Yoga after implants... how soon?
Comments
-
The title of my topic says it all. I' ve signed up for a John Friend workshop in early May and I'm getting my implants next week. Can I do it?

I think you should be alright, that's almost two months.
Arms over the head would be my concern.

I had a unilateral mx late November and have an expander in (exchange scheduled for 3/17). I tried to do yoga a number of times during my recovery period, but I have found that it gave me more pain than comfort. Down dog, in particular, is a killer for me, as is any of the positions that put all my weight on my left (mx side) arm. And don't even talk to me about handstands, because I can't imagine my left arm would stay stable. I find this all very depressing, because I used to really love yoga, but I think my yoga days are probably over. Oh well, small price to pay for recovery, but I really do miss it. That pec muscle just will never be the same.

Digger, DON'T GIVE UP!!!
I took a very gentle Yoga at the cancer center at the end of chemo and directly after bilateral Mx (12/2) with recon. (I had one step implants with AlloDerm in Nola). I was able to do the easy things - they didn't do down dog at the cancer center.
I just finished RADs last week,(my skin is unhappy, but I think starting to get better now) and am signed up in my old Yoga class for mid march. I plan to start in the back, maybe back corner even, and just do what I can do. We also have to be careful of Lymphademia when getting back in.Esp down dogs as you say....
I used to be in the front row before all this BC stuff. But, I bet I will be there again, someday!!!
Don't be discouraged! Don't give up.... Your body has been through a LOT. It needs time.
Spring.

I also started taking a gentle healing yoga class given by the cancer center about 2 months after my inital surgery. The leader (cancer facilitator nurse) told me what positions I would want to avoid so early after my surgery and because of scolosis I don't have alot of flexibility in my spine. The faciliator said just do what you can and we will work with that. We don't do the really intense power yoga moves but slow stretching.

I really think all this movement, and the peace and serentity from yoga, is worth it. Even if you can't do it all.
