Natural Estrogen Reducers
Hello all, is anyone on this board trying a natural approach to reducing estrogen like excercise and diet? Is it working? I have just completed 5 years on arimidex and would like to try this but I'm not sure how well it works. When I was on arimidex my estrogen levels stayed at around 7 or 8 and wonder if anybody is monitoring their levels and having success.

I have read that Melatonin would decrease the estrogen level. But I do not how many mg to you have to take. I have to do more research.
And I think by avoiding milk products you can lower you estrogen and progerston.

Hi Tweeti,
I had DCIS and had surgery to take out the worst DCIS. My post-surgical pathology report said I had some remaining LCIS. Six months after that the worst thing they could find was atypical hyperplaisia.
Although I did not do a scientific sturdy, I think this regression was due to supplementing with bio-identical progesterone, taking DIM(diindolymethane) and not eating any meat, eggs or cheese for the last year. All of these were done to reduce my estrogen levels (under the supervision of a doctor who specializes in preventative medicine).
What you want to look at is if your hormones are balanced. I was extemely estrogen dominant(my ratio of estrogen to progesterone was too high).
I will gladly do these things if it means I never have to have another biopsy.
You can email me at lovetennis60@aol.com if you want to discuss this more.

2 very effective estrogen reducers are exercise, which removes free circulating estrogen, and losing extra weight, since fat cells create estrogen.

Skye64,
I am impressed! You are the first person that I've come in contact with, that has finished 5 years of Arimidex. I'm in my first year and scared to death of getting osteoporosis. How did everything work out for you? I'm doing weight bearing exercises and cardiovascular exercise 3-4 times a week in hopes of warding off the side affects of the medication.
On the subject: Drink Rice milk instead of cows milk, stay away from soy, and stay away from sugar - sugar we don't burn and use for energy gets stored as fat, and fat cells carry estrogen.

Exercise is, indeed, the most potent oestrogen reducer. At my last National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund Conference, one doctor mentioned that exercise reduces oestrogen more than any drug that exists (in absolute statistics, too).

Yes! I met with my breast surgeon yesterday for my 3 month follow-up. She couldn't believe how good I looked for just finishing chemo. I told her I had continued teaching Zumba classes through chemo to help keep the side effects at bay...and before I could bring it up, she told me that exercise also reduces reccurence rates! Which is what I knew...but it was good to hear it from her, as I trust her very much!
That is my problem with the "one-size-fits-all" treatment mentality. I realiz that most women are not going to do an hour of cardio every day...but I do. Then there is my sister who will never exercise....yet main stream medicine wants to treat us exactly the same!

hi Navalex, I am sorry to tell you, I am not a finisher with Arimidex. I would like to be one...
I took Tamoxifen 4 month and I stopped it 2 weeks ago. I cannot deal with the SE. They were horrible. Actually I am runner. But with this drug I cannot run anymore. So on Wednesday I will get my first Lupron shot to shut down my ovaries. After 2 shots I will give the Arimidex a try.
If that is not working with me..I will not take any of these drugs anymore. My weight gaines over 15 pounds. And I was a good runner. And I want this back.....cause I am conviced that running again will help me.

I finished 5 years on arimidex and the first year I had a year of Lupron shots as well. The side effects were not that bad for me. The first three months I had the stiffness and joint pains. My body just got used it. I didn't gain much weight 3 or 4 lbs. I kept a healthy diet and exercised. I did have the security of knowing my estrogen level was low and now that I'm off I realize its up to me and its scary like when I finished chemo.

Hello everybody, I.m bluevelvet and I don't know how to use the chat rooms or forems. I had a mamogram in march of 2007 and I ended up going to St.Louis Siteman cancer center. I tried all the meds and I've been on tomoifen for about a year. I'm going to quit the tom. and I need help in finding other things that will help. I'm 69 this month and have a heart problem and asyhma. I just want to feel decent for the rest of my days. If you know any alternative things that will help, I would be so grateful. Bluevelvet

Bluevelvet, you will find many of us here who are balancing our estrogen levels without drugs. These include diet and exercise, supplements like I3C, antioxidants, etc. You will find lots of threads where we have talked about this. Look in the alternatives section and you will see our discussions. Especially check out the discussions on bioidentical hormones, where we are discussing that low progesterone levels, which occur normally after menopause, are the reason we become estrogen dominant as we age. Also check out Dr. Cristiane Northrup's book, The Wisdom Of Menopause. She really explains it all well, and has lots of great advice. This is the book that got me started and convinced me that I did not have to suffer through arimidex to stay healthy. Good Luck!
