Supplementing on a Budget

Options

So, buying all these things is going to cost a fortune.

I already have fish oil, glucosomine and Vit D but I am low on that, so I will need to go buy some more.

I just purchased a new supply of Calcium (500mg) with Vit D (500mg) plus Vit K ... Viactiv brand.

What would be your next purchase??

I think the answer depends a lot on what your needs are.  Are you taking glucosomine for joint pain?  Are you in treatments?  What besides bc is of concern regarding your health?

I finished treatment but am on Arimidex. I am post-menopausal.  Yes the joints hurt . The dr rx'd vicodin but the glucosomin is really helping and I hate taking rx meds. I am almost at osteoperosis -- they said osteopenia. No other medical issues.

I know a lot of women experience joint pain while taking arimidex.  Bone loss is another side effect associated with arimidex also.  Hopefully you have doctors who will monitor your bone density as needed.

Glucosomine sounds like a much better option for relief of joint pain than vicoden.  I know glucosomine and condroitin are taken together for joint pain relief, and it seems to help the joint pain, but elevated cholesterol happens for some people.

Some options from the produce aisle that might be helpful are pineapples and ginger.  I was developing an aching left hip last summer.  I drink fresh juice every day, and in august, I started adding a slice of ginger to the mix each day.  My hip doesn't ache anymore.

I take selenium, CLA, calcium, Breast Assured, multivitamin, Arthocare since the glucosamine wasn't doing it for me, and graviola. I want to add CoQ10. I already spend a lot in supplements. Doesn't seem fair that insurance doesn't pay for this stuff if that is my choice.

How or where does one find out if supplement is ok to take with meds? I worry, proabably too much, about interactions. Anyone know of a good resource, book etc?

    EWB-

I check with my naturalpath about interactions. I wonder if a pharmacist at a large pharmacy chain can check on his computer for supplemental interactions?

    Charis-

A good reputable brand that is well priced is the "NOW" brand and most of the Vitamin shoppe brand supplements are fine according to my naturalpath.  I have found good deals on the "NOW" brand on www.swansonvitamins.com where shipping is only $4.99 no matter how large your order is and they send me coupons and special offers so many times shipping is only a few cents.  Another company that has good prices on the "NOW" brand is www.outletnutrition.com but I did not like their shipping charges.

You may want to check out the topic that starts "Calling all survivors" started by Mary Jo, members are sharing what they are doing/taking to stay healthy.

    Wishing you the best.
