Contact Prosthesis

Options

I want to get another prosthesis and have looked at the new Amoena Contact.  Has anyone had experience with this one, or is there another contact prosthesis you might recommend?

Many thanks,

Linda

I have the Amoena Tresia 653.  I don't know if this is the new one since I have had mine for about a  year or more.  But...I LOVE the 653!!  My fitter recommended it and I am glad she did!

I used to be able to wear the contact forms and loved it.  Then, they started not holding on as well, and I develped a sensitivity to the adhesive.  I loved being able to wear it with a regular bra as I had never found a mast bra that fit right.  I finally found a few mast bras cut for a petite figure and save the contact form for special occasions when I need a strapless or halter bra.

which mast bras did you find work well for petite figure? I have same problem .... have trouble with silicone against skin in regular bras but many mast bras don't fit my remaining breast well - A cup and now with menopause even the "A" is dropping ;-)

I am also petite and like the Anita bras but some people like the ABC t-shirt bras in the petite sizes.

How does it feel when the contact prosthesis is removed ? I tried one for a few minutes and it really HURT when I pulled it away from my skin. I'm hoping there might be one which does not pull at the skin when it's removed.I can't imagine having to go through that painful sensation every time I take it off.....

thanks for info, caaclark. my in-network provider says my insurance won't pay for anita due to expense and she doesn't have abc though says she might get them someday - I might try online - I have spent a lot of money over the years trying different bras and forms and have limited income ....

sam52 - I experienced the same thing when tryng them on/removing them and have avoided buying a contact form for that reason.

I tried one and liked the way it hugged my chest, but when I removed it, my chest was wet from the perspiration that it trapped.  I was afraid that over time it might cause a rash.

    lilums,

I wear the ABC t-shirt bra as well as the Trulife cami bra.  I love the cami bra because it allows me to wear button down shirts again.  I am really concave on my mast side almost all the way up to my colarbone, and button down shirts emphasize the unevenness.  With the cami bra, the lace sort of pulls away from my chest, somewhat hiding the hollow.  The cami bra runs small.  I usually wear a 34 A, but in that bra I need a 36.  I haven't tried any other of the Trulife bras, but they might fit you and be covered by your insurance.  Good luck.

I have a bi-lateral and have the trulife Harmony Silk Connect.  I really like it alot, and it comes off easily without any trouble.  It has a shallow.average fit, and runs small (compared to Amoena).  After many years of just having a single mastectomy, I am enjoying the contact forms with regular bras.  I've had mine for 2 months, and I just have to wash it with soap everynight and air dry.

I am new to the board.  I had a mastectomy in 2006 without reconstruction.  I just got my first prothesis.  (long story)  I have a question.  I have looked several places and cannot find a source that explains how to care for the prosthesis.  I have the amoena with a thin film of covering over it.  When I got my prosthesis from the American Cancer Society no one told me the proper care and I slept on it.  It fell apart!  I was devastated.  I have a new one and am afraid to use it!  It seems so fragile.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.Smile

I'm also new to this forum and my question is this: is it necessary to wear a bra with the Amoena Contacts or any other contact prosthesis?  I have never found a bra that fits well.  They all ride up.  If I tighten the straps, the bra rides up further; if I loosen the straps, they're down off my shoulders.  My hope was to wear the contact prostheses (bilateral) and skip the bra altogether.  Is this an option?  Do the contacts at least stop the ' bra ride-up"?

I've read that if you perspire, the contact forms tend to fall off. I think they are just meant to be worn infrequently and just to have the feel of "normal breasts", not necessarily to be worn without a bra. Try  a tighter band size and a heavier form to keep the bra down. When I was wearing a foam prosthesis, my bra would always ride up. Then I switched to silicone prosthesis and a tighter band, haven't had that problem since.

Thanks for the reply. I also have lymphedema and tighter isn't necessarily a good option for me.  Guess I'll have to look at alternatives.

     Thanks again.

The contact forms are definitely meant to be worn with bras. Amoena unfortunately discontinued a contact form that could be worn with "skin supports" and no bra was necessary. Still You makes a nice pocketed camisole (called a tank top on their website), which can be worn with their non-silicone forms, Illusions. I wear the camisole with the Amoena latex foam leisure forms #126. It's great for exercise and doesn't move around. You can check out these and other options at my non-profit website, BreastFree.org. Look particularly at the "Breast Forms" section and the "Bras and Camisoles" section for products that many women have recommended.

Also, have you found a good fitter? A good fitter can really help you figure out what forms and bras can work for you. Your bra shouldn't be riding up. I'm flat as a pancake but that's not a problem for me, even though I worried it would be.

