Tencel is great; drapes so nicely and feels good.
-
Is it hot? Does it "hold onto" bumps and lumps? Does it wrinkle?
-
Kathi, I had something made of tencel about 15 years ago and it was lovely but wrinkled terribly. Has it been improved?
-
Doesn't wrinkle much these days. I bought a few things years ago that were a Tencel/cotton blend that wrinkled a lot, but the pure stuff is pretty good. It's about like good quality silk or combed cotton, so you can't go wadding it up in a ball, but it's not like thin kinds of silk where you look like crap from just putting on a seat belt. I work in it, Barbe, driving around all day and doing PT with my patients, and I was not all wrinkled at the end of the day. And I have hot flashes and I don't feel hot in it. It's a good fabric for these transitional seasons. And the way it drapes is wonderful. If you find something in your favorite color, it will make that color look incredibly delicious.

Oh, girls, I just bought a parasol. No, of course I don't NEED a parasol, but I am fair-skinned, so I plan to use when I'm strolling through the Kinney Azalea Garden this spring. It arrived today & its waaaaayyy nicer even than it looks on this link; it's absolutely adorable, lacy, beautifully embroidered (you may have to cut & paste these links; I couldn't get them to hyperlink):

Oh, and check out these high heels. I admit that I covet them, but I sooooo cannot justify buying them, it's really kinda sad. I really need a more bling lifestyle....

Well, somebody liked those HOT CFM shoes, outta stock!
http://www.orvis.com/intro.asp?subject=4342&bhcp=1 (tencel clothes)
Neimans by Mail often has Tencel sportswear, very travel-worthy. I like it because it's soft, but has that louche feel of soft linen. http://www.neimanmarcus.com/store/catalog/prod.jhtml?itemId=prod67240030&cmCat=search&searchType=MAIN&parentId=&icid=&rte=%252Fsearch.jhtml%253FN%253D0%2526Ntt%253Dtencel%2526_requestid%253D25490

Thanks for those links, Daff. These are the people whose Tencel clothes I've bought mostly:
Also, whenever ModCloth sells out of something, you can click on "notify me" when they get more in stock, and they do. Believe me, they'll get more of those Prima Donna's again.
Remember that slinky, retro plaid 40's-ish dress I posted here a while ago? I just bought the most beautiful Anne Klein claret-colored peep-toe heels to go with it. YUM! Can't wait till Easter now!
-
LOVE the parasol. LOVE LOOVE the shoes.
Holy crap on the price of those dresses! None of which would cover my mast scars.....sigh.
-
Those shoes are so sexy.
Anyone know of a good website that lists made in USA clothing and such? I am frustrated trying to sift through the internet looking for domestically produced clothes. I do know that Reebok is supposed to still make their shoes here, but how many pairs of athletic shoes can one use?
The politicians may not be able to encode "buy American" policies, but I am trying to do my best. It's frustrating, though, because even American brands incorporate imported stuff. For instance, I drive a Ford, on my third Explorer actually, and absolutely love them. Never had a problem since my first one in 1991. I imagine, though, that it is not totally USA. Nothing much I can do about that but at least it's an American company.
I try to buy locally grown food in season and never buy imported produce at the supermarket. Other than that, though, the clothing is a challenge.

Read Freakin' Fabulous yesterday.
Book report:
1. Very entertaining read. Good to read when you really should be doing something else.
2. Everything here (at least 99%) was stuff I (probably you) already know. Really. The sole exception was the recipes for hors d'ouevres. Did I spell that one correctly? I might want to copy some of them before returning the book to the library.
3. Since Clinton is obviously so correct grammatically, socially, and in the fashion sense, why did he not know not to use the word "freakin'" in his book, never mind title? I know I may be seen as somewhat old fashioned, but that is so vulgar and distasteful. Almost as bad as the word "suck." Come on, has everyone forgotten that freaking is derivative of frigging, which means f---ing? Geez. How can you pretend to be so fabulous when you use words like that in public?
End rant.
Now, I'm waiting for my copy of How to Have Style to come in through ILL.
BTW, when I was in Macy's the other day, buying up all those cosmetics, I noticed rack upon rack of lovely spring shawls. I think I'll have to go back and look those over again as I imagine one would look so pretty over my black suit jacket and "spring" it up a notch. Lent starts this week so Easter cannot be far behind. And, unlike when I was a child, there is no new Easter outfit waiting in the wings.
-
All right, all. In honor of the fashion thread,I changed my avatar. Yes, these are indeed the new high heels.
-
I love those red shoes!!!
Abba, I hate that "s" word, too~~~NEVER use it!
Academy Awards the best ever~~~my PS looks a lot like Hugh Jackman.......
-
I'm lovin' the shoes! I have a problem with pantyhose making slip-on shoes too, well, slippery. I see that a lot of stars don't wear panyhose, but hey, I live in The Great White North and we still have about 3 feet of snow on the ground. I'm still wearing my ugly winter boots! I can see myself doing a "Bambi-on-ice" with shoes that don't have an ankle strap. (Didn't they used to call you F&%k ME shoes?)
-
Oh, those red shoes are WONDERFUL! Kathi, you remind me of Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz.
barbe, I remember the term for certain shoes as being FMPs. The last word is Please. LOL
Don't forget, the stars were in Los Angeles, not Ontario. You would be nuts to go out like that in your climate, even mine here in New England. I know I'm dating myself again by mentioning a little concept like "common sense." Gimme a break.
Didn't watch the awards last night but will have to poke around online for the fashion shots.
Another week starts.
-
Thanks, ladies. Tina, must be a Massachusetts thing, 'cause I remember the term as FMPs also! Barbe, know what you mean about slippery-ness. Sometimes I put a Dr. Scholl's air pillow insole in my shoes which helps. In some shoes, I'm between sizes, so I have room to put on one of those little Peds & that helps, too.
Tina, common sense is, I've discovered, uncommon.

