Herceptin and Fever ?

Hello !  I asked this on another forum and so far have not gotten an answer, so I thought I would try here.   In the evening after my first herceptin infusion on January 14,  I got severe chills and a fever that lasted about a day and a half.    Doc says that it is likely I am a little "hyper sensitive" to this drug.   Wondering if anyone else has this side effect, and if so, what you and/or your doc did about it prior to the next infusion ?

Many thanks.

Jill

Hi Jill323, I experienced the same thing the first couple of infusions.  I was told to drink plenty of liquids before hand and to just rest and drink liquids.  The only other se's I continued to have were achey muscles, headaches and fatigue.  Twice I had unexpected swelling of legs and face and was given steroids before infusion and had to take prednisone for 5 days following swelling twice.

Hope things go well for you during your next treatment.

    Stay well....

my onc's office premedicates with tylenol.  I have not had those se's but do feel fluish after infusion.  maybe tylenol will help.

I have chills and runny nose. I didn't realize it was the Herceptin until I started reading all the posts from the ladies on herceptin. I remember the first time I had Herceptin with my chemo that they gave me 2 tylenol, because it could cause a fever. Wishing you the best. Dee

    Hello Jill,

I just posted a reply regarding a Herceptin question elswhere on another forum.  Sometimes the rate of infusion will cause this.  My personal experience, (high fever, drop in blood pressure, and 5 days in the hospital) the rate at which the Herceptin was given caused one of the symptoms that you mentioned.  Find out what the amount of time was that they administered the infusion and then ask the medical staff to slow the infusion rate.  Read the pharmaceutical information about Herceptin in the paragraph "Adverse Reactions" and "Infusion Rates".  I had the oncology nurses drag the infusion from 1/2 hour to 1 hour and never had a problem after that.
