Hello,

My name is Natalie and I am 32.I had DCIS with a 30% estrogen-resceptor positive and I had a masectomy on my right side but  I am clean now. I had stopped the OCT after I was diagnosed. I am wondering if there is any safe OCT with less risks that I can take now.

Thanks alot

    Hi Natalie,

There are two types of OCT: estrogen/progesterone containing combinations and progestin only OTC. There is an intricate relationship between the estrogen receptor and the progesterone receptor: generally you need estrogen expression for the progesterone receptor's presence. With a history of ER+ DCIS, it's not clear to me that any estrogen containing OTC would be wise, so as to avoid re-igniting any ER+ DCIS cells. Similarly, while your tissue may not have been tested for PR+ expression, the fact that it is dependent on estrogen and its receptor suggests to me (jmo) that progestin only pills may be not wise also.

Barrier contraceptives are usually advised during child bearing years with a history of ER+ DCIS.
