! At the moment, I think the brain is null and void!
Ladies, sorry, about the long winded post.
Take care and cyberhugs
