L.A TV Station doing a story on Thermography

Options

Hi Ladies

I am working on a story about the value of thermography, and would love to hear from those of you in the Los Angeles area  who've had experience with it, or would like to try it..

The story is inspired by the recent study showing a possible  increased risk of complication form mammorgrams in young women who are BRCA positive.

We are exploring whether there are alternate forms of imaging that are safe and effective.  Seems like most doctors are not impressed by thermography-- and much prefer mammograms.

 Your thoughts?

But many doc's ARE impressed by MRI (the only reason they are not used is because of cost - so there is already a better way of approaching breast imaging...I think you need to be approved to approach  the moderators before you can solicit here...

Oh how I wish I lived in LA!  I am so sick of having my breasts smashed I could throw up.  You cannot convince me that doing that to your body is healthy and does not cause problems.  The only reason many places do not switch to thermography is because they have the expensive mammogram machine and must use it to pay for it!  I know there are many that don't think it works as well, I think the answer is to use 2 or 3 different diagnostic tools.  Good luck on your story, maybe you can get the word out.  Just a note to Deirdre- I don't think Gerri is soliciting anything, and MRI and thermography are two different things.  Tami

Idaho:  Thermography will never be able to take the place of other diagnostic tools because it can only show areas which are hotter than usual (the theory being that before a tumour has developed, there is increased blood flow to the area.)  But that heat could be from other causes.

Followup mammos or u/s or MRI would be needed to show a clearer picture, and if the tumour had not yet developed, these dx's would show nothing.  So what would be the next step?  I guess one would have to have many, many thermo scans to check if the area shows to be hotter or more extensive, over several years, to see if a tumour has developed after all. And then you'd still need to have the other dx tests to confirm.

Thermography went through extensive testing at bc centres in North America during the 70's and 80's to determine its effectiveness.  Most of those centres stop using it.

I think the real reason docs don't like it is because it provides no definitive answers, and not because bc centres have already invested in mammo machines -- but JMHO!

    Cheers, Linda

I've used thermography and it showed my disease clearly.  Also look at the thread I bump up. It shows this tools is back in research trials right now. (2009) I think it will be used more in the future. The problems is you can charge $2500+ for mammo and you can have this done for $150.

Juat a thought -- if it were a case of thermography being more cost-effective than, and equally as effective as, mammography, wouldn't your U.S. insurance companies be insisting on it?  I would suggest that in countries with universal health care such as Canada and the U.K., this would indeed be the case.  But it isn't.

I think there are many uses for thermography.  Just doesn't seem as though it's especially good (at least not yet), for diagnosing breast cancer.  Flalady, I'm interested to know if thermography was the only method used for your diagnosis.

I think what Deirdre meant was that you need to be approved by the moderators to solicit the membership for their responses/opinions. And she's right. One should report this post as a violation of the terms of service until "NewsProducer" goes through the proper channels. (harhar)

This is how I found my bc but the doctor's were not happy until they smashed my bc three for four times in the mammo machine. I had a 10cm lump they could not see with the mammo.  After my mammo it took me three weeks to get into chemo and my tumor grow very aggressive in this time because of the damage to the smashing.

Actual it is being used at my local research hospital to evaluate lumps found with ultra sound/mammo too see if they have blood supply without having to do unnecessary biopsies. Something like 60% of all biopsies do not find cancer but a fluid cystic.

As for the cost...doctor will not change out a $500,000+ piece of machine (digital mammo) until it has been paid off and earned it's keep.  Than you move to the next cheapest technology.

I apologize if my post offended anyone.   I read the community rules, and believe I am in compliance.

That said-- I want you to know that am here because I believe I am getting biased information on both sides of the equation.  Thermography providers say they have patients standing line to tell me how their lives were saved via that technology.  Many Breast Cancer specialists say it has no value.

I'd like to produce a story that does have value.  So I am here to learn what the "real" experts (patients) have to say, and to make sure that I don't overlook any significant issues.

    With gratitude,

ANYTHING, that helps and brings attention to breast cancer treatment, in my mind, is wonderful, so I personally thank you for doing what you are doing.

NewsProducer, if you contact the moderators with your request, they may allow you to ask the BC.org members.  Please re-read the terms of service.  While I am sure that your intentions are honorable, BC.org is not meant to be used in this way without moderator permission. Jeesh.

If you look at some of the postings, you will see that the moderators DO post requests for interviews, etc.

    Thank you for your consideration.
