rads
I need to make a decision quickly.
I had 1 cm tumor and 1mm micro met in one sentinal node. I had mastectomy, 21 nodes removed and all clear. I have had Chemo (DD EC and weekly taxol/carboplantin).
My onc does not recommend me for rads. I don't know a place to get second opinion as I do not live in the US. What do you think? Pls advise.

Hi Alex,
While I cannot advise as to what you should do, I can tell you what my rads onc told me. She recommended that I have radiation, even though I had a mastectomy. Why? Because I had a 5cm tumor, another tumor in the same breast and 3 positive lymph nodes (one of them was 1cm and ready to spread to another - sorry, I cannot remember the technical term for this). She recommended due to my age (39), the size of my tumor and number of nodes to have rads. If I had had less than 3 positive nodes, even with the 5cm tumor, she would not have recommended radiation.
So for me, rads was recommended because: 5cm tumor + 3 or more nodes positive + age. If my onc hadn't so strongly recommended rads, I would not have had this treatment.
Good luck You.

Oh gee, this is exactly what makes this disease so awful! These decisions. So hard.
I had a 7mm cancer, a lumpectomy and rads, no chemo. I am in my 11th year after diagnosis.
I think no rads is fine with that small a tumor.
Shoot, I wish we had a crystal ball that worked.
Gentle hugs, Shirlann

Did they radiate your mast. site and auxililary nodes area also? I am just afraid after mast. there is thin skin left over and if radiate the mast. site, would the radiation cause any potential cancer to the skin and lung?
-
Alex,
Hi. Yes, they radiated my chest wall, axilla and back. And yes, there is a slight risk of developing lung and/or skin cancer with rads. With the lung cancer, this is especially true if one is a smoker and has radiation, as the radiation does hit a bit of the upper lobe of the lung, although they try mighty hard to avoid this. My rads onc told me my risk for recurrence of bc was much higher and immediate if I declined the rads than my risk of lung cancer (even with me having been a social smoker). I am going to go out on a limb here and say that if I were you, I wouldn't do the rads. With your small tumor, having had a mast and haivng no nodal involvement, I think no rads would be my choice.
Good luck - Raye

I'll give you my honest opinion. I was no where near your shoes.... I had no choice with my treatment. I am glad about this, instead of thinking should I or not. Onc's opinions and second opinions can make anyone go batty. I though about IF i hadn't been misdiagnosed and caught my tumor when it was a hell of a lot smaller. I myself did not have lymph node involvment but my tumor was 8cm....it grew super fast but did not want to spread. I am NOT triple neg, but triple positive.
I think now if I had been diagnosed sooner, triple neg or not, I would want to hit it big NOW. I wouldn't want to go back and say should of...could of..thing. That way I have no regrets and I know I have done everything possible to get rid of it. Remember being triple neg, you have surgery / chemo/ rads and your done.
I also want to say, I think it is so important to trust your docs but unfortunatly for me I have learned that they are human too and do make mistakes with their recommendations and diagnosis. This is very hard and I wish you all the best in your decision.

lexislove your so right...
I don't believe in rads (last day after rads I had skins mets come through) but it's one of those things in life you never want to go back and say...I wished I did it....Just do it now!
