Herceptin and a cough?
I've had this cough for about 10 days now - it just won't go away. I don't feel sick - just more tired than usual. No sore throat - no running nose - no fever - just the cough. Nothing infected looking - a little yellow mucus (sorry to sound so gross). The cough is deep - not just in my throat - not just a tickle. I see my oncologist on Monday for my next infusion - hopefully it's gone by then, otherwise I'll be a bit worried. It's the first time I've been sick since last year (since this mess started). I need to get better before my colonoscopy on April 21st and my foob repair on May 6th.......but I feel so sluggish and tired - somehow I just don't think my body is healing the way it used to. Did anyone else ever notice that Herceptin makes you heal slower when sick? Oh and of course - way way deep down inside - a cough like this makes me worry about mets (who doesn't worry about mets?) but I'm being reasonable and not paying attention to that fearful monster just right now.

I'm not sure....but I would think Herceptin would slow down the healing process to some degree. It sounds to me you might be a little rundown...or bronchitis?
-
Thanks Lexi - maybe bronchitis - my lungs have always been so strong, until I was brought low with that staph infection - this is the first real "test" of them since then, so I shouldn't be surprised that it's taking so long. I haven't even gone swimming since the cough started - too tired and afraid of making it worse, sigh.
-
Hi Swim - I've been generally healthy through Herceptin, but I did get a sinus infection about 6 weeks ago, and it was a doozie. I totally lost my voice, ran a low grade fever for about a week, coughed, and felt like crap. I finally went to Urgent Care and got some antibiotics, then I felt better a few days later.
Like Lexi said, yours sounds like it might be an infection of some sort, especially since there's yellow mucus. I don't think a mets cough is like yours.
Get it checked out if you don't feel better. You don't want to miss out on the good time of a colonoscopy! (I had mine a few weeks ago, and it wasn't that bad. Think of it as a "cleanse.")
-
Thanks Sue - I'm glad you got the antibiotics and feel better now. I have the next week off from work (spring break) so I plan on sleeping late - hopefully my cough will end and my energy level will increase. On top of that - one of my molars chipped in half - I'll be seeing the dentist next week getting a crown. My taste buds are off - and now I can't chew on one side of my mouth. I'm a bit depressed too - nothing to look forward to except more doctors, more surgery and no vacation plans until the end of August, sigh. Wish I could just sail away right now on a cruise that returns me to my younger healthier self and carefree time of life.

