Radial Scar

I am 34years old and was just diagnosed with a radial scar (after an excisional biopsy).  It showed ductal hyerplasia (not atypical).  I have a strong family history.  My surgeon is telling me this does nothing to increase my risk of breast cancer but I'm finding a lot of conflicting information online.  Should I seek a second opinion?

Was there any reason for the scar? I.e., was it from a prior excisional biopsy? Is the "strong family history" primarily associated with pre- or post-menopausal breast cancer? Has anyone who shares your family history undergone genetic testing for BRCA mutations?

You may want to gather that information and then check with a breast center--preferably one associated with a large teaching hospital. Often they will have genetic counseling services available. Just a "second opinion" isn't as likely to provide you with the answers you are seeking.

    Good luck.

There is no reason for the scar.  My family history consists of my mother being diagnosed with pre-menopausal cancer.  I underwent genetic testing and it was negative.  Since my mother died of the disease in 1987 we have no way of knowing if she was positive.  My maternal grandmother was also diagnosed (although post-menopausal).

I'm 39, and also had radial scar included with my pathology report/dx.  I had LCIS, complex sclerosing lesion(radial scar) intraductal hyperplasia and sclerosing adenosis after a Lumpectomy of my Lt breast last year.  I was told the radial scar doesn't actually mean a 'scar' as we're used to, it's similar to sclerosing adenosis, the cells growing rapidly and out of control.  I don't know if that helps or not, but that's what my Dr. said.
