APRIL Rads Anyone?

Hi Jules -
I know what you mean - that it seems so "real" now. I'm a little tired too - but probably from the anxiety of anticipation and you are right - no big deal - I had a "meltdown" over the weekend about the reality of all of this finally starting . . . . before was just waiting . . . this is my first "treatment" for BC - didn't need chemo because of low Oncotype score - so hurry up and wait and here I am . . .
-
Britt-
But I have to say I'm glad to have the plan in place and getting the treatment started. All the waiting and decision making was driving me crazy!
-
I feel the same way! After all the waiting, finally, the plan is in place and the schedule is in order! I think we are both feeling a bit tired because of the relief that we feel! And my place is great - they answered every question, however stupid, that I had - like about bodywashes and self-tanners (white legs in FL in the summer - NOT!) and really went out of their way to focus on what was necessary for the "affected area" and what was not.
-
Hi, me too! Had my first tx today. The treatments are no big deal - anything without pain, even a little pain, is doable in my book. I also am glad to get started with something after all the waiting. At least we can now see the end of the tunnel. Britt, like you I also did not need chemo because of low oncotype but I was dx a month before you so I'm really glad to be on the mend.
I asked last week and again today about moisturing my skin and was told to use absolutely nothing on the breast or under the arm. If (and I'm thinking 'when') there comes a need, like my skin starts to dry, burn or whatever, they will give me something to use. Deodorant they tell me is an absolute no-no, period. For bathing they recommend Dove, but I didn't think to ask if the bodywash was okay. Since Dove bodywash is all I use anyway it didn't occur to me to ask about bar soap. Thank God I've never had underarm hair since they say no shaving. I sweat very little anyway. I'm certain my coworkers will appreciate that.
I've been tired the last week or so and I'm thinking it may be the Armimdex that I started 3-1/2 weeks ago? Or, it could just be in my mind - who knows.

Hello Beauties!!
I had my 6th rad tx this morning...skin's a little pinker than it was on Friday, but I'll be using the RadiaGel that's been prescribed, as well as Aquaphor if I get itchy. I also have an exam on Mondays to guage how things are turning out, and I was shocked (not really
) to see that my weight had gone up another two pounds. My rads doc stated that the majority of women who are treated for breast cancer will gain an average of 30 pounds after they finish chemo. When I asked why, she said that it's because the hormone supply has been shut off.
Needless to say, I was not a happy girl.
For those who haven't started yet, don't worry...the machine does the exact same thing it did when you got your simulation done! Piece of cake!

Carol-(yeah on a clean scan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)I had an anxiety meltdown when I went for my sim too. For me it was the fact that I was moving on, no more of that nasty chemo. But in a weird way, it scared me that I wouldn't be getting chemo anymore. Now I had to put my trust in new people and these big machines. While laying on the table I thought I would pass out. More changes, was I ready to move on? We all have been thru alot, and many of us still have a way to go. I have a t/e, anyone else? So down the line, it will get replaced which means more surgery. I have read that t/e and radiation are not such a happy couple. So I will eventually worry about that. I guess it will always be something. I don't have to worry about being bald forever though because I too see tiny hair stubbles with my magnifying mirror. Hooray!!!!!!!!!!
-
Robin are you kidding me? 30 pounds? I don't know how much more my rear can stretch lol!! I am in trouble!
-
I'm serious. That little bit of information came from BOTH my oncologist AND my rads doc.
NOT happy.

30 POUNDS... GOOD GRIEF! WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED TO CONTEND TO??
I had my simulation yesterday. Quite uncomfortable laying on that hard table for an hour. So for some reason I thought I would tell them when I wanted to start and what time I wanted my treatments to be... NOT! Oh well.... they only had one time slot open in the mornings, which is the best time of the day for me to do my treatments considering I am working and have to pick up my daughter from daycare a few days after work. So I won't be getting into work until 11:30 every morning during the 5 weeks. I'm actually thinking that might be better for me anyway considering how tired I have been from chemo.
kjbell- I have t/e's also, and worried about how it will react to the rads, let's just keep our fingers crossed!