Hi there Swimangel,
I was on herceptin for a year - just finished Feb 27 - and had a cough that developed when I finished the Taxol/Herceptin combo and started receiving just the herceptin every three weeks. It would usually come on about 5 days after my infusion and taper off after a couple weeks, then it would be time to get another treatment. It was a deep, forced cough like you describe. At one point there was fluid in my lungs. I also had a low ejection fraction at that time so they thought it could possibly be my heart.
When it first started happening I would feel extremely tired and I had gained about 3 pounds of water weight in a few days. It was tough to go up a flight of stairs I was so tired. The more I did, the more I would cough. I know that Herceptin can effect both your lungs and your heart. I went to a cardiologist to oversee it all. They started giving me a MUGA every 2 months. I guess the edema, fatique and pressured cough can be a sign of congestive heart failure.
I started taking CoQ10 and Salmon Oil and by the end of my treatments my MUGA ejection fraction went up from 56% to 72%! They also started giving my infusions over an hour and a half instead of a half hour to see if that helped. The cough got better and by the end of the treatment I wasn't getting it anymore.
So, I would suggest that you mention it to your oncologist and make sure that you have your MUGAs done at least every three months. Keep track of when the cough occurs. If you get really, unusually tired and have any swelling in your legs or feet it would probably be a good idea to get hold of a cardiologist - Just in case! As long as my ejection fraction stayed above 50% my oncologist didn't seem too concerned but the cardiologist had a different take on the situation. I will be thinking of you - keep me posted! Pam
-
Oh Swim, ditto ALL you said!!! A big chunk of my molar cracked off right after chemo, so I had to have a crown - that's what I get for buying the "healthy" Whole Foods corn chips - they're super hard and I paid for it. In more ways than one - crowns are pricey!
If you book that cruise, please send me the name of your travel agent.
-
Pam I was worried a bit about the cough and tiredness being a symptom of something going on with my heart. My last Muga was in February and it was fine - down a bit to 63 from a start of 67 - but I know things can always change. I don't have any swelling in my legs - so that's good news. I'll definitely mention this to my onc on Monday - especially if I don't feel better - and if he brushes it off, I'll be emailing my brother-in-law who's a cardiologist to see what he recommends. I always thought to myself how odd it is that we see so many specialists - but no one ever said we should see a cardiologist, even though these drugs do a number on our hearts!
Sue - you're more than welcome to join me on that magic cruise - IF I could ever find the port it departs from! Actually - I better not look too hard - might end up being like the elf ship that Frodo left on at the end of his adventures with the Ring - was it the end or the beginning?
-
Hi Swimangel,
How are you feeling? Were you able to speak with the onc about your cough? I've been thinking about you!
Pam
-
Hi Pam - thanks for thinking about me, you made my day!
My onc, the mighty speechless wonder, barely listened to my breathing and my heartbeat and was walking out the door when I said to him (for the upteenth time) I'm so very very tired, what's wrong with me? He said, your blood work is perfect, if your cough gets worse, call us. So I summoned up the energy to respond, "It's been getting worse for two weeks now as has my tiredness!" so he scribbles a prescription for Levaquin on his pad and gives it to me. That's it. I've about had it with this man - I have one more treatment of Herceptin left and if he doesn't spend some quality time talking to me, I'm going to ask for all my records and find a new onc! I do think the Levaquin helped my cough a little (it's only been three days), not that the cough was every that bad, but my tiredness is still dragging me down. I'm going to take extra vitamins and drink Gatorade just in case my electrolytes are low again (which happened to me last year and wiped me out.)
This morning I got up early (we're off from school this week) and hustled my bustle to get to an early dentist appointment I've been waiting for since one of my molars broke in half 10 days ago. Fortunately before I left the house, I saw the flash of my answering machine - lucky me, the dentist called in sick and had to cancel. They'll "squeeze" me in tomorrow morning as an "emergency" - but that means I'll be sitting in their office waiting hours until they can fit me in. Sigh.......I just feel like it's one thing after another . To perk myself up I just made an appointment to get my hair colored and cut this afternoon - a little TLC may go a loooong way to boost my spirits and maybe that's all I really need to start feeling better.
Sorry to be such a whiner - how are you feeling these days Pam? Hope the weather is warmer and sunnier than around here!
P.S. Edited to add - I just saw that you've been having a headache and vision changes Pam - I posted a response there - hope you're feeling better! Get thee to an eye-doctor and/or your PCP asap!

I actually ended up with a toxic pulmonary reaction after eight months of Herceptin. Started with a very small pulmonary infiltrate in April, 2008 that showed up on a chest x-ray and then on a chest CT. My oncologist heard very faint crackles in the base of my lung. By June, I was running a temp and went to the ER where they thought it was pneumonia; was admitted for a week. They held the Herceptin then, but it wasn't definitely diagnosed until August after a thorough workup by a pulmonologist. She did a bronchoscopy with a cell wash that showed a inflammatory drug reaction that was then healing. Fortunately, she never had to treat it aggressively with steroids; she just continued to monitor it until last week. And it is now 60% healed per high-resolution CT scan; she signed off of the case now. I often wonder if other women experience pulmonary symptoms which self-heal after Herceptin is finished and which noone wants to pursue for a diagnosis. Good news in the end though!!
-
Thanks so much for sharing your story Janet! It reassures me that I'm not just being a hypocondriac (which does cross my mind sometimes). My cough is better but it's not completely gone - and sometimes, I feel very "sloshy" in there. Still how can I make a case that somethings wrong when my oncologist barely listens to me breathe for more than 1 second and that's through two sweaters. If this cough doesn't get better by next week, I'll be making an appointment with my wonderful PCP who has helped me in the past (when my PS wouldn't acknowledge my abdominal hernia.........my dear PCP sent me for a Cat scan which showed the problems clearly.) I already made an appointment with a cardiologist - but that's not until the end of May - it's for my own peace-of-mind to be sure that the Herceptin didn't cause any damage. Fortunately I have only one more infusion of Herceptin to go (April 22) - so if this problem IS caused by the drug, it'll soon be over, thank God!
-
Hi swimangel -
I have been away for a bit so I am just catching up on what has been going on. I am glad your cough is a bit better and that you have plans to check it out further if it continues. You might try taking 1000 mg salmon oil and 200 mg CoQ10 as well. I started taking both when my heart function decreased and when I finished the Herceptin in February my ejection fraction was better than when I started! It's worth a try! Take care! Pam
-
Just realized I repeated myself from previous post
. Possible chemo brain???? Maybe I better consider jumping on that cruise ship, too! Keep me posted on how you're doing! Pam
-
Thanks Pam - I finished the Levaquin yesterday. Today my cough is returning, more phlemy (is that a word?) than before, sigh. Probably it's just a side-effect of the Herceptin, like the drippy nose..........so I'll get my last infusion next week, then hope the cough goes away. I'll also look into the salmon oil and CoQ10 - thanks for the suggestions!
-
Just wanted to update this thread - to reassure everyone - my cough disappeared two weeks ago (early May) - just prior to my May 6 Stage 2 foob-fixing surgery. And also my drippy nose has nearly dried up too! I had a bunch of scans done this past week - stil waiting to hear about the cat scans - but so far, looks like my bone scan was fine (the technologist knows me and told me her impressions but of course I'll wait for the "official" word from my doctors.) Also my muga scan showed that my heart function is the same as when I started Herceptin - 66% - again, the technologist showed me the results, lol - but I told them to fax everything to my cardiologist who I'll see next week.
I'm still a little fatigued after my surgery on May 6 - but am happy to report I spent about 2 hours shopping in a large mall yesterday! That was a HUGE step forward for me - that I could walk the length of the mall - and also that I could FINALLY buy bras that fit the foob and my natural breast! My sports bras are still the most comfortable - but my new bras (by Warners) are also comfortable and my new Spring tops will look much better!
Thanks again to all you angels for your support!

