Sahalie - once I rented an older house that I was actually thinking of buying. When the first gas bill came I thought they had made a computer error because it was over $500 and that was 25 years ago! Turns out the house averaged $400 per month (times 12) in heating costs.
I spoke with my uncle and told him it had the original windows and he said it was simple - all I had to do was replace the windows. I informed him there were 26 windows! Needless to say, I did not buy it. Other than the heating costs, it was a great house.
And yes, you do need to get names and serial numbers off all your staff and do some research on values. It is a treasure hunt. I love a treasure hunt!
-
Kathleen. Windows for sure. Our little house is about 20.00 per month due to the windows. I bought them when Sears was having a nice big sale. We are where we get the ocean breezes too which can be something else depending on the weather. There is only one window facing west so that helps. I also got a new water heater which is key. I always look for the big blue E on the tags.
About the treasures. I will get names and whatever else info and share it here. I will also look it all up on google to see what I can find. This will be fun. We have an old Gibson stove in the main house which is a classic and I will save it at all costs and I bet it will cost.

What are your favorite flowers and shrubs that you plant each spring?

I love the wild and fantastic cosmos. Black-eyed Susans. Roses. Primroses.
Just about anything yellow as those draw the Bees. Red the hummingbirds.
My daffodils are in mid bloom. Some finished. Tulips are getting ready to burst.
I love them all.
-
I'll be planting a riot of zinnias, all sizes, in one of my gardens this spring to remind me of my grandfather, who had gazillions of them.
-
Tina. Is that you posing pretty?
I too adore zinnias. They are a hardy flower to be sure.

In honor of your grandfather * Tina. Plant away. I will too. Do you plant by seeds?
Edited to resize picture. : )

Check out this fun and whimsical site.
It caught my eye and struck my fancy so to speak while checking out seeds and garden treasures.
Olive Barn® | Sustainable Living Garden Home Store
Plus it's a GREEN place. Kudo's to them for that.

-
What great zinnias, S. Are they yours?
Yes, that's little Tina a few years ago..........
Here's a favorite seed source of mine. Of course, I am in the Northeast, a very different climate than yours. http://johnnysseeds.com/
I will be starting my seeds around April 1. We can't plant outdoors until Memorial Day, and even then we've been known to have a late frost. Have been cleaning up all sorts of debris left over from January's ice storm today.
-
Well Little Tina is a star and cute.
Not my garden but the building looks just like one of our small barns and will hopefully look like that picture when the flowers are in bloom.
I bought a Cecile Brunner rose the other day.
They are great climbing roses and remind me of my childhood at my grandma's.
We have to plant most things in those wire baskets due to the mighty moles.
Thanks for the johnnyseeds link.
I tend to pick up packets of seeds on sale when I see them.
We have to watch out for frost here too. It's a cold day today.
Rain tomorrow hopefully for our dry state.

