drain tubes, how long
I had a lumpectomy 15 days ago, One drain tube was put in, not to be removed until there was less than 50 cc in a 24 hour period. I had an appt tomorrow to have it removed, but it is 10:00 pm, the 24 hour period will be tomorrow morning at 8:00 am, and it is already at 50 cc, so it will not be taken out tomorrow,I still have in the staples from surgery, Can someone please tell me how it was for them?? The stiches hurt, and I am beginning to think it will never be taken out..
Thank you,
Allie

Allie-
As uncomfortable as the drain is, you really don't want it taken out if you are still accumulating that much fluid. After all, if the drain is out the fluid will accumulate inside you and that is not fun either. Try and be patient until the drainage slows down.

Thank you so much for the response, That is exactly what I needed to hear. Bless you.

My surgeon said no longer than a week due to the risk for infection. I was already draining less than 30 cc daily at that point anyway.

Hi Allie!
My drains were in for 3 weeks, but I had a bi-lat so was draining a lot! baywatcher is absolutely right, its much better to have it drain out than stay in!! Hang in there!!Lorraine ox

I am originally from Columbus. I had my surgeries at Grant. Where in Columbus are you?

I live in Sharon Woods, near Westerville, Lived in Westerville for years, After my sons were out of school, I moved to Columbus to avoid W-ville taxes. Had my surgery at Dublin Methodist, in Dublin, and will be using both Dublin and Riverside. I sure wish I were living in Key West, my cousin, who is like my sister lives in Naples, so whenever I can leave work, I go there. Have to love that ocean and sunshine!! Have you lived there long? When were you dx?

I was supposed to get my drains out last tuesday but only 2 of the 3 had tapered off enough- one was like 15, one was about 40, the one that was 60 stayed in. Hopefully it will come out next monday almost 3 weeks post surgery. It seems to have dropped off today so that looks good. I was told not to shower, but I couldn't stand it and got this stuff called shower shield- a plastic sheet with adhesive on each side to cover the drain. I have heard of people using saran wrap and waterproof tape. Other people are allowed to shower with the drains , depends on your doc I guess.