Glad to find this post. I realize it's a bit old, but I have also endured a cough while taking Herceptin. It's an annoying dry cough, feels difficult to breathe sometimes, and is something that worsened with the progression of treatments (started towards the last several treatments and progressively worsened). Just makes me curious how many others out there have experienced this same SE. Apparently 20-26% of Herceptin patients develop this cough yet Doctors seem to ignore it.
Anyhoo, anybody else out there who has experienced this? And if so, how long after you finished Herceptin did it go away? I just had my last treatment March 4th. I'll be seeing my onc in another week or two, have an echo scheduled around the same time, and will schedule a PET for the following month. I'm really hoping it's an SE and nothing more serious. I had a similar cough when taking the TCH. I dubbed it "chemo cough." Oh the joys!
-
I have been coughing a lot too, and I think it's started after I went on Taxol and Herceptin. It seems like the cough was a little bit less the last 2 days after my last infusion. Today I had my 9th infusion and my cough is back in full speed.
-
Glad I found this thread. My mom ( who is 82 !!) started Taxol and Herceptin about 6 weeks ago.
At the 2nd taxol infusion she had an allergic reaction...so she can't do that one anymore. Today they tried taxotere and a bad reaction to that one too.
The herceptin she has taken every week. She has had a bad, ugly, phlemy cough since day one. whe we ask her onc about it, she says the cough doesn't have anything to do with the treatments. Tho, the onc did want her to go for a chest xray and mom won't go!!!
So, after having allergic reactions to taxol and taxotere, the onc is not sure what she should have my mom do, if anything at all. What are mom's chances being Her2+ ??
hugs and love to you all....hope you are all doing ok

According to this site -- http://doublecheckmd.com/EffectsDetail.do?dname=Herceptin&sid=11893&eid=2078 -- 26% of Herceptin patients develop a cough. This cough can be the result of cardiac toxicity (diminished ejection fraction), pulmonary toxicity (from H or other chemo agents), or may just be a benign side effect.
Candie, I'd advise your mother to go ahead and get her lungs checked to rule out the possibility of pulmonary toxicity or some other pathology. Is she getting an echo or MUGA scan every three months too while on Herceptin?
-
AnneMarie,
thank you so much for your response. I am in the process of getting on touch with her Dr about the echo cause I did read that she should have one every 3 months.
Mom is doing herceptin once a week and will do so for 12 weeks and then once every 3 weeks for 7 months. She will also start arimidex.
I will be in touch.
hugs
-
Thanks for the update, Candie.
Blessings to you and your mother.
I shall look forward to hearing that all is well.
hugs in return,
Anne Marie

