APRIL Rads Anyone?

Happy Friday everyone and welcome to the newcomers! Bette, congratulations on your wedding! Friday now has new meaning for all of us... no treatments for the next 2 days! Yay! Yesterday went pretty good and I even went to "Curve's" afterward and worked out. I am going to keep my bag in my car and go straight there after rads each day. No excuses. I do find that I feel better when I exercise - both physically and mentally. Maybe it will help with the hotflashes too!
That stuff about our skin oozing and peeling doesn't sound too good to me. I remembered to apply the aloe vera gel this morning. I'm not sore yet but going to apply it twice daily anyway.
Susan, I'm glad you're feeling better today. My eyesight is screwed up right now too. I'm going to see an eye doctor after more time passes from my last chemo. Yesterday was 3 weeks for me too.
Bookgirl - I know! I had one large man drawing on me with a marker and doing my tats. I was very uneasy during the whole thing. Thank goodness the rads techs are female!
Have a great day everyone and good luck with TXs. It's Friday!!! Yeah!!!
Love, Elaine
-
I'm freaked out about oozing and peeling also. I don't know why some ladies don't and some do... gotta be something to it.
I had a male draw on me too. For most of my SIM I had a female tech, but then I guess her shift was over and the male tech took over. I felt very uneasy. Why do they do that?!?
Elaine-My onc. keeps telling me to not get glasses, but I don't know how much more I can take of this bad eyesight. The eye strain is giving me headaches!
TGIF!!!!!!!

Happy Friday, and weekend holiday, to all of you who've already started Rads. TGIF will have new meaning now
Carol/Berrypatch, Do you mean the book, Anticancer: A new way of life by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber? I'm reading that too and it's WONDERFUL! He is very inspiring and it really provides some great information. I'm also slow to give up my coffee with milk... A diet book that I'm using, with intermittent success, is The Fast Track Detox Diet by by Ann Louise Gittleman. Her diet is very consistent with the recommendations in Dr. Servan-Schreiber's Anti-Cancer book.
Anyone interested in doing the 11 day fast track detox diet with me?? I could e-mail a daily food log that I typed-up with the required foods . (I need support, as I keep having to restart it...)
This too shall pass. May it pass quickly!
Love and Light,
Cathlene

Hi ,
Cathlene - Yes, that's the book! It is bedside reading right now. I buzzed through it quickly, and now I am reading it more slowly, 1 chapter at a time at night. Yes, I would be interested in a detox diet, but I would wait to start until I am done with rads before I do anything like that. I have enough on my plate for the next month or so! No pop, going back to work, and starting exercise after a long winter holed up in the house! I plan to start walking, even if it is only around the block at first. I'll wait until Jim is home from work, and take my cell phone with me, cause he might have to come and get me! LOL!
Well, I'm not the only one who feels weak as a kitten! I am feeling better today than yesterday, so slowly getting this chemo out of my system....my poor liver....I guess that I am just impatient for feeling good, because I really don't remember what that's like. But I guess that we have all been fighting a monster for 6 months, and we are pretty worn out!
I hope that everyone has a terrific weekend. Lainey, you are right! No rads on weekends, truly days off! 2 more weeks and weekends will be that way for me too! I admired you all winter for working during chemo, I know that I wouldn't have been able to do it. You go girl!
Carol
-
Happy Friday all. 5 down; 28 to go and all is well.
-
Cathlene-I could use to do the 11 day detox!
I wonder if that will keep our energy up during rads, or even help out. Hey it sure can't hurt!
-
Happy Friday! I just had to say it again.
Cathleen, I'd like to check out the 11 day detox diet. I'm not sure if I will do it or not, but would like to check it out. I haven't been so good lately with my eating but have cut a few things from my diet such as diet soda and any aspartame products such as Splenda. When I really want a soda I drink the real thing. Every now and then I just need one! But I'm trying to wean myself off of it for good. I still drink about 2 cups of coffee in the morning and use fatfree half & half.
Carol, I can't wait for the weather to stay consistently warm so I can start walking again. I think it will make us feel much better! I always carry my cell phone with me. I have a fear of falling down and being stranded!
-
What exactly is the 11 day detox diet? Sounds good to me
Check your public librairies, mine has it, I just have to go over and pick-it up. They even have the lose 8-lb in 1 day version! Not sure how I believe that and how good it is for your body, but still.. I'm desperate, 30 lbs to drop...
-
Hi ,just checking in as I haven't posted since the first page but have been keeping up daily. I had my appt. on Wed with the rad onc and will start on April 20th. She wanted to start this week but I had already planned a trip with some girl friends and she said we could wait until after. I am so glad as I am still recovering from my last chemo tx which really kicked my butt. I also had my first 3 week dose of herceptin on Monday which didn't help. So to all who have experienced meltdown post-chemo add my name to the list! I can cry at the drop of a hat. I am hoping that the next 2 weeks give me an opportunity to build up some strength so I won't be so tired.
Thanks for all the updates from those of you who have already started. It is so good to hear how you are all coping and to share our experiences. I get the best support and information off these boards and I can tell that this is a great group too.
To all of you who have already started Friday must be the best day of the week besides Sat. and Sunday. Have a great weekend

