CristIC  - I really feel for you as I remember everyday looking to see if there was any hair growth on my head or around my eye area.  The photo posted is my hair growth 7-8 months after chemo, chemo finished Oct 07, headscarf came off in May 08.  I remember my oncologist telling me that he'd never known anyones hair to take so long to come back, I reckon mine took a lot longer than most.

I haven't read through every single post so not sure if this has been recommended before but for thin eyebrows MAC does a fab crayon pencil - I use one called Lingering Eyebrows, I've found it works so much better than most eyebrow pencils and is a lot quicker than powder, although maybe my powder applying technique is just useless.

Hi, Maeve.   It's nice to have a visitor from the other side of the pond.  You can advise us on fashion and makeup over there!

Your hair looks really cute in your avatar.  You look so young!  It's lousy to have to go through all this at such a young age.  Have you met any of the other young survivors here?  Our Beth is still a baby.

Thanks for the tip on the MAC pencil.  I'll check that out.

Anyone have a suggestion for a hair dressing of some sort?  I've been noticing that I have a section of hair in the back that is losing its curl and is just sort of wild and frizzy.  I need something to tame it after it is dried.

Tina- its important to get a base coat, not just a clear polish for your toes. The base coat will help the yellowing, but unfortunately, it has to do with lack of sunlight and oxygen which makes the nail turn yellow under dark polish. You're not supposed to leave dark polish on for more then two weeks. BUT, if you get a professional base coat, it's clear with a hint of blue in it, it will help a lot, and also finishing with a top coat will help from chipping.

But base coat on the toes is essential.

Raye and I go round and round about tanning every single year. It's hilarious that we keep doing it, too. And we always say the same stuff to each other, about why we shouldn't tan... we talk each other down from the tanning bed...LOLOL

I've had tons of experience with spray tanning in the salon... barbe, for the wedding, you will want to make an appointment for an AIRBRUSH spray tan, three days before the wedding.

This is NOT the same as a spray tan booth in hollywood tans. This is where you drop your clothes, and a girl stands there with a spray airbrush gun, and sprays you down. They will go over certain spots to define muscles (even if they aren't there...lol). If you choose this option, talk to me a week before and I'll give you the tips about what to wear, and what to do before and after, and why you need to do it three days before.... just keep me posted.

Raye, I'm going to start testing some store tanners next week....Not happy. I know how bad tanning is. We all do. But, like a drug, its addictive... the feel of the lights, the smell of the caramel lotion, omg.... you know what i'm talking about....lolol

LOL - and we always end up going anyway!! OH YEA BABY - I can smell the bed as I type...and the accelerator cream, another healthy product! I can feel the warmth of the new bulbs...just a bit of a base maybe? And there is always the towel faithfully covering my face.

Yes, a gross story about nail polish. Before breakfast, do you mind? I think it was a dark pink color, anyway, I piled layer after layer on my toes all summer long - didn't take any off and start anew. Too much trouble. Long story short, when I DID end up taking the polish off, my big toenail was almost black at the top and that top part of the nail fell off. Like Beth said, my nail was getting no oxygen at all. Learned the hard way.

TT - do you use any product on your hair before you dry it? I mentioned that John Frieda Frizz Ease, which works really well in giving me a bit of curl, but taking away the frizz. I use it on my damp hair before blowing dry.

Raye and Beth, you've both commented on my lack of wrinkles.  Well, a big part of the reason, I'm sure, is that I was always too busy to be out in the sun.  Plus, I'm such a fragile flower Laughing that I get the vapors from too much heat and sweat.  Just like a true Southern belle, except I'm a Northern Yankee with pure Slavic blood.

I wonder if I can find base coat with that blue tint you mention.  I shall make it a quest.

Was reading in the new Lucky magazine (I think) that a poll taken of their readers said that they favored Aquaphor ointment as the best lip moisturizer.  I know it comes in little tubes for your purse besides those big tubs.

There was also mention of new eyebrow products, gels, I think, that have tiny fibers which add fullness to sparse brows.  Just looking online, I see there are several.  Laura Geller, Talika, etc.  This is worth a try, particularly for those growing their brows out after chemo.

Hey, my chicas! I know that I've been MIA for awhile, but scanning the latest posts here has gotten me pumped for summer beauty fun! I'm having my implant surgery on April 9th and am terrified that they'll come out looking ridiculous or that I'm headed for capsular contracture because I've had rads. My plan was to get a good base tan before surgery and then start back about a month later, using self-tanner to keep my spirits up. But I've been incredibly busy and have only tanned once, so I guess I'll just hold off now until May or so and maybe use the self-tanner anyway. It's just that smell...ugh!