I have had a junkie cough that's been going on 4 weeks now. I also had crackle and wheezing and very fatigued. I was on taxol and herceptin for 12 weeks and then in January switched to just herceptin every 3 weeks. I never had a cold or a fever or anything, just suddenly coughing. Was put on 2 different antibiotics but still have the cough. I use an albuterol inhaler, flonase and claritin but still coughing. My Pcp thinks it's due to herceptin. I had a chest xray and they said it was normal but MO said she could hear wheezing and crackle but they would just treat symptoms as I have to stay on herceptin. Very discouraged. Will this ever get better? I see this is a very old thread but surely I'm not the only one on herceptin who developed a cough.
-
I've had a cough since I started chemo. My onc says it's the Herceptin, which causes rhinitis (runny nose) and in turn a post-nasal drip which causes the cough. Oh goodie. A year-long cough.
-
Hello all,
I am being treated for bc mets. I finished the nasty cocktails of Taxo, Herceptin, Pertuzamab Mar 2015 and now being treated with the less intense Herceptin and Pertuzamab every 3- weeks. I did get laryngitis for 10 days during the first 6 nasty treatment period prior to March 2015, I recovered but the "raspy voice" stayed. Then I noticed as I go through the Herceptin and Pertuzamab, I have developed runny nose and mild throat clearing coughing. I use nasal rinse to keep it from getting worse. The allergy season kicked in, the runny nose continued on. The last week of Feb I got my 3rd scan and was told it was "stable" and my onco said it is good as this is one of the goal --keep the cancer under control. On the Ct result note there was something that said "there is a new small nodalirity, possibly from inflammation. Otherwise left lung (where my mets tumor is) is clear;.. No other identified progressive ...No lymph adenopathy..." She also listened to my lungs. At that time my runny nose and cough seemed to feel to be starting to get worse and I had low fever of 99 deg F oral
So I asked my doc about the small nodularity - she said it maybe be because I have colds and cough. It was indeed have gotten to full blown cough. She Rx me antibiotics telling me to take it if my coughing gets worse. I asked if I could take it then but she said, it is not good to take antibiotic when there is "nothing to kill". I was also having acid reflux at the time -- feeling of golf ball going up and down my throat, a bit difficulty swallowing, urge to burp. I told my doc too that the reflux may be contributing to my coughing. She said I could take zantac, zyrtec (switched from Claritin), guafenesin, use nasonex., lots of fluid etc I stopped the guafenesin, it makes me feel lazy- lazier I should say because zyrtec has the same side effect. Those meds helped a bit, I got a little bit better but the tickle in my throat is still lingering -- it is day 30 today since Mar 1 when it became full blown cough and colds triggered also by panic-anxiety, lack of sleep.
30 days of the same tickle - cough is worrisome - I am worried. I called our hotline onco nurse (my doc is on vacay) and she is sending me to my primary doc so my doc herself could listen to my lungs-- check for wheezing/pneumonia. I have not have high fever and a feelling of fatigue. All these are taking place while I have been feeling okay - energy wise; the zantac helped so the acid reflux had eased up. I still go to workout at leat 3x a week, when I workout the tickle goes away. I don't feel it when I eat . It eases up when I drink warm water. The tickle gives me the urge to cough but I can keep myself from coughing. I have an appointment today to see my primary doc. I'll get back to let you all know what she says. I hope it is not bad news. I also want to share that regular acupuncture and herbal supplements (onco doc checked and said okay on the herb suppl) is helping a lot specially the muscle joint/ fatigue, the energy level, anxiety and to some degree my coughing. I feel like my coughing is improving but the improvement seemed very slow and "small increment".
I hope everyone feels better. One day at a time.
Best,
-
Thanks. Reading these thread - make me think it's the Herceptin -- I actually have been in similar situation.

I am on Herceptin every 3 weeks and I developed a chronic cough that drives me crazy. My onc. didn't seem concerned, but I kept pushing her and finally I was referred to a pulmonary doc and CT showed lung infiltrates. Was on antibiotics for two weeks. The lungs seemed to clear up, but the cough persisted. Sometimes I can cough so deep that I almost puke. Also have an ongoing "tickle" in my throat and combined they make my eyes water and my nose run constantly. Fun huh? Pulmonary doc prescribed Flexicort inhaler and it helps some. The only thing that seems to soothe my throat and cough a bit is an herbal tea called "Throat Coat." I've got 3 more treatments and I'm hoping once I'm done with the Herceptin this will clear up.

McWill-
Welcome to BCO! We're sorry this cough is giving you such a hard time, sometimes the side effects can be a real struggle. We're glad you've found a semi-solution, and with only 3 treatments left, you're almost done! Fingers crossed the cough clears up when you're done with the Herceptin!

I am now just getting Herceptin every three weeks after finishing with Taxol 5 weeks ago. I too have a dry cough. I am seeing a cardiologist in a week and a half. I've had two echocardiograms done so far, and they were apparently good. I am in Canada and I have never heard of a MUGA? The whole heart thing re this Herceptin, which I heard is rare, is a bit scary.
