Wow there are so many of you ladies going today for #1 or #2 I'm going to spend the day sending really good karma thru the airwaves. Lots of good thoughts for all.
-
Hi Everyone - here is a shout out for several more gals taking on Tx #2 today. Good luck ladies!
JenniferK, Laurie41 and MMdj43 - you gals will rock!
Kim40 and MaryHH - has anyone heard these gals? They have been very quiet lately.
Our thoughts/good vibes and ju-ju are with you all!
-
Reeney77 - Any news on your liver enzymes issue (?) and new chemo start date yet? I have never heard of this (but that doesn't mean anything).
-
Hello All!!!!
Will be heading for second Tx on April 3rd, did my lab work today and will meet with my onc on next Tuesday. Had my first visit with the lymphedema specialist and "YUP" I'll be getting PT and a lovely chestnut colored sleeve and gauntlet. My husband chose chestnut because he figured it would go with anything I wore and would be less noticable.
I attended my look good, feel better session and it was quite fun ... although the young lady in charge of the class didn't realize you are supposed to wipe of the cleanser BEFORE you begin putting on make-up
. The make-up I received was wonderful, although I don't normally wear a lot of make-up ... just eye liner, mascara and lipstick. I never knew there were TWELVE steps to putting on make-up!!! Who on earth has that much time to get ready to for anything and still be on time????
-
I have been trying to read all the intervening comments and have scared myself a bit. I start chemo on Thursday and I really think I may have underestimated the ravages I am about to suffer. I have this plan in my head that I will be able to work full time except on the days I get chemo, but am now beginning to think that may be unrealistic. I also have an hour long commute to and from work and am worried that my driving ability may be affected.
How is everyone else handling work/chores/family needs during this difficult time?
Linda
-
Luv2sing - the 12 steps made me laugh too! The gal who lead the class must have been 22 years old and was challenging everyone to remember all 12 steps. I felt like I was in the first grade. Can't I just skip to step 10 and 12?
-
HazyDC - are you getting Tx #2 as well??
KellerKA - you weren't kidding. Today is a popular day!
Rusty and Nicole0714 - you've been quiet. How are you feeling?
theredheadamy and SimoneJ - ditto? Hows it going since your treatment?
5timewinner (Nadine) - good to hear from you! Yes, iching was the first indicator for me that the hair was going. Love it while it is still hanging on (dont pull it out) OR get a fun-totally-new-to-you-haircut. Its a great time to experiment.
-
Hi Linda - what's your treatment? Most onco will load you up with steroids so the first couple of days after you might feel great or have a lot of crazy energy. There are lots of gals who are working full time through their treatment, and I am sure they will chime in with how they are managing their schedules.
re: first treatment for me was a really long appointment. Almost 5 hours. I didn't drive myself home, but I probably could have if needed (at the time with all the steroids, the biggest effect on me was the benadryl). My chemo nurse said I should be fine for driving if that is what I want to do. On the subsequent days...I think it just depends on how you feel overall.
-
5timewinner-
I see where ginagina advised you not to pull out the hair tufts, but it's morbidly fascinating when it starts to happen. I can't explain it - I was compelled to pull it and "amaze" (disgust) my friends...until big bald patches appeared. Oh - this is for real - my HAIR is coming out. I have a few hairs left, and it's so silly the way I baby them. I still use shampoo and conditioner, and every morning in the shower, I use that time to give my head love and to imagine my hair re-growing. Quickly.
Linda
I know lots of us are working during treatment (I'm on Cytoxan/Abraxane every 3 weeks). I am lucky to have a job where I can work at home on the couch, so I usually do that...chemo day is Friday, Saturday and Sunday are lie-around-watch-movies, and work at home for the following few days. I think I COULD push it and come in if I had to, but it's nice to conserve my energy for important things - like napping. Another plus - at home, I can wear a buff or go bald instead of putting my head in this itchy vise also known as a wig...Plus you never know when that laxative is gonna kick in... how did I get here? 42 years old and the highlight of the week is when the Senekot takes effect.
-
Hi to all of you. I have read all of the posts but I cannot reply. I have been fighting queeziness. Last night was a bad one. Compazine didnt do its job. Just got back from Onc. Blood count was 600. I told him all of my symptoms constipation, fatigue (which is normal) and depression. and heartburn. He gave me Lexapro and Nexum. He said It was very soon to see these Side effects so soon. Usuallly after 2 or 3 cycles. Its been one week today since my first AC. He said if it contuniues he will be forced to lower my dose or make it every 3 weeks. instead of 2(which he does not want to do) From now on I get chemo on every other Tue, Wed Nuelsta shot, then I got back on Thurs dor IV antinausea and IV fluids. He said that will get me through the weekend Oh joy 3 days of the chemo lab.