I'm really interested in christl's comment about getting a prescription for Latisse from her PS and am wondering if her insurance covered it? It really pisses me off that this new wonder drug is completely available now and those of us with sparse, crappy lashes after chemo don't have first dibs! I think that medical insurance should cover it just as it covers wigs and some lipos. I also think it should cover eyebrow tattoos for those of us who never got much back post-chemo. I mean, after all, my lashes would still be long & lush if I hadn't had cancer and I'd actually have eyebrows too. Argh!

I'm also interested in the talk about moisturizers. I thought that I'd found an ideal face cream in Dove's night cream, but now it's nowhere to be found (though I can order it through amazon.com). It moisturizes so well, isn't greasy, smells great, and has no parabens! Anyway, I've been trying Aveeno and Garnier and can't seem to find anything satisfactory. I might try your suggestion, Tina, and check out Aubrey Organics. The Olay brands make me dizzy...too many of them to choose from and now they just came out with the Pro-X line. Oy!

Has anyone tried the new mascaras that have "tubes" to coat and extend the lashes (Loreal has one)?

Yes-- the tubular technology works... but its a bigger pain in the ass to get off your lashes when you wash your face. I found a good technicue tho. After I put the purpose wash on my face as I'm washing it,  I literally pull the tubes off my lashes gently... then I use my eyemakeup remover pads and it's off.

So it's a total buy for a special night out, but for every day wear I think the regular loreal double extend works almost the same.

I swear by my oil of olay lotion-- it's not one of the crazy ones-- it's called COMPLETE for sensitive skin fragrence free 15 spf light non greasy formula. I've been using it for years. It's the only thing that doesn't make me break out, and it doesn't smell.

Marin Your implants are gonna look awesome-- just remember it takes time to heal and settle, and the final aesthetic outcome will not be revealed right away.

Raye lmao at the accelerator- I had forgotten all about that... omg whats the one that totally tingles your skin to the point you feel like its frying?

Tina I know your skin is so beautiful from avoidning the sun. my mom too-- she looks so beautiful and she tells me to avoid the sun like the plague.... but it feels and looks sooooo good.

Marin, you're doing it!!!  I had been wondering what you had decided.  Good luck to you.  I know it is scary but I'm sure it will go well.  Glad to see you back and keep us posted.

I looked up that brow makeup in Lucky and it's E.L.F. Treat and Tame.  They say it's only $3.00!  Where do you buy this stuff?

Marin - I am so excited for you! April 9! Chica con muy bonita boobies (and everything else)!!

I love my Oil of Olay as well. I use the daily regenerist serum, so lightweight and soaks right into my skin. At night I use Night of Olay regenerist something (you are right, they have sooo many products now), but I find it a bit too moisturizing and it sometimes gives me a pimple or two.

Well I do declare, Miss Scarlett that I do indeed put a towel on my face to keep it fresh and pale. Seriously TT, you do have some beautiful skin.

ooh beth, something like arrghh, can't remember, but I think that accelerator has fire or diablo in the name. LOL.

The ELF stuff is available at KMarts.  Of course, there are no KMarts within 25 miles of here..........

The Olay I'm using now is the first Olay I've ever used.  Yes, it makes me crazy that they are constantly changing products.  I think they all tend to so that we have to keep buying the latest thing.  Have you ever watched sheep being herded by a Border Collie???  LOL

Happy spring!  I feel the need to refresh.  Well, today I am going in for a lube job - for my car, that is!  Greasing up old Nellybelle.  Actually, an oil change.  Oil, grease, what the heck.  At least SHE is getting attention.

Poor Beth, snow down south.  It's perfectly sunny here in MA.  I did see on the weather this morning that NY might get snow and couldn't believe it!  Well, go knock 'em dead.  (Maybe this is a bad thing to say considering the job in question.  ! ) Are you wearing your new Ugg boots?

barbe, you are wicked.  Of course, I am not...........  And, yes, I've heard of their uses for Crisco!  I'll never look at another Toll House cookie the same way again.

About face lotions, I had gotten a sample of Dove Sensitive essentials day lotion and love it. I looked and found it at Walmart. It is fragrance free and I think spf 15.

Marin, you will look fabulious with your new boobs.

It is sunny but cool here in the foothills of NC on this beautiful first day of spring but calling for freeze and frost warnings the next 3 nights.

Gals - Iove reading your posts! Too funny. So I am MILES away from getting the fresh/2009 spring look, but I do have a question for you all.

My hair is falling out. I cut it super short (buzz) on Sunday and had a nice "sport girl on the go" look, like I was ready for a trek up Annapurna. Ok now, it continues to fall out - spiky bits, but randomly and sporadically for a very SPLOTCHY I MUST BE SICK look. What is the best way to get is smooth? Wet razor and shaving cream? Electric razor? Nothing?  I did take my braun electric razor to part of it yesterday, but the effect was bad (it is rough, not smooth) and you can still see my dark roots/follicles, and that section is really, really dry. Any suggestions?