Susan - I have the same problem with my vision. I know it will get better. When I had my break from chemo to do surgery, my eyesight got better. Then when i went back to finish chemo, it got worse again. My onc says it is from the steroids. I really do look forward to that one getting better! I was almost in tears at a team lunch at a restaurant because I couldn't read the menu. on another note, my rad onc says what makes the difference between people that peel and ooze is how they took care of the skin when they were younger. If you damaged your skin when you were younger, you will probably have more side-effects, she says.
2 down, 26 to go! BTW, I was so not tired after my treatment today. I was even happy at how I felt like I had energy. Then, I sat down on the couch for a few minutes after lunch, and didn't wake up for a couple hours - go figure!

Fast Track Detox Diet (the book by Gittleman): http://www.amazon.com/Fast-Track-Detox-Diet-metabolism/dp/0767920465 (can get used online or at the public library like cebula mentions)
Here's my "Cliff Notes" verion. I promise never to make such a long post in the future.
The 11-day diet has three parts: 7-day "prequel" - 1-day fast - 3 day "sequel." The "prequel" and "sequel" parts of the diet are very similar, except she adds one daily serving of probiotics (yogurt or raw sauerkraut) and an added focus on the colon cleansing foods for the 3-day sequel; however, as far as I could tell, these were allowed in the prequel period too if you wanted them. She also makes supplement recommendations, but I'm not into that particularly.
Here's my notes (adapted from her book) on the foods that you need to eat (and avoid) on the first seven days of the diet (prequel) and on the 3 days after the one-day fast (sequel). You'll need her book for more details and the fasting day descriptions and directions.

Thanks for te sum-up on the detox diet. Not sure if I can eat like that for 11 days!! How much weight are we suppose to lose following this diet without cheating? I know I wouldn't be able to do this until rads are over though. Good luck everyone that decides to do this.
-
Just had my consult, will have mapping on Tuesday and start RADS after Passover, probably 4/20. Add me to the list!
-
I don't know if anyone mentioned this before, but I heard you are not supposed to gain or lose a significant amount of weight during rads because it will mess up with the mapping on your body, Anyone else hear that?
-
Susan13, My eyesight has also gotten worse from chemo! Now that I am on Tom's insurance, I am going to go get my eyes checked.
We went to the Poconos in PA for our honeymoon and had our own willa on top of a mountain complete with jacuzzi and fireplace. We took a bottle of champagne, and lots of candles. Very romantic.
It encourages me that rads seems to be going well for most of you. I do not start until 4/15, simulation on 4/14. I am trying not to think much about it until then.
I love being married! I have someone who loves and cares for me and will be with me through anything that happens.
Bette
-
Congrats bettelou, happy to hear you had a lovely honeymoon. Here's to a long and healthy life together! Juli, I had read on another thread not to lose weight during rads because you will lose the fat in your breast which can throw the "aim" off. But what if you don't have a breast? I have a t/e in place and if I lose weight, the t/e won't get smaller, so how does that work? I need to work on getting some of this chemo weight off and I don't want to wait another 5 1/2 weeks.
-
Congratulations bettelou on your marriage!
I didn't realize the recent changes in my vision could be related to chemo, will wait a bit longer before going in to get them checked again. Thanks for the information. Interesting point about not losing wt. while doing rads - - I'll ask my RadOnc that question on on Monday too.
-
It's just a little over 3 wks since my last chemo and my eyes are still messed up. I've always had to wear glasses for reading but not even those help much nowadays. I'm going to wait a little longer before I have my eyes checked to make sure all the drugs are out of system.
Wow, I didn't hear anything about not losing weight while doing rads. I can't really see myself losing more than a couple of pounds within the next 5 wks though!
I hope everyone is having a good weekend! Bette, congratulations again! I wish you many many years of happiness.
-
I'm probably strange, but I am 2 1/2 months out of chemo and still have problem with my eyes. It's not just the breast that they are worried about shrinking and moving, it's the other structures as well. You'd be surprised the little things that effect the mapping.
-
Hello everyone!! I finished my chemo (4 tx of TC) on 3/27. I go for mapping on 4/13 and start radiation on 4/20. I will get a total of 35 treatments. I'm looking forward to getting this part of the journey started and over with.
I just found this thread today so I haven't read all the posts yet. Is anyone starting Tamoxifen or Arimidex? If so did the doctors say to start during or after radiation? And if they suggested Arimidex did they say why?
Looking forward to getting acquainted with you ladies!
-
About the weight loss, they told me I would have to lose A LOT of weight, like 50 lbs for them them to have to redo the markers & all. In all reality, the likelyhood of me losing a great amount of weight during rads is very little, how much weight can one lose over 7 weeks. I know that through rads I still won't be eating great so I'm not real worried about it, though wouldn't mind losing 10 lbs over the next few weeks
Bette sounds like you had a lovely honeymoon, I'm happy you found a great guy willing to hold on to you through all this.
-
Bev56 - I will start Arimidex after rads because the chemo put me into menopause. Tamoxifen is usually given to pre-menopausal, but there are exceptions for both cases.
Caroline - Thanks, good to know it has to be a significant amount of weight loss/gain.
I stopped chemo end of January and am waiting for my eyes to return to their previous state. I don't want to pay a fortune for new glasses.
-
Yes, Juli... I have heard that from both of my onc and my rads physician...NO DIETING during rads because it will screw up the mapping...
-
Hello April group!
I started rads on April 2, will have #3 tomorrow. I had a left mastectomy in July, TC chemo ending Oct. 31. The strange thing was all docs told me I didn't need rads, until I researched the studies and they show I'd definitely get benefit. The radiology dept. agreed!
Had a great TC chemo group - we're still on - and look forward to being in this group, too. I'm getting 33 as well. Also on Arimidex for 3 months now.
Hi Bette - how's married life? - well, I know the answer!
((((Hugs))))
Gail
-
Married life is great! I do get a little lonely while he is working his 3-11 shift. But I knew ahead of time that nurses keep strange hours. We are trying to plan good times together in the mornings when he is home and rested.
I will be playing close attention to your experiences with rads, as I don't start until mid-April.
Have an appointment with medical oncologist tomorrow. She will not be happy that I have not started yet, but that is how things worked out with so many surgical complications since January.
Tom will not be home for six more hours. The evenings go so slowly without him.