-
Doctor now might want to do a liver biopsy but i'm gonna try to avoid that at all costs. no more biopsies for me hopefully. i already had my PET scan and abdominal ultrasound so i know there is nothing major going on. Just wish the levels would normalize already. Pray for me that yesterday's blood work shows improvement.
Does this mean i'll have to join the April Chemo board? is there one set up yet?
-
Linda,
I second chick and gina - working is doable, but you'll have to see how your body reacts. I get tx on Fridays, and am back to work on Tuesday. I don't feel great on that day, but good enough to drive/work, etc. You can drive yourself to tx as long as you aren't given Benadryl in your IV, it can make you a little loopy. Which chemo cocktail are you being served?
I know Mom_of_boys goes back to work the day after her treatment (wonder woman!!) and I think she has been ok. For some people, the worst days are after day 4, for others, the worst is right after treatment. Try not to stress yourself out too much and you'll be surprised that the anticipation was actually worse that the infusion. Take all your nausea meds, you'll be fine!
-
Reeny-
Didn't see your post til after I posted... thoughts and prayers are with you for your levels!!
You are welcome to stay here if you want, no need to move to another board! Many of us here will be going through treatment for quite awhile, so feel free to stick around!
-
WOW..love those pics and the courageous family members.. that is true love and devotion!!!
Have been assigned my chemo protocol for April 8th.. it is not a suprise as it is taxotere and cytoxan as it is every three weeks and for 9 weeks. 4 treatments total.
All was explained to me and have already placed a RX order to get all that i need for the pre chemo day and after etc. Neulasta shot will also be ordered.
Well, the waiting is somewhat over, now it is real. Surgery i thought was incredible to get thru and did that,,.and have to beleive i can do this to. Need some colorful scarves as i have also some wigs but not something i may wear all the time. Cannot beleive this is all goin to be but i have all that i need to do this and with courage.Like all of you!!!!!!!!!
Hugs to ALL,
Donna

Just returned from my second chemo cocktail of AC. The first go around left me throwing up the day of chemo and then had me laid low with nausea and vomiting on the week-end. My Onc has tweaked my meds. She is having me use a patch for 5 days, Sancuso. Anyone else tried this? I will take Emend for an additional two days and phenegran on a sceduled basis. I also have Ativan for sleep. At the end of today's chemo I got 1 mg of Ativan. I am home and so far I feel much, much, better than that last infusion day. I will go in tomorrow for my Neulasta shot, which will hopefully keep my neutrophil count from dropping to zero. I spent 5 days in the hospital with a fever and was placed on IV antibiotics. My Onc was not happy that I had not called her about the nausea and vomiting, I thought it was a given. So all you other cocktail ladies make sure you call the Onc or nurse if you are feeling yucky. There seems to be an arsenal of drugs available to make us feel better. I will be back at work tomorrow morning. Hope all you cocktail recipients are doing well. I enjoy reading all the tips and pointers for making it thru chemo. Take care and I wish all of you the very best.............

vangoghpro - I started tx last Monday and the anticipation was MUCH worse than the actual treatment. I'm in two studies so I was there a lot longer than most but but actual tx started at 11:30 and I was done by about 3:30. I took the massive amounts of steroids the night before and the day of treatment and had so much energy Sunday night I went on a massive cleaning binge. My husband came to the hospital about 2:00 and hung out with me. I could have driven myself home even with the Benedryl but was kinda glad he was there. I was fine Monday night only thing was a funny taste in my mouth which just went away yesterday. All I wanted was something salty and/or something sweet - Sun Chips and peanut butter ice cream got me through. I went to work the next day with no problem - had my Neulasta shot Tuesday and worked Wednesday. I started getting a little achy Wednesday night - I felt every old bone injury. I took Thursday off work because I have a lot of time accrued and figured why push it. I was definitely feeling the se from the shot but Tylenol and Claritin helped. I took an Oxycodene Wednesday night mostly to sleep. I have my second tx this Monday and hope it's as uneventful. I know this is a scary time but the women on here are wonderful and will get you through all of it. This isn't the most pleasant thing you will do in your life but it is doable. I'm scheduled for 8 dd treatments and was really happy to cross that first one off my list - only 7 more to go.
Hang in there and remember we are all here for you.