OK, so I have not been able to wear high heels since 8th grade with my first foray into heels and the instant development of bilateral Morton's neuromas (which are as bad as they sound). But a couple of weeks ago I was in Marshalls and fell head over heels (if you'll excuse the pun) over a pair of $15 shoes and a pair of $20 shoes with heels that are actually semi-comfortable (meaning that I'm not keeling over in wracking nerve pain after 10 minutes). I actually wore one pair all day including a 1 mile walk to town after work (but didn't do great after that).
Are there insoles that can help take some of the pressure off/cushion the metatarsal area that takes all the weight?
Thanks (40 years later, wearing heels....)
-
Yes, there are. I will have to look up the name.Meanwhile, they have a bunch of sole stuff near the DSW checkout counter!
-
Is DSW as good as I hear it is?
I have suddenly fallen in love with shoes and want a whole closet full of them. Until I "retired" last April I only had 2 prs- sneakers and a pair of sensible blk pumps. Now that I am not on my feet all day at work, I have found some shoes that are more comfortable and fashionable! DD and DH are most impressed.

I think DSW is hit or miss. The one near me is tremendous-- two floors, although I never find anything upstairs. They do have two or three rows of very high end designer shoes that range up to several hundred dollars, but for the most part, you can get great deals, and almost always find your size. I actually prefer a self style shoe store to the mall, and sitting there waiting forever for the clerk to come out of the back room. (YES, I worked in shoes for years, and I had to run up and down stairs like you can't believe so I'm biased) but I love that I can help myself in DSW, pull up a stool, I hate that they don't have full length mirrors everywhere though, and if I've got several pairs of shoes in my hand, they gladly hand you a large tote to carry everything, so of course, you can shop more.,
I've had some trips there where it's heaven, and I have walked out with four or five pair. Other times, if I'm looking for something specific I find it's a little harder. They carry a ton of brands and selections, and have all sorts of insoles and shoe stuff up front, not to mention purses and accessories. (did I mention the one near me is big?)
You can join their mailing list, and they will send you coupons for 15 or 20% off, so it's worth it to join. Let us know if you find anything good!!

