Well I changed mine from the team mascot for the local race for the cure, Penelope B. Hound to the picture of me and my mom that is in the 2009 Through Healing Eyes calendar. It is a calendar of local BC survivors and the mission of Through Healing Eyes is to promote breast cancer awareness through education, provide inspiration to those affected and to make breast cancer diagnosis and treatment available to those unable to afford care.

They haven't updated the site with the new calendars yet but check out www.throughhealingeyes.org and find out how to order your own.

My original avatar was a picture from when I was intially that showed me with hair.  My avatar is now a picture of myself and my son at the closing ceremonies of the SF Komen walk a few weeks ago.  If you look closely at my shirt it says "Mom, you dying isn't an option" Moke (my son's nickname) which is what my son said to me when I was dx'd.  Underneath his Komen shirt is a shirt that says the same thing. He wore it on the last day of the walk.  He had women coming up and telling him  that they were about to quit the walk but then they saw the back of his shirt and they remembered why they were walking so they completed the walk.  I am more proud of my son for doing this than any words could ever say.

I like flowers so picked a flower that came with the computer and software first when I joined breastcancer.org, then, changed to an animal that came with the computer and software (turtle), and then picked a cat, because I love cats and they have always been a part of my family for many years.  You know what, I may change my avitar who knows when too.

On the way to my first oncology appointment I began to cry and my daughter who since she was a year and a half old could always make me laugh, began to sing "we're off to see the wizard..."And when I first moved to NY and would be kind of naive someone would say " your not in Kansas anymore Dorothy" So, I guess it is kind of my theme and also, I think that Dorothy represents hope and we all need that, we also need brains to navigate this road were all on and a heart and oh yeah a little dog too!

This is a great thread!  Kiwikan, I LOVE that photo of your cat!  LOL

My avatar came from a drawing I did for the blog pages I started on my website after my diagnosis & surgery.  I called it "The Well-Dressed Survivor."  It was a way to  goof on my lopsided boobs after my right slab-ectomy.  Then, of course, I added my radiation tattoos, which you can't see here because of the small size.  On the blog I've posted a number of versions of it wearing different hats & high heels & tattoos.  There is also the animated version, "The Boob that Glows in the Dark" which I created after I started rads.  Scary, really, how much time I can fritter away making these things....

I haven't updated the blog pages in a month, because I got sick during rads & was exhausted, then I had to go back to work, then I started tamoxifen, so, you know how it goes......but here's the link if you want to check out the rest of my doodles:

BTW, it choked me up to read about AlaskaDeb's avatar.  She's not doing well.  It's wonderful & poignant to have that story here.

How odd, I swore I responded to OmahaGirl's...guess it got lost!

Anyway, LOVE the Wizard of Oz reference.  Also, I think those pics of the Well Dressed Survivor are FANTASTIC!  Very cool, indeed!

Of course, I am also a fan of cute animals!

What's happening with AlaskaDeb?  I have to go check....I thought she was doing a little better?

I like to change my avatar based on moods and different times of the year.  I just changed mine today.  Always have been interested in American Indians and I was looking for something that would relate to ThanksGiving.  I typed in Indian Summer and found this lovely picture there.  So it's my ThanksGiving picture - of a true warrior - sending out strength and love to those who need it.

Also, I'm glad you like the Well Dressed Survivor.  I have a ton more versions with different hats & shoes, so I need to get back to my blog & update it!

My avatar is of Jewely my German Shepherd...she was a rescue from the pound. Her previous owner left her in the pound's overnight cage at 10 months old. Luckily a friend who rescues and finds homes for dogs got her out. Once I saw her I adopted her..she was in pretty sad shape but not any more. I had to put down my 14 year old German Shepherd the month before and the house seemed empty without another fur kid until Jewely. She is now 5.

I initially had a monkey as an avatar. I love monkey's but it was something my nephew always said to me, "Do not monkey around with your health anymore".........so i thought, how appropriate! Then as my hair started to grow back, i started to LOOK like a monkey so I figured it was time for a change.LOL. I chose Lucille Ball because she is my favorite. She always makes me laugh when I watch I Love Lucy. Crazy red-head, as I am too :)

My picture was taken in Florida, near St. Petersberg.  A beautful sunset, clebrating the union of Big Tree and Little Tree.  I was in Florida for the 2008 FORCE conference in Tampa (Facing our risk of cancer empowered) www.facingourrisk.org

All of you probably think I am crazy but my avatar is one of the baby snakes that I produced last year.

When I was little our family went to Florida every year.  Each year my Dad and I would catch a lizard and bring it all the way home to Indiana. I have always loved reptiles and I guess it just evolved to snakes.

My avatar is my 19.5yr old cat, Mouche.  He and I are in the same place physically, bones aren't what they should be.  Before I was dx w/mets last Nov, he would climb into bed under the blankets with me and then he would put his paw on my cheek, it seemed that he couldn't get close enough to me. As summer came he would lie along the top of my head on the pillow, sometimes purring in my ear.

I took this pic at night with a phone camera which didn't have a flash, so I used a LED torch to light his face and it worked really well. By using a torch you can put it at any angle and get totally different effects.  Until the cat gets bored!

What kind of snake is that, Kendra?  I like snakes as long as they're not too big and they don't  bite!

    Mouche is a cutie, Sheila.

I changed my avatar 4 weeks ago after having my first negative six-month-post surgery mamm and then seeing mybreast surgeon.  I was so relieved, I wanted to cry, but instead, I went shoe shopping and bought those red heels to go with my new Easter dress!

Oh ladies, It's just awesome to see this thread revived!  I love to read the stories about the pics, because it says so much about you.

I love love LOVE Mouche Cat!  If I am crying about something (and I do tend to weep), Rosie O'Donnell (my cat who has no tail) comes to me, and if I am lying on my pillow in bed, she will walk back and forth in front of my face so her fur gently catches my tears.  Once she is satisfied, she will stand above me, fur slightly fluffed, and gently put her paw on my face.  All this time, she purrs lightly.

I am SO a cat person.

Rosie Cat used to lay on top of my head at night time until I got married.  She stopped doing that until I went in the hospital last month for colon cancer.  When I came home, she hasn't left my side, and howls if she doesn't know where I am.

So, I totally love the picture of Mouche Cat, because my cat sounds a lot like him!

Yep, that's my car (my wife calls it my midlife crisis).  I was a Herbie the Love Bug fan as a kid and with young kids I decided to keep things light and fun for them.  My car has turned into my metaphor for life.  It is my vehicle that takes me on my journey through life and thus I adopted the online name, Route53, many years ago.

Route53 eventually became the name of my blog. http://route53.wordpress.com

Well, I hate to admit it, but I chose this pic because it was the only one that would load and it took me so long to figure out how to do it, I didn't want to try again with a better picutre.  Yeah, it is a goofy smile, but I do remember having fun at the time.

Baywatcher - what a gorgeous view - I love Key West. Wish I could sit there and have a cup of coffee!

This picture was taken at my daughter's wedding in April - right after I had taken off my wig! It was a beautiful day.