Hi gals. I had my first TX yesterday too. I had the simulation first. More markings all over my boob and I got my last tattoo. Then I moved to another room and the tech took a couple of xrays and then zapped me. I have to say that it felt really weird laying there exposed and having them mark me up - at least it was blue ink. I got most of it off in the shower.
So my instructions are as follows - I can shower daily. No nude sunbathing (as if!). Use only aloe vera gel 2x daily. No other creams or lotions. After I was finished I felt so tired. I know it couldn't be from the rads but I think it was probably from plain stress exhaustion. So I went home and layed on the couch and fell asleep. It felt good napping. It's strange to think I have to go back again today and everyday for the next 6 1/2 weeks. I looked at my poor lil boob this morning and I swear it's already looking more puckered than before. I'm sad... But I'm alive so I have to drag myself out of this pit of dispair and enjoy life. Ok time for me to do a little *cheer* here at my desk.
Carol - I'm so happy your PET came back clean. Hallelujah! I pray for the same good results for all of us!
Have a great day ladies!
Much love, Elaine

Robin, 30 pds???? I don't think so! I've been procrastinating getting back to gym but I think this little post is all the motivation I need! Cancer has taken 6 mths of my life. I refuse to live the next 6 on a diet!! LOL Thanks for the info
-
Susan-I too thought I might get a choice of times. They only had 8:45 open, which I guess is good because I can now get more accomplished in the morning.
Elaine-I know what you mean about being tired already. I have been exhausted since yesterday. Maybe it is the stress of going thru the door that has big red letters screaming "Danger, high radiation area!"
Today they put a wire on me to check the dose I am getting. Don't they know????
Have a nice day.

I had rad #6 yesterday. Every Monday I get an xray and see the radiologist afterwards, I had nothing to report...no problems so far. I put on Emu oil 3x a day.
Good Luck to all of you just starting this week.
-
Hi, I've been scheduled for my radiation oncology "consult" next Monday the 6th. Guess I'll find out the schedule at that time.
Regarding that damn chemo wt. gain. I was all swollen up last week in my hands and feet and legs (and up about 15 lbs up after six months of chemotherapy, but I mostly blame the dexamethasone). I started the "Fast Track Detox Diet" on Thursday (it can be googled) and it really helped. Fell off the diet wagon a bit today, not too bad, so will restart it tomorrow.
-
Hi gals. I had rad #2 yesterday. I was so tired afterwards! I could barely keep my eyes open on the drive home. I had fully planned to stop at 'Curves' and workout afterwards but all I wanted to do was go home. I ended up taking another 30 minute nap. I know that fatique is supposed to set in around the 3rd or 4th week but I didn't realize I would be getting tired so quickly.
I hope everyone else is doing ok! I'm interested to know if anyone else is feeling tired like I am.
-
Elaine,
When was your last chemo? Could it be that you just have not had a break in between to rest up even a little bit??