    Barbara-

Thanks so much for the info.  I already have light-weight Amoenas and just ordered the Still You tank top.  It seems a bit pricey for a tank top but certainly looks like a great alternative.  When it arrives I'll let you know how it works for me.  Thanks again.  :-)

One tip about the Still You Tank Tops (yes, they are pricey, but mine have held up very well): I wash them in the machine, but always air dry them. Once I forgot and stuck one in the drier and it doesn't look quite as good now.

    Hope you like yours!

Will let you know; should arrive any day.  Thanks for the tip - no drier.  :-)

It came yesterday and I put it on immediately.  I love it.  Had my exercise class this morning and it didn't move at all.  My bras would constantly creep up, then the straps would fall, especially with stretching or exercises on the mat where I'm on my hands and knees.  And actually, I turn it up a bit so it isn't so long in the trunk.  Today I'm ordering more.

So tell me Barbara, is there a secret to getting in and out of it easily since it's a spandex style material?  I had a lymphedema therapy appt. yesterday afternoon and when I was getting dressed, it was awkward getting the tank top back on and when I did, I found one prosthesis had fallen out on the table.  LOL  :-)  There isn't any closure on the pocket as with most bras.

Dear Linda,  I had an Amoena Contact, but returned it after 2 days.  The first day when trying to position it, it hurt like crazy, when pulling it off.  The second day it wouldn't stay on, lol.  The sales person who sold it to me, guaranteed that I could wear it in a marathon & it would stay stuck.  The instructions with the form says your skin has to be dry & free of talcs & moisturizers.  Mine was.  It was also guaranteed only for I think 6 months.  Hope this helps.

    Dedo,

I'm so happy you like the Camisole and that, like me, you found that the breast forms don't move around when you're wearing it. I tend to step into my camisole and pull it up--I virtually never lift it over my head. I haven't had a problem doing it that way; the breast forms stay put, though I sometimes need to adjust them a bit once I've got the cami on.

Good idea, Barbara, and it keeps the fabric all going the right way.  You can see, I need all the help I can get! They had to wonder at the therapist's office what I was doing in there when I was getting dressed and why I was laughing.  And when I came out my hair looked like I'd been sleeping for a week.  It still cracks me up.   :-)

Thanks Angel.  I hadn't ordered it yet, and now I'm not sure I will!  Ouch!

I do have an Amoena camisole (alternates as a tank top for swimming) but I don't fancy wearing it in the summer months, and it does move around -- am constantly having to adjust myself!

Does anyone find their chest itchy as the day wears on?  It drives me a bit crazy, starting in the early eveningFrown.

    Hi, Linda.

I use store-brand 1% hydrocortisone cream, and it takes care of most of my itching.  I didn't expect it to work, but it has.  I rarely need it any longer.  I'm 3 years out from diagnosis and bilat.

I'm bilateral and have the Amoena Contact Lite forms.  I've also had the problem of bras riding up, so thought this form would work great.  Unfortunately, I was left with a lot of excess tissue and because of this, the forms are very uncomfortable.  And yes, they do hurt when coming off, maybe even more than what would be considered normal because of the excess tissue.  So, I just wear them in a pocketed bra with the backing on to cover the sticky part.

But I do have another question about contact forms if you wouldn't mind me asking here.  They say the stickiness of contact forms eventually wears off and I'm wondering if there's some way to get rid of the stickiness now so that I would not have to use the backing and still use the form in a pocket or even next to skin.  Would powder get rid of the stickiness?

IMHO, I would like to have a foam contact form.  It would be very light, so wouldn't take much to keep it attached and would work with a very simple bra or cami instead of a heavier duty bra.  I do have a Still You cami, but the weight of the silicone form seems too much for this.

    Hi Linda-

Re: itchy chest. My itching is mainly controlled during the day and evening, as long as I'm dressed and have something (bra, cami) against my chest.  When I get ready for bed and have only a loose fitting pj top on, it starts with a passion.  I believe it's nerve damage from the surgery and it occurs all across the front of my chest and some across my back.  It's like having tons of mosquito bites and it began after healing from the surgery and is a nightly thing.

    Barbara & Sher-

Barbara- You're right.  It's very easy to step into the cami, and I've found I prefer not to roll it up most of the time.

Sher- You my also be right re: the weight of the silicone forms.  I have heavier and lighter and am experimenting.  The lighter forms seem to get compressed more with the cami material and the heavier ones require strap adjustment to keep them from sagging (which is probably what my own would be doing if I still had them)  :-)

In any event, I love the camis and they are much more comfortable for me than the various bras I've worn, whether professionally fitted or not.

Well, I did finally order the Amoena Contact and I really like it.  Doesn't hurt when taking it off and I was able to buy a very comfy Bali bra to wear with it.  I don't exercise with it thoughWink

One thing  -- it does feel hotter but fortunately our summer has been a bit on the cool (and wet!) side.  They say there's another El Nino happening in the Pacific, so I guess  we can blame our weather on that.

    Cheers, everyone!

    Linda
