Help please.........I am 37 and have had a heavy period for the past few years........it went away for about 7 months after doing AC then T....I am currently doing Herceptin......and taking Tamox.......well it came back yesterday and it seems all 7 missing months worth of blood are making their appearance......sorry to be gross........but for the last 24 hrs......I have been soaking through a super tampon and a pad in under an hour.........had to wake up 5 times through the night and still managed to go through 3 pairs of jammies........I called Onc to see if this was OK........and he said it's quite common for the first period and if it didn't stop by Thursday to call back..........I don't know where all this blood is coming from......but would love to hear from others.......I can't imagine I will be still functioning by Thursday......but we'll see.

Thanks

Jax

    Hey Jax,

Mine came back too, after about 5 months of nothing and it was definitely MUCH heavier than a normal one, but not as bad as yours.  It lasted longer too...around 5 - 6 days instead of my usual 4.  Then I had another one only 2 weeks later but it was more like usual.  I mentioned this to my onc yesterday when I was there and she is going to start me on Lupron injections soon...fun.

I know this probably wasn't much help, but just wanted to tell you I'm sorry you are having to deal w/ this (as if everything else isn't enough, right??) and hope it lets up for you soon!

you should make an appt with your GYN, but I can honestly tell you my periods post chemo, feel like I'm in high school all over again. Even though they are not terribly heavy, the cramping, and PMS reminds me of why I went on Birth control when I was 17...

Of course that's a whole different rant... took the pill for 9 years, and then got cancer- not to say it's totally related but I'll will always think it played a role in it all.

I have had very heavy periods.  For different reasons though.

It sucks!   I was running to the bathroom every 30 minutes.

I have used Instead menstrual Cups.  They help alot more then a Tampon.(at least for me)

I used to get them at Target.  now they dont seem to carry them.  but Walgreens & Walmart should.

    Worth giving them a try.

    Hi,

I was told my period would not come back as I'd just turned 40 before starting FEC-T 100 (6 rounds, every three weeks cycle). Well... by the 6th round of chemo I had no more periods and had apparently the hormone levels of a 100 yr old woman, oh my joint and bone pain!

Then about 9/10 months after that, periods came back.Big time. Like BethNY, more pmt, more aches, and like you especially on 1st one mega loads of blood. It's not quite so much now, but the periods are starting to be erratic. I just finished my last period 2 weeks ago, and after feeling mega pmt for 3 days, I find that I am back "on" again. whew.

Hopefully things should settle for you in the next few periods. You might want to keep a record, I sure get muddled up now with my new unpredictable pattern (if there is a pattern). I will sure miss the hormones if I go very low again.

    Hope it gets better.

My first period after chemo was much heavier than normal. However, all periods since then have been pretty light. You're right--I think the first one is a bit like the body is making up for lost time.

Beth is right, though--check with your OB/GYN, b/c what you're describing seems really heavy (although I'll bet the OB will say it's within the realms of normal). Hopefully it's starting to slow up by now--keep us posted.

During chemo, my period stopped about half way through treatment.  My last period before it stopped was HORRIBLE.  It was very heavy, lasted 10 days.  My onc suggested trying Children's ibuprofen to help lighten it (why? i don't know.. i was just worried about blood loss)  anyways, it did stop eventually and i did take the ibuprofen, though i don't know if that was all coincidence.  Then she told me to call the gyn if it didn't get better.  Well, when my period came back after chemo, it has actually been lighter than previous (it had always been heavy) and very much more regular (maybe too regular when it's every 22 days!)

Anyways, i think i would call the gyn if tom. is no better....hope it gets better REALLY SOON!