Susan, funny you should ask that. I was just emailing with a friend who has gone through this and she asked me the same thing. She said it might be a "chemo-hangover". She's probably right - my last chemo was March 12th. The rad tech did say that I might not feel totally like myself until rads are done because I didn't have much of a break after chemo. Well, I will 'buck it up' I guess!
-
Oh wow.... I'm surprised your onc. would have you start rads so quickly. Mind wanted me to have at least a 4 week break before I started. So of course you are still tired from chemo , you poor thing! Are you working during rads?
-
Yes I'm still working. I worked through chemo too. I'm telling ya, I don't like to complain too much but I'm really starting to feel beat down. I'm a faithful person so I guess I better get to praying. I did happen to run into my oncologist yesterday and he asked how I was doing. He reminded me again that rads would be easier than the chemo. I told him I'm gonna hold him to that!
-
It's alot to deal with! I started having hot flashes and yesterday I was SUPER cranky and moody.... my poor husband and daughter. Every week my onc. asks me "how are your spirits?"... I think next week I'll have to change my answer, cause I have been doing good until lately.
-
Lainey--
I had the exact same reaction yesterday (my treatment #2) I seriously thought I was going to have to pull my car over in the afternoon because I could barely keep my eyes open! I came home and slept from 6:30-8:30pm and again from 10:00pm until 7:00am. Surely this can't be the radiation. And it can't be chemo hangover, as I didn't have chemo. I'm hoping that yesterday was just a fluke 'cause I can't function like that for 6 weeks!!
Jules
-
Jules, wow I'm glad I'm not the only one. I never take naps after work but all I could think about was laying down on the bed and closing my eyes! I can't imagine that the rads are doing this to us. Let me know how you feel after today.
Susan, I am having night sweats too. Ugh..... chemopause is getting the best of me. I've been ultra moody and cranky as @#$%. Did your doctor suggest anything that you could take for the hot flashes?
-
Hi all
I met with my rad onc this past Monday, had the CT scan done and tattoos. Not happy about those, they're bigger than I was expecting
I start rads on 04/13 to finish last week of May. I'll get up to date with the post when I have a chance, but I wanted to stop in and say hi
-
ARe these permanent tattoos that we have to get??
-
I met with the rad onc today. Had CT scan and got tattooed. Will do stimulation on the 9th and then start on 13th. So it will be almost a month since I finished chemo.

I had my last chemo March 18th. I had my CT and markers (no tattoos) Tuesday. Tomorrow, I do simulation and get my first zapping.
You don't HAVE to get tattoos. But you do have to ask NOT to be tattoo'd. If you don't want to be tattoo'd (I didn't), they just write on you with permanent marker, and then cover those spots with tegaderm. Seems like a much more reasonable option, but it is maintenance for them, and if I should pull off the tegaderm and wash off the permanent marker, then they would have to do the setup again, but I'm really not planning on doing that.
Just know you have options, but you have to ask, and be determined. The rad onc did try to talk me into getting the tattoos, but I knew I didn't want to get them. She asked me if it was the pain, etc, that I was worried about. I told her it wasn't the pain, it was just me, and I just don't want them. Hard to argue against that one. She told me to think about it. When I went yesterday for the CT and to be marked, the consent form was marked that I permitted them to do tattoos. I told the tech absolutely not and "unmarked" that from the consent form. The tech was fine with it, and showed me the tegaderm dots (very small) that they would leave on to protect the permanent marker marks. If you have an allergy to tegaderm, I'm not sure what the option would be, but allergies were not an issue for me.

Hello. I finished 6 months of chemo on 2/9, had a bilat. mastectomy on 3/11 (no construction yet), and just had my radiation mapping session last week. I will start rads in about 2 weeks. I am so happy to be in the last phase of my treatment....Radiation will be to both left and right chest walls, entire sternum, and left clavicle area...I am so happy to have the support of you all!! This should be a walk in the park, right??
-
HI, had tx #3 this morning. I'm also feeling tired. About 7:30pm I'm scouting out for the bed and by 9-9:30 I'm down for the night. I've been blaming it on the Arimidex because I also thought fatigue wouldn't set in until week 3-4. If it is the AI and the rad fatigue is still to come then I probably will fall asleep at work!
My tattoos are so small I can barely see them. But then I have many moles on my back and chest so they are just blending in (altho the moles are brown and tattos are black). They also are in spots that will be covered by anything I wear, even spaghetti straps (not that I wear them anymore!)
-
Hi Ladies-
Is there room for one more in this group? I got my CT scan and tatoos today, along with that comfortable pillow and will start my rads on Mon. the 6th. (30 tx) Had lump and axillary dissec-- I was fortunate to be able to skip chemo due to good grades on the oncotype test. But had my first major meltdown on the hour ride home. I guess its finally starting to sink in, had been in a kind of peaceful fog thus far.
So I am very happy to have found this wonderful site and to be with all of you on this adventure- and look forward to the support. I'm amazed at the number of strong women out there.
