Bathing Suit Shopping was "a bust"
Comments

I took my bathing suit in to the mastectomy shop. Someone there sewed in a "pocket" for $10. So....I had my regular bathing suit that I already liked (that fit my hips! ((ha)). Certainly was a savings because mastectomy bathing suits were rather costly!

Check this EBAY seller.

The person who started this thread was right beside Princess Margaret which also has a Mastectomy, Cancer Care store. The mall at the corner has a store, got their bus. card and they make to-order swimsuits. The things you see when you are looking....

Okay gals, was just at landsend.com and cannot find the mastectomy suits? Help! I did do the search for "mastectomy" and it returned results but did not identify whether they had pockets or what.

Annie,
I tried to create a link for you but it didn't work, so go to the Lands' End website. Click on Women's. When you get to the Women's page, click on Swimsuits--it's the first item under "Categories." When you get to the Swimsuits page look at the box on the left that says "Swimsuits." Mastectomy Suits are toward the bottom of the list. Click on that and you should be there!
Hope this helps.

Do they just assume that everyone having a mastectomy is OLD or wants to look old? So many of those having this surgery are young. Some are having prophylactic surgeries due to having a breast cancer gene or actually discovering abnormalities on mammos done because of high breast cancer risk.
When will the manufacturers wake up and make us something stylish?

I'm giving a shout-out for Melmira in Toronto...beautiful shop, private change rooms, personal assistant comes in and asks what you might like....Brings endless gorgeous suits out, advises which will work and won't work...then they sew beautiful flesh-coloured pockets into the suits, if you choose not to go with a mastectomy suit. I chose two very hot bikinis with halter-style tops...well, they were hot for me! I wouldn't be surprised if they would be able to do the sewing of the pockets by mail: use an existing favourite suit, tell them which side needs the pockets, what's the name and model and size of your prosthetic...For our sisters in the states, any good prosthetic provider that sews pockets should be able to do the same...For swimming laps, I just go formless and flat. Who looks at the swimming pool anyway? I'm pretty sure: no one!
Yay swimming!

for those really struggling with swim suits ... i do use my regular one with the poofy sewn right in...
I believe there is a site : womanspersonalhealth.com ? the lady has wonderful things and I believe swimsuits
good luck

I've found my swimsuits have to come up pretty high on my chest to cover enough. I've been having great luck with Lands' End mastectomy suits. Most of them are attractive and youthful looking. I wait for the sales and the free shipping offers and just got another great tankini for about $40.

Hello all, I have read this thread many times, but obviously never posted, but this past weekend I actually/finally after store upon store I found a suit that I can wear without my prosthesis and look good (so everyone says anyway). I live in Fla, I am used to having multiple suits and living in them daily as I am on the beach. I am unable to wear my prosthesis for any length of time because of some pulmonary issues. And besides that it is hot and heavy in this humidity.
The suit is made of spandex, and fits so nice at the top (snug) nothing moves from place when bending forward, and it is just lightly padded so it gives a small boob look. I never thought I would be able to buy a V because of some continued "denting" on my left side from rads. But this one is cut high enough to hide it all. Anyway the brand name is Mystic Bay - but unfortunetly I think it is a store brand, heres a link to some of my pic's in it - might help you all with ideas.
Good shopping to all.

I had an excellent experience at the Woman's Personal Health site. The sizing advice is very clear and accurate, and they will accept returns on swimsuits (those that are not on final sale which is more than fair). Here's the link < http://www.womanspersonalhealth.com/categories/36/1/Swimwear-.htm >. I measured myself carefully (that was depressing...), took a deep breath, and ordered two Amoena suits on final sale last summer -- and they fit perfectly. You should be able to find something well under the $200 range that your local store was talking about. Good luck!!

I,too have complained since the first summer without my left breast. My major complaint was no 20 something suits.I was 23 when diagnosed.I am now 32 1/2.I have two suits, but ain't too fond of neither.I never was one to wear a bikini too much.I hope to some day get reconstruction if possible to eliminate such trouble with clothing.cause I can no longer wear anything the least bit low cut, cause I also have denting on the left side, and my other side is a full B/C.So the forms are a bit heavy.I can only imagine what a fuller busted woman must go through.
-
I had a rough time finding a suit to fit me that was also mastectomy so I just made my own. I removed the padding out of a bikini and stuck my prosthesis in. You be the judge. How does it look? I was worried that it might gap at the chest but I tied on the halter pretty tight. I used Airway size 2 style 1054. Bikini from Target (Converse line).

She-ra, I think you look awesome. Obviously so does your guy
Very resourceful of you!
-
SHe Ra.. wow you look great.. I not as young or in shape but did find a few regular suits that looked good with some minor work...

You are beautiful!!!! What an inspiration! I was dreading bathing suit shopping, but you have changed my attitude! Tammy

OKAY Here is a question.
I chose not to have reconstruction and not to wear prostheses also (i had BMs this past winter). I have really been enjoying going braless after size 34 DD and all the cutting into my shoulders and back problems. My Mom has offered to buy me a swimsuit and we went shopping and it was a yucky, yucky day.
What I really want is an athletic or swimmer tank suit. Without any padding at all. And with modest leg openings. I'm a size 16, so I'm still working on getting my waist and tummy and thighs to be like my svelt upper body. I'm a farmer/permaculture type gal and live in a rural area and have mostly just gone skinny-dipping, which I will continue to do. I usually have gotten old swim suits from friends or a used suit in the thrift store. So I don't know names of stores or catalogs where they sell athletic or swimmer tank type suits. I really don't even know if they will work??
Any suggestions?

look for speedos... (altho all the speedos from women have shelf bras with a little supporting brat thing in there,.. I intend to cut the padding out.. i think there will still be an elastic band underneath.
there is swimming poofy thread where someone had made forms out of the makeup net stuff from Walmart.