I am not really a gardener but I have had my moments. Once, in a rented house, there was a vegetable garden that had been let go for a long time. I finally went out and cleaned it up and pulled all the dead stuff. Imagine my surprise when, in the spring, a lush garden of violets grew. Violets are one of my favorite flowers. Or the time I had a morning glory growing where three white hydrangea bushes were. They choked the poor hydrangea bushes til they didn't bloom anymore. Out of sheer frustration, I chopped everything down. I had sticks about a foot or two sticking out of the ground. I thought "how lovely" and you've now killed everything. Surprise, surprise, those hydrangeas came out the next year bigger and fuller and downright glorious in the spring.
In my younger days I liked pulling weeds - there was something satisfying in that and Lord knows I have lived in some properties where yard maintenance was high and I had plenty to keep me occupied. These days I can't get down to plant anything although I direct others very well!
I do miss working in the soil and getting my hands dirty. If I had my way, I would live in a Victorian house surrounded by lilac trees/bushes and hydrangeas. Can you tell purple is my favorite color?
S - I am so jealous you have that old house - I would prefer an old house any day over a brand new one - the charm, the character and the craftsmanship. Love it, love it, love it.
-
Sahalie, rent a power washer (or a person to do it for you) to clean your wooden deck. If it's pressure treated, that's all you have to do. If not, its the best way to prepare it for resealing. Takes off all the crap and stains. Works for cedar siding too.
I have a patio made of stamped, tinted cement/concrete that looks like terra cotta tiles. It's awesome, not as expensive as other things and easy maintenance. Can't wait till it's warm enought to get out there!
Love zinnias. They look like candy, don't they? Or frosting flowers. We have a bakery down the street that makes zinnia cupcakes -- chocolate cupcakes decorated with one big frosting zinnia on top. Ditto sunflowers. Totally fun and delicious.
-
Oh, just saw this about the zinnia cupcakes and will HAVE TO make some of those. What a great idea!
-
Kathie. What a great idea. I will do that. Thanks. Power wash and stain. We are knee deep in projects. We have to put new stairs on the little house and will widen them this time. I think it will add charm to that little jewel of ours.
Kathleen. Your patio sounds beautiful. I would like an exposed aggregate patio here rather than a deck but it would cost an arm and a leg to replace.
I just planted one of these day before yesterday. They get huge so I hope I put it at the right place. I tend to over plant. The picture below is a full grown one. Mine is still about three feet high. It's bare root so if it gets way out of control this year then I can replant it next year.
It's a "Kew Rose."
-
Beautiful roses! Named after Kew Gardens?
I love the old roses and planted some many years ago. Unfortunately, I've lost most of them to severe winters and salt from the roads and tumbling down stone walls. My favorites are the rugosa roses. I particularly like the Moss Rose. Are you familiar with it?
There was a place in California that specialized in old roses. I think it was called Roses of Yesterday and Today. I wonder if it's still in business. Will have to search the 'net for it.
Two more days until Spring!
-
I think the Kew Rose is named after the gardens.
I love roses and will have to check out the two you mentioned.
Is this it Tina? http://www.rosesofyesterday.com/roseo.htm

Look what I found !
Forgotten treasures begging to be claimed and cleaned up for a new life.
I love these finds.
-
Yes, yes, that's them! Thank you for finding this. I remember Madame Hardy, Madame Pierre Oger, the Moss rose, cannot remember which one but the oldest. The damasks have the most divine fragrance if you like making potpourri.
Love those old lawn chairs. I remember my parents' green metal chairs. I used to tip them over, put them head to head, and throw a blanket over them to make a tent. Little people can crawl right through those chair rails to get in and out. What memories.
Inside the house, I just got a new dishwasher but haven't installed it yet. Nothing too much going on decor-wise as I'm trying to concentrate on taxes, etc.
-
Those chairs are gorgeous. That whole picture is beautiful. I love finds like that too. My sister and I go to this auction every other week. I swear it keeps my spirits up. I bought 3 tables from the fifties for $5.00 (all three). Two are end tables and one I think is a coffee table. They were painted a deep orange - a very poor paint job. I am going to sand them down, paint them cream and stencil a checker board on them - I think. They are two tiered so I am thinking of another stencil on the top tier and a touch of black around the spools of the legs. Any other suggestions?
-
I love this thread. It's a breath of fresh air.
Tina. I'm glad that is THE Rose place. A tent player here too. My kids would take all the cushions off the couches and throw blankets over them to make secret passage ways. So fun.
Is this one of your chairs Tina?
Kathleen. I LOVE those old to new again wonderful treasures from our past. We sure were lucky to have what we had. Now I find my kids love to find the vintage treasures too which makes me very happy. One of my sons makes the most incredible benches and furniture out of the old barn wood from a couple of our old barns that just don't have the gitty up to stay up any longer. One is actually being held up by a huge and I mean huge wild berry bush. I'm talking 12 feet by infinity.
We found an old rusty frame of something a few years ago on the farm. Have no idea where it came from as it must have been hidden away amoung the wonders in one of the barns. It was just the frame so my son added wood slats to it and made me the most neatest plant stand or whatever. I love it and have it in my back yard and in the spring and summer I set two of my huge asparagus ferns on it. I love it. Here is a picture (not mine) so you get an idea.

Mine is rusted and not quite as modern. It's actually a shell of a stand.
Your stenciling and ideas sound wonderful. Plus your great and frugal table finds. Way to go. I really like your painting idea of the tables. I've always liked tables with a checker board painted on them. So inviting.
-
I just looked at my calendar and see that Easter is only three weeks away.
Do any of you decorate the house for each holiday? I still do to some degree. It's the child in me.

