Chris Matthews just had Rep Deborah Wasserman (FL) on Hardball tonight. She is a mom of two young kids who found her cancerous lump, and was set for lumpectomy and radiation, then underwent BRCA gene testing due to her Jewish heritage and discovered she was a carrier, and instead underwent bilateral mastectomy and ovary removal.

She is introducing a Young Women With Breast Cancer Act (defined as < 40) to increase the public education of breast cancer prevalence, ethnicity and genes (she mentioned to Mr. Matthews that in the Jewish population the incidence of carrying a BRCA gene is 1:40) etc...

It's wonderful that women and men area publicly speaking up (Mr. Matthews mentioned recent NYT article on prostate cancer) of their personal struggles with cancer. Especially in Congress.

Otoh, we still need a cure. Money is tight so paradigm or model shifts may be necessary in cancer research. Let's hope some of the best and brightest remain in medicine and shine their light on young researchers/clinicians too.

We could really use a Congressperson to introduce a specific Stage IV Breast Cancer Research Act too, imho.

Best to you all,

Tender

    Hi Tender,

       Good to see you.

I watched the Chris Matthews segment with Congresswoman Wasserman twice last night.  What a great piece of legislation she is putting forward for all the young woman out there. I haven't read the legislation yet, but sincerely hope it passes.

I loved Wasserman before I knew she had battled b/c and found her to be strong, sensible and well-informed.  Amazing she underwent 7 surgeries last year and continued campaigning, working and caring for her three children.

Hopefully, Wasserman might be able to work towards finding someone to introduce legislation for Stage IV as well.

    Best to you too,

    Bren