Hugs,
Michele

Ladies I am home from round #1. Everything went as good as I could have hoped. No reaction to the taxol or herceptin. The only SE so far is headaches from the steroids. I knew I would probably have those since I have had them with prednisone before. When I stop taking the steroids they will disapear and right now tylenol or vicodin takes care of them. I was there from 8:15 to 4:00 because they give it as slow as possible and they give 3 other things first, Zofran, Tagamet and benedryl. Came home with scripts for 2 other nausea meds. Zofran being one and the other is taken 3 times a day for next 3 days. Zofran only as needed.
I work 20 or so hours a week and they are letting me be flexible. My husband is retired for the Illinois Dept of Natural resources and bakes as a hobby, so he is around to help with cleaning and meals. He is wondeful. Just doesn't talk about my diagnosis much.
Marshall 2000 I live just outside Champaign- Urbana the home of the University of Illinois.
-
Michele54 yeah for you Thats great you have had no problems. I hope it continues as well
Nana I am happy the first is over.
-
Had tx2 today. I must say I have a killer headache! I've taken everything I am supposed to take and it still won't go away. I am trying to relax but it is hard with such a pain in the head. The nausea is starting as well. I am hoping to get some rest tonight and feel better tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed for me. Oh yeah, the wait is over and the hair is coming out. I am going to let my hubby shave my head in a few days at the most. The kids are excited to see mom with a mohawk. Pics will be forthcoming when it is done so stay tuned...
Back to resting now. I will follow the posts as best I can. Hope everyone else is doing well.
Hugs to all.

I got on line to the company that Luv2sing said gave out a free wrap to cancer patients ,( March 23 post on page 11) and it had an a toll free # you could call after you looked at them and picked which one you wanted. 888-884-3653. I ordered the hip Geo Chocolate. They said it would ship in about 2 days. They wanted to know where I got their name and I told them from a friend on a cancer web sight. They were delighted. I am sure we will get a catalog of their products. But if I like the first I might by another . Annette
-
Back from tx#2 and have now been told that I'm HER2+ so I'll be doing Herceptin (sp?) every three weeks for a year on top of everything else. I'm hoping the Cancer Society (or someone) can provide babysitting services as well as a ride. It's one thing to ask relative to help out for 6 treatments, but I can't expect them to do it for a whole year ... plus I've got radiation after my July surgery which of course is every day. It's tough with one car and no sitter :-(
-
van gogh pro - I am TCx4 - had the first on 3/11. I take Wed, Thurs, Fri off work (I have a lot of sick days accumulated that I can use). Then back to work Monday. This was great. SE's were dry mouth, sleeplessness, by the time Monday came I had gotten a good night's sleep on Sunday when the steroids wore off with a little help from Simply Sleep by Tylenol. This is my
13th day and I was more tired at work today, but had lot's of weird dreams last night and woke up several times to pee. (due to dryness, I drink a lot of water now and usually get up 2 - 3 times to go).
Treat yourself as well as you can and it should be doable.
-
-
I am starting chemo on March 30th. Has anyone else done ac x 4.
Thanks -
To all the ladies that had Tx #2 today, hope you did well during it, and know that you made it through another one. For those scheduled tomorrow, I wish all you girls well; you will get through it. And when in doubt, ask for Xanax or Ativan to help ease the anxiety if you do feel it would help.
I had Tx #2 today as well. For the most part it went well except that my veins were not cooperating so much this morning (it took 3 pricks in my veins before it gave in......stubborn bitches). Then I had a mild reaction with the Taxotere; suddenly my face felt very hot. Not sure if it was the start of a full-blown reaction but the nurse stopped it. Then they loaded me with more Benadyl, saline, and then slowly introduced the Taxotere. Once I felt okay with it, they resumed the normal dosage at full speed. Btw, have any of you ever gotten Benadryl in your IV? Holy shyte did that burn! I said to the nurse, "WTF"? She apologized and promised that it would subside in a minute or two, which it did. But holy crap I was ready to dunk my arm in an ice bucket. But after all that, I was still feeling loopy, sent my husband out to run errands and I slept through most of it. It's very doable!
kellerka - I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. It sucks that now we have to suddenly be so cautious with people around us and catching germs. But that gives us a good reason not to be around some folks that we tried so hard to make excuses for not wanting to be with them. LOL!
ginagina - You definitely don't look like a 5-head or 10-head. You really do look beautfiul. Matter of fact, all the ladies with pics here truly look awesome. It shows how tough we are!
sakura73 - Well even though you're only freezing eggs as opposed to forming embryos, I'm going to tell you and all my funny story. When I was in the prep room getting ready for my eggs to be extracted, the nurse told my husband that he had to go to this 'uh hum.....private room' which had 'uh hum......adult magazines (basically porn mags)'. Well, as he was about to walk down the hallway to the room where nurses were all over the place, I yelled out, "Honey, do us proud!". Needless to say he was embarrassed, put his head down, shook it back and forth just before heading to the 'uh hum......private room'. Moral of the story? You have to find humor in every situation, no matter how bad it can be. And laughter is very good for your health and wonderful for the soul.