Jorf as far as insoles to make a pump feel better...
First, you should look for a heel that isn't too high, and that has a small platform in the front which will offer more support on the entire foot. Second, a half insole will not cushion or support your foot, so if any inexperienced sales person tries to tell you differently, they are idiots.
You should get the dr scholls gel inserts for woman made for high heels. They sell them at target. You get the insole first, then you go shop for the shoe. It is better to go up a half size and put a fully padded insole in the shoe to cushion your foot, and absorb some of the shock as you move.
If you buy a shoe in your size, and then put the insole in, and the shoe becomes to tight in the toe box, which often happens, then you'll be doing more harm then good.
SOOO- here's my expert shoe advice-- get the insole first, put it in your purse, pop it in the shoe that you're trying on in the store, to ensure you're buying the correct size.
When I think back to my pre cancer days, when I would pound the pavement of Manhattan in 4 inch stilettos like it was nobody's business, never missing a beat, I dont' know how I did it. Now, I tend to have killer shoes, that I literally can only wear to certain events that I know I won't be standing at for a long time. UGH- the things we do to for fashion.
-
When my new maple floors were installed, the owner's manual actually warned not to wear stiletto heels while walking on the floor!!! My new red heels are on the borderline, so if I wear them on Easter while I have company for dinner, I guess I'll have to try to stay on the area rugs!!
Good shoe advice, Beth.
-
I hear you on the Morton's. I have them, too. I suffered thru wearing them for years at work, but I was able to sit when I needed. But I've hiked a lot of hospital halls in heels. Med. high.
I had special platforms/bars on the soles of my nursing oxfords to take the pressure off the ball of the foot--they worked wonders when I was doing clinical.
-
Beth, I think you're probably the first one I know who has read an "owner's manual" for a floor! I bet you're glad you did though. You might want to watch for other people's shoes too. I've seen what heels can to to hardwood which is why I am a laminate kind of gal. No scratches, or dimples or permanent stains....just that fake look and feel.....sigh.
-
BethNY - thanks for the tip on cleaning jewelry - that is awesome. You ladies certainly are fashion mavens. I have a ton of pierced earrings - some I have collected since I got my ears pierced when I was 18. I am 62 now so you do the math. Even if they were not antiques when I bought them they are now!
My problem - my right ear healed itself so now I have to make an appointment at a doctor's to have both re-pierced. I would have done it before but what with the breast cancer I had other priorities and didn't feel like going through the cleaning process required to keep newly pierced ears clean. I would see a doctor not a mall store for the piercing because I am a diabetic and have trouble healing.
I like a purse with a lot of pockets, inside and out. The problem is I can never remember where I put things. I will look at one of those organizers. What I really need is a purse that responds to voice commands and whatever I need pops up.
BTW, since I am now flat, I guess I will be wearing scarfs and chunky necklaces!
-
Last night I saw a lead in for a report on UGG boots, but must have been in the bathroom when it aired. Anyone see it? They said they can cause more harm than good. I LOVE my Ugg boots and say that Ugg is short for ugly, but comfy.
-
My floors are soft pine and they are so beat up that the extra heel marks just add more character. Of course, my house is over 250 years old.
My girlfriend's little sister pierced my ears with a sewing needle when I was about 17 and she was about 14. So, they were a little cock-eyed but who cared? Eventually, I stopped wearing earrings and the holes closed up.
Thankfully, my feet are as trouble-free as my stomach. Cast iron. I have actually never had indigestion to speak of (green peppers and cucs make me burp) and have never had heartburn except for an incident caused by Senokot when I was on chemo. I haven't had so much as a head cold in at least 15 years. I cannot understand why I got cancer........
Years later I decided to wear earrings again. I just greased up the posts of some solid gold earrings and pushed them through the scar tissue. No problem. However, I do agree that if you are diabetic or have any healing issues you should go to a medical professional for a clean job.
Let us know about the UGGs. I don't wear them but loved my fleece-lined scuff slippers. I wonder if the problem is moisture retention in boots?
I've never been in a DSW but think I will go out of my way to find one, although I'm sure that the stores in my neck of the woods are not so impressive as in NY! New shoes are good.
-
I've never been a fan of UGG boots. My sister LOVES them. HOWEVER, I saw a pair in the victorias secret catalogue for $150, and I REALLY want them, but won't spend the money.
http://www.southmoonunder.com/bvc/ugg-australia-classic-cardy-crochet-boot-ivory-134957ivor.html
I wanted to post a picture, so I just found them for $140.
They look cute both all the way high, and buttoned over. They come in a few colors, but of course I want the cream, which I know will get filthy.
Union bay makes a similiar knit boot for $50, however, I don't like it as much. The buttons are dark brown, and the boot just doesn't look as nice,
I'm always saying that I have no casual shoe. It's either heels, boots or sneakers. I hate wearing jeans with a sneaker, it doesn't make sense at all, and according to Stacy and Clinton, it's a total fashion DON'T.
I think the UGG boots look like a good alternative, and I probably can wear the knit ones through spring? thoughts?
-
Um, I think the UGG knit boots are cute but too warm looking for spring. They look "bundle-uppy." JMO
Of course, the knock-offs may be cheaper but not often as nice. Or, maybe we just get used to the real thing and then everything else looks "off."
Beth, I suppose you don't like those rubber-soled sporty shoes that are so popular now. Something like the J-41 Leo's or Aquarius?
Okay, jeans and sneakers are THE classic combination. I do think that means traditional sneakers, though, not walking or running shoes. Check out the Simple sneakers. http://www.simpleshoes.com/ I almost lust over some of the prints. The women's Satire, The Ryde in the charcoal and black combo with the tree-hugger print are sooooo you. LOL Well, it is kind of tongue in cheek. I think it's kinda funny.
I am in a fashion quandry today, too. I've decided on buying a netbook for the house so I can check email and surf after hours. (My other computers are in my office so that's why I'm never online at night.) I've looked at the netbooks in a few stores and have pretty much decided on the Acer. I was going to get the 8.9" for $299 but now I see that amazon has the 10.1" with 6 hours of battery instead of 2.25 for only $349! I've gotta have it.
Okay, here is the issue. It is currently in stock in the blue. They have ruby red listed but it's not in stock yet. I have no way of knowing WHEN it will be in stock. I prefer red, although the blue would be okay. It looks like a deep royal. Oh boy. I want it NOW. I can almost taste it. Should I take a chance and wait for the red? I'm ready to buy. Ayeeeeee!
-
You've always told me you wanted red... the 6 hour battery is a HUGE plus! I would wait for the red. Have you looked in other stores?
-
I think those sneakers are adorable, but it's not my style-- it wouldn't work with anything I wear. Really, it goes back to the whole issue of me not wearing flats. I feel so short, and b/c I wear heels almost all the time, my jeans are way too long for flats. I figured with the UGG boots I could at least tuck the jeans into them.
I looked back at the UGG site, and it says the knit ones are for spring 09!!! I thought what you though Tina- that they looked like cold weather boots.
I can't justify spending the money-- but I may drop some hints to my mom.