I started treatment last week, and except for feeling tired and emotional it was fine. I was told to try to keep my weight constant as well. My rad onc had me start using something on my skin before treatment began, which I was already doing. I get itchy this time of year, and had been using calendula oil on my incisions and itchy places anyway. My tummy didn't itch like last year until I stopped putting it on, and then it itched like crazy, so it works for me.
The oncology dept recommends Aquaphor, but I looked it up and it's mostly petroleum jelly with some alcohol and other stuff in it. I'm not using that! They also like aloe vera, but it is drying. So I asked if I could use my calendula (in some olive oil), and the rad onc agreed. Is anyone else feeling short of breath? I think someone else said they were and, like me, were told the rads doesn't cause that. Hmmm
Thanks for sharing, ladies, and I'm glad being married agrees with our newlywed!
-
terrilee - I'fve been short of breath, too, and rad onc said it was too early to be from damage to the lungs. I don't know what else would cause it because that's been the only change to my breathing recently.
-
Hello all - I'm from the December chemo group. Just wanted to check up on Elaine since I heard she is posting here now..... Elaine, I too started rads (dose dense) quickly after chemo. Though I may have been a bit more fatigued, and experienced a bit more body swelling - it went well.
My rad onc said no cream prevents damage. Use whatever is the most soothing; so I used nothing at all. Significant weight changes change the mapping for radiating your body; but I got weighed weekly and Xrayed frequently to ensure the CT scan map matched the area that was being irradiated. If you get a chance ask to see the map and then see how closely they are matching it while zapping you.
Now that I am 3 weeks post rads, my energy level and strength are back up. Haven't started running, but am getting back into aerobic walking. I hadn't heard about the 30 lbs!!!!!!! I've gained about 10 pounds since diagnosis...... I needed to lose 15 then!
My onc let me recover from rads (three weeks) before she started me on Femara - definitely needed the break! I'm day 4 of Femara and praying for minimal SEs. Part of the reason I am keen on losing weight is because of the joint pain many have with this - I'm hoping fit and trim will keep the pain down.

Hi everyone. I've been trying to stay as busy as possible today at work since lately my mind has been drifting quite a bit. It's so hard to stay focused on work stuff when I have so many other things on my mind! Well, it's Monday and back to rads! It's week 2 for some of us. I hope it continues to go smoothly and I wish the best for everyone starting or getting them simulations/tats done this week.
Well, I don't think there's any danger of me losing too much week during the next 5 weeks. I had a small lunch but just topped it off with a big cookie and a coke. I'll just tell people "it's doctor's orders!".
Mary - Hi there! Thank you for the valuable information!
Bette - My BF works long hours too. I'm home by myself a lot too but have come to get used to it (for the most part!). Finding time for each other is definitely the most important thing you can do!
-
Looks like I'm being bumped to a May Radiation Start, with simulation on 5/6/09.
I wish everyone here the best of luck with your treatments. oxo