Okay, now to the last page and reading all the posts. Guess my idea of going to bed early got thrown out the window. Oh well!

Luv2sing - It takes me about 20min to do my makeup from start to finish. I don't always leave the house on time and I may be late for work on occassion, but damn it that makeup is going on before I walk out the door.
Vangoghpro - Before I started chemo, a good friend of mine that is in remission told me she missed about 3 days total during her treatment. I know it can be scary and nerve-wracking having to hear what others go through but you have to remember that everyone has different experiences with treatment. More importantly, many have different chemo-kazi cocktails and therefore will experience different side effects. Working and home life is manageable. Don't give in to your body feeling just a tad tired. You'd be surprised how a relaxing walk at least 30min a day will do to help with the SEs. I work full time, have a house to maintain and a husband and 6yr old daughter. You have to learn that certain things in the house can be put aside for another time. Don't stress over it. And tTry not to read into everything you read so much because it will only get you scared and worried. Have them give you Xanax or Ativan as a premed the day of your Tx. Trust me when I tell you (and others have as well), the anxiety build-up is from the anticipation of the 'unknown'. When you get through your first Tx you will realize that it's doable.
chick717 - You crack me up. I love how you described the wig because there are days that I just want to rip it off. Must it be that itchy? UGH!
Mary

I went back to work for half days and some days I drove myself. The only reason I didn't drive all the time was it seems I've developed lymphedema and possibly axillary web syndrome. I start my PT tomorrow morning and will head in to work afterwards. I only work four hours but I'm exhausted by the time I get home. There's a gal who takes her tx on the same days I do and she drives herself to and from tx and then heads in to work her full shift ... she is a corrections officer. When you see her you would never guess she's going thru anything. Everyone's different and everyone responds differently. You will be just fine because you've got a lot of strong people on this site who will help get you thru this.
ginagina - Ummmm ... my hair has started falling out to the point of when my husband ran his fingers thru my hair, he came out with a handful. All you have to do is touch it and will come out and brushing or trying to comb it makes it come out more. So I guess I'll be shaving soon, because walking around with a lint roller is really getting on my nerves.
mmdj -- I have a friend who is exactly like you. She will not step a foot out the door without her face done
! I on the other hand will walk out the door singing 'Take me as I am"!
-
gymmom8 so sorry about the headache. I think that was my biggest hurdle with tx1. I'm hoping to avoid next time. I thought it was the deadron and or Zofron.
JenniferK I wish I lived near you to help out. I'm in OR so I can't babysit but PM me if I can help in any way. My children are grown and I don't know how you young girls do it.
mmdj43 I so needed a laugh tonight and I got it from your story!
you ladies are lifesavers!
-
Jennifer K - I had my first herceptin today. After worrying about a reaction to the taxol and not having one (They set a timer to check on you and raise the rate every 10 minutes) After the 2nd raise she told me I could stop worrying, If I was going to have one it already would have and I said what about the herceptin and she said she never seen a reaction to it when it was being given. Still not haveing any SE's tonight. The herceptin took 1 1/2 hours for first round, but will probably be under and hour once we are doing it alone. Hope this calms your fears some It still doesn't solve your transportation and childcare problems, but herceptin reduces the rate of recurrence by 50%. Thats big. If it was 25% it goes down to 12% just by taking that for a year. It think its worth it, or I would not be doing it since I am a stage 1 with no node involvement. But doing chemo, herceptin, radiation and Femara, I go from 25 to 30 % down to less that 5%. I want to see my grandkids grow up the oldest is 12 and the youngest is almost 4 and my son just got married last month. So I am going to fight. No matter what the challenge you need to do the same. I will pray for you. Annette
-
Woo Hoo to everyone who was either hooked-up, hooked-in, poked, prodded and otherwise felt like their body wasn't their's today. Lots of toxic stuff in circulation tonight, but its intent is for the greater good.
Apparently, this is the $1000 Martini. For Real. It is probably "SO 3 months ago"...but it was new/news to me.
Premiere Gals - NanaAnnette, Bolerodiva and Bwbly
2nd Show Gals - mmjd43, knowledgeforpower, gymmom, dawnmrn, ipursuit, JenniferK, HazDC, MaryHH and kim40.
Good rest, hydrate and healing thoughts to all of you tonight.
gina
Note: Oops, not yet for Dawnmrn..but that day is coming soon enough ~ Drink up!