Hi, hon.  I see you're just starting chemo.  Good luck to you.  We're all here to help you along any way we can.

As far as making the head smooth, I've heard that some gals used sticky paper, like a lint roller, every day to grab out the hairs as they loosened in the follicles.  This could go on for a little while, depending upon how your body reacts.  I wouldn't shave any more so that it will be easier for the tape to grab the hairs if they're a bit longer.  Don't worry, you will have a smooth top soon enough!!!

Many gals wash their scalps with a very mild shampoo and just pat it dry.  Some use moisturizers but I never did.  Maybe you will get some other recommendations here.

Since your last tx is 5/1, you will have regrowth not long after that.  Now, THAT's something to look forward to!  I finished mid-May and finally saw re-growth just after the Fourth of July.  Everyone's different, though, so don't panic about it.  I thought I'd see re-growth in 3-4 weeks and when I didn't, I was sure I would never have hair again.  LOL  Believe me, we all have the same fears.

    Keep us posted.

gina: I posted pretty much the same question on another thread..the suggestion was NOT to shave with a razor that you could possible get a an infection with ingrown hairs... our bodies go through enough with all the chemicals being injected to us.  I had my head buzzed a couple of weeks ago because of scalp tenderness.  I still have that on the very top of my head..it hurts to rub what little hair is left against the growth...so wearing a wig gets annoying after awhile.  I thought about using the electric razor, but you said that didnt help...what to do???

I will be on Tx3 this thursday..I started mid Feb, so hope it is okay I check in here every so often.

Honestly, I know a lot of people say don't shave with a razor b/c if you cut yourself you'll get an infection, but if you have someone like a man who totally knows what he's doing help you out, you should be fine. A tiny little cut with a little neosporin and a bandaid put on it, is not likely to send you to the hospital during chemo.

If you use an electric razor, you could use the lint roller like Tina said, and then just wait another cycle of chemo for everything to release, and you should be completely smooth. BUT, some women never get completely smooth, and some are okay with it, others are not, which is where that regular brand new, clean razor would come into play.

and smile, not to be the bearer of shitty news-- but when I had hot flashes I couldn't believe how much sweat poured out of my bald head... I felt like with hair, at least the hair caught the sweat... hang in there!!!!

I definately agree with you BethNY...I never knew how much my bald head sweats!  I decided to use my bf's electric razor...he was too nervous to try to shave my head...it actually feels much better! Thanks for the comments about the razor versus the electric razor...Much Appreciated!!

Duct tape, ladies....use duct tape to gently pulll out loosening hair. My own experience was pretty easy because once my hair started falling out (and I had had it buzzed very closely right away), it only took 4-5 days for my head to be nearly all bald. But tape helps and there's no chance of nicks or burns.

Sheila....thanks for the mention of Dove Essentials. I haven't seen that line yet, but will be on the lookout. Also thanks for your kind words about how my boobs will look...in fact, thanks to all of you, my super chicas. I am really scared that I'll look like a freak and cannot stop obsessively looking and every before & after gallery I can find. Sigh......

What's your favorite razor?  I used to swear by those blue Good News, but of late they seem to dull right away and I knick myself.

The "keeper" razors prices are all over the place and I want to buy what works once and for all.  How many blades do you like?  Which brand?

I only use the Venus Vibrance... there are some new ones now... they have four and even five blades, and a HUGE moisture strips on both ends. I am currently using the venus Divine.

    love the nails....

there's something about the ones that vibrate, that allow the blades to get the hair out better. Honestly, I don't know if it really changes things, I've just been using them for so long, I don't think about using one that doesn't vibrate. The batteries last forever....I think I've changed it one time. And you can use any of the blade heads in the entire venus collection, with the same razor blade-- you just pop the heads off and they change very easily.

I don't use any shave gel or cream or stuff like that.... just the razor-- the blades are held between these huge gel/moisture thingys and it's all I need.

OMG Tina, that is too sweet! My girl would never stand for it...how did you get her to sit still for that long?

On the razor topic, I'll say that I'm very picky about mine, but can't remember the brand names (I'm at work right now). I think it's the Sensor for Women with a double blade that I still use on my legs, though they seem to be discontinuing it in some stores. And I use one of those vibrating ones in the shower for my underarms. Then I carry disposables with me in case I notice the need for a touchup (am I obsessive or what?). I still use old fashioned shaving cream on my legs because I like the clean feeling of it. Though I wonder what happened to the menthol kind...do you suppose it had some negative effect and they pulled it?
