Choosing an oncologist
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to go about finding an Oncologist that is supportive to complementary medicine with chemo/radiation. My Mom just finished the 2nd surgery today(lymph nodes) and now we are beginning to research Oncologists. She really wants someone who is open to complementary approaches...nutritionist, natural supplements. I have gone to the websites of the main groups in Knoxville, TN, but can't find any who seem to incorporate an all around approach. Can anyone tell me if there is anywhere I can search online or suggest ways to find out this information? Thank you so much. Sherry

I wish I could tell you a easy way...there are none that I could find. Can you get her to Cancer Center's of America? I've heard good things about this place. What I did with my oncologist was tell him I was going to do this. He said he did not agree with this but if a wanted to fine. We pretty much started off as he would not ask what I was doing and I didn't tell him. This went on until he finely had to ask me what I was doing to take care of myself so well during so much treatment. This did leave me to do my own research. One thing he did ask is don't mega dose anything.
If you fined a homeopathic they that works with cancer patients they will know what you can and can not do in treatment. Homeopathic has a four year degree in natural medicine. Look for this near hospital's and cancer clinic's. (start yellow pages) The only other thing I can tell you is start asking very body in your area about this. Some time you can find out about these doctor through a very high end health food/supplement store. They deal with cancer patients and talk to them regularly.
Best of luck to you and your mom. I wish we all could have access to complementary treatment of conv/alter. Please do not give up you may have to start one place and than move we you find a doctor you want.

Thank you so much for your response. We are going to start making phone calls tomorrow. I have talked with the cancer treatment centers of america, but the closest ones to her are oklahoma and illinois. She lives near Knoxville TN and does not have the financial resources to travel there.

Sherrysmom: I went through a bundle of oncologists and finally decided I needed to do my own research, make my own decisions, and take a traditional Western medicine approach while I was in the hospital, but supplement it with alternative at home. So I did acupuncture to help with the chemo effects; had a healthy green juice every day (still do, three years later) heavy on cruciferous vegetables--cabbage, kale--with carrots and apples to make it taste better; limited my alcohol; increased folic acid intake with tablets; walked at least a mile every day and two miles when I could; and ate a low-fat diet. All of these have been found to be important for triple negative. Treatment was a bit easier for me with this approach, and three years later I am still fine, thank God. I have a fabulous book, The Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Breast Cancer, by Sat Dharam Kaur, ND. You can find her Healthy Breast Program at http://www.healthybreastprogram.on.ca/healthy_breast_program_home_page.htm.
I am a medical writer and I blog about hormone-negative breast cancer at hormonenegative.blogspot.,com. I am writing a book on the subject, so I am eager to find what types of information people need.