-
Sahalie - I once found a wrought iron chair (like an ice cream chair) painted orange curb side for the trash. My uncle cut out a board in a circle to fit the bottom which I then covered in batting and a cool material with seed packets printed on it. I painted the whole thing red. It was so fun. A few months later they put the table and other 3 chairs out for trash pickup. I had a whole set!
Now that it is officially spring, I feel the need to 'feather' my nest.
-
Kathleen. Wow what a "meant to be" find. Your chair redo sounds so perfect. Seed packet material is something I would love to find. I'll have to go search when I have time. I bet it is so cute. I'm thinking things with it like maybe "garden aprons" etc.
That set was meant to come to you.
Happy Spring to all our wonderful Home Decorating ladies here !
I went to google and look what they are using today. How cute is this. Eric Carle's unique art work with tissue paper and an illustration from one of his most recognizable books.
-
Oh, I wish you could all come here this summer for the Master Gardeners' Garden tour we have here in RI. The Master Gardeners Program is run by the Univ. of RI extension service & each year they have a tour to raise money for the program. It's awesome! I have to try to post some photos I took from a past tour. Both of these photos are from a garden down the street from me which was on the tour. I love the little retreat, with the rocker, which was full of a collection of watering cans & gardening books:

-
OOOOH Kathi. I'm loving that walk way and secret garden place. I love little coves of respite with gardens around. Your pictures are lovely.
I was out mowing the front and back lawns this morning at 8 since we are due for some much needed rain.
Yesterday I planted up a storm of flowers and transplanted struggling plants that needed more room. They looked happier almost immediately.
Ok the other day I found a find for all of us. An idea that really is wonderful. I hope I can still find the picture to share with you.
It kind of reminds me of Kathleen's amazing find but a little different in that the chair is being used as a vine holder. It's a treasure to be sure.
A wrought iron chair was found with no seat and all rusted. So the treasure finder put it in a container and planted a tomato plant and other herbs. So as the tomato (or maybe it was beans) grows * the vines will wrap around the chair. It looks so neat.
I'm still trying to find the chair in the planter but in the mean time look what else I found.
I like this idea too. I do love to save old vintage wooden chairs though. Repaint and they look wonderful.
Wooden chair find.

-
Gotta get me some of those! I love integrating "things" into my gardens, benches, birdhouses, a wooden plane once, old watering cans, etc.
-
It's raining pots and pans here. Yippie we sure need any amount we can get.
After planting yesterday I can see the Primroses smiling. Kind of.

Barbe. Hi. An old wooden plane would be fun to use as a planter or just set out in the garden.
-
I once passed someone's house who had a bird house really high up in the tree. It had large letters on it that said "Air Mail". hehehehehehe
-
Sahalie - you changed your avatar! Is it you? I thought the other one was you? Who is the real Sahalie?
-
Does anyone here read the British Country Living, available at Barnes and Noble's and some upscale bookstores? They have gorgeous photography and gardening articles.
Since I'm up to my ears in year end bookkeeping, I have not been visiting here much. Will surface soon!
-
Tina, I'm assuming that's two bunnies and not a two-headed bunny!
-
Kathleen. I'm back to me in my avatar. I've tried my feet in my floppers as an avatar, me on a hill hike but back to me it is. I like to change my furniture around too.
Tina. I haven't seen the British Country Living. I'll have to take a look at it when I go to the book store. I want to buy The Shack. I've heard so many amazing things about it so I want to read it. First I have to finish the book I'm just about done with. Tina, your avatar is showing up as the dreaded red x on my screen. Anyone else?
Back to our house and garden basics. Today was glorious and I totally wiped myself out working in the yards. Also want to buy a new umbrella for the deck table. We are due to high 70's the rest of the week and weekend.
Today I bought some new plants and one is an Aubretia ground cover. Purple in color. My favorite.

Next year it should be huge. I love anything purple.
Happiness in the yard. Bag of soil mix. Bag of tiny bark for where ever. Knowing where the trowl is. and sunshine.
Barbe. I have a birdhouse that one of my son's made for me. I have no idea if the birds use it as it is in it's own little forest area and I don't want to bother it in case it is occupied.
Do you all save your dryer lint to put out in the yard in Spring for the birds to use in their nests?
I have about two cups full and will use a strawberry basket in a tree for them to find.
Have a nice evening everyone !
Sahalie
